Photo: Bridges, Lewis, and Paleschic ..................................................................155 iv Abstract The People’s Poets of Texas: Literature Born Within the Singer/Songwriter Tradition of the Last Forty Years is a creative nonfiction exploration of the poetry found within the songs of multiple generations of modern Texas singer/songwriters and a case for the consideration of their work as a genuine regional literature. Studying the roots of Texas music, the musicality of Texan manners of speech and storytelling, and re-examining the Austin, Texas music scene of the 1970s that brought a national focus to the organic, reciprocal manner in which Texas music is traditionally experienced, radically altered the ways in which the songs were written, recorded, and marketed. An examination of this phenomenon allows us to understand that, first, a proliferation of Texas singer/songwriters of unprecedented quality has emerged in recent decades and that, second, a legitimate people's literature is emerging from their song-craft. When it comes to their subdivision and definition of specific literature and art type, the boundaries become unclear and many questions arise. One of the most difficult questions to answer is what poetry is and which criteria must be met in order for some work to be classified as poetry. It is known that authors such as Shakespeare, Byron, Cummings or Angelou are poets and their work is interpreted as poetry. However, can the circle of poetry and art be expanded to similar forms such as contemporary music? That is the topic of this thesis – analysis, explanation and specific examples of modern song lyrics which can be viewed as poetry and something more valuable in the art context than it actually is due to the commercialization of music. With songs performed by Tupac, Garbage, Leonard Cohen, Bill Withers and various artists who belong to different music genres and eras, poetry is broadened and upgraded to the 21st century level.     BIOGRAPHY: BILLY JOE SHAVER OUTLAW ERA’S TREND-SETTING SONGWRITER Billy Joe Shaver has recorded more than twenty albums, but his gritty songwriting has always outshined his career as a singer. That was especially true in 1973 when Waylon Jennings chose nine of Shaver’s songs for Honky Tonk Heroes, among the first and the best of the Outlaw albums. Willie Nelson has declared Shaver “definitely the best writer in Texas . Everything he writes is just poetry.” Born on August 16, 1939, in Corsicana, Texas, Billy Joe Shaver was raised by his grandmother after his father left the family and his mother took a job in Waco, sixty miles away. Shaver grew up listening to the Grand Ole Opry, as well as the rhythm and blues of Corsicana’s African American community, and he began writing songs by age eight.
