Stressed or Disjunctive Pronouns – Les pronoms toniques

Stressed pronouns are a form of personal pronouns. They’re called ‘stressed’, ‘accented’, ‘emphatic’ or ‘disjunctive’, depending on what their function in the sentence is. In French, you’ll find them called ‘pronoms toniques’, ‘pronoms disjoints’, or ‘pronoms accentués’. These pronouns are used to replace a person, not a thing. They’re often used after a preposition – pour, chez… - or a conjunction – et, que… They may move around in the sentence and are not necessarily right next to the verb. They are generally at the beginning (subject) or the end (object) of a sentence, and they agree with what they replace.

• La pomme est pour moi. • On se sent chez soi. • C’est pour lui. • Eux, ils sont là.

Note: SOI is used with ON, CHACUN/E, PERSONNE, NUL/LE as a subject

Uses Use a stressed or disjunctive pronoun

1. after a preposition, a conjunction: c’est à moi, je le mets chez toi, je l’achète pour lui, et eux… 2. to emphasize: Moi, je t’aime. Qui j’aime ? Toi. 3. to contrast: Moi, je t’aime. Et toi ? 4. when there are two pronouns: Nous et vous, on s’aime. 5. cleft sentence: C’est moi qui vais à Paris. (= je vais à Paris) 6. with -même/s: Elle le fait elle-même. C’est pour eux-mêmes. 7. after plus/moins … que, ne… que...: Il va plus vite qu’eux. Je n’aime que vous.
