He was graduated from Maktab Perguruan Sultan Abdul Halim Sungai Petani Kedah (Diploma in Teaching English as a Second Language and Music) and he is the eldest son in his family. A primary school teacher who is teaching in the rural area of Terengganu (Hulu Terengganu) state of Malaysia is a husband and a father of three sons. The first school he teaches in that area was Sekolah Kebangsaan Bukit Tadok for three years (2000 – 2003). From 40% school achievement on English Language subject increase to 90% pupils manage to catch up with English Language. Within the years he manages to change the pupils’ perception on studying the language. His Second school is Sekolah Kebangsaan Kuala Ping located in the ame area. The school is situated at the tourism area of Tasik Kenyir the largest manmade lake in South East Asia. Now he is doing his bachelor in TESL in Open University Malaysia Terengganu. 1.2. Engineering students are expected to know their arithmetic, music students have to practice their scales. No one can write good letters, memorandums or reports or master word processing, let alone literary composition, without having first learned the basic grammar. “Today according to the columnist Simon Jenkins, now editor of The Times, ‘not to understand the structure of a sentence is an overwhelming obstacle in the way of most gainful employment…’ Many people event students in every school find grammar is bore, but understanding grammar will in some ways free you from its grip, making you the master of words rather than keeping you as their slave. English teacher in every school in this country are trademark as ‘A Walking Dictionary’. I am very proud of listening to the phrase but how far am I to be like the trademark. Introduction Noam Chomsky is the linguistic anthropologist that founded the idea of communicating with the understanding of grammatically correct expressions. Chomsky took more of a text- book approach to analyzing language than a real-world use of the language. According to Damerau (1971), to understand Chomsky approach to linguistic competence, two things must be made clear: (1) the subject matter of linguistics, and (2) the properties that are necessary in a model for it to be regarded as an adequate model for language (p. 22). In other words, Chomsky had an ideal approach to language which consisted of an undiversified speaker-hearer environment. In real-world situations, it is difficult for a speaker-hearer to exercise their linguistic competence. According to Ottenheimer (2006), Chomsky actually thought of real situations as distractions (p. 95). Chomsky feels that people cannot successfully practice being linguistically competent due to “distractions― such as social norms. The interference from social norms in communication forces the speaker to develop communication competence. Although someone who is speaking linguistically competent may use perfect grammar, a communicatively competent speaker would take into consideration the appropriateness of the situation (Paulston, 1992, p. 38). Analyzing how the people in a culture use linguistic competence to communicate can determine the rules of a language. Linguistic competence is defined as a speaker-hearer ability to speak and understand language in a grammatically-correct manner (Ottenheimer, 2006, p. 95). It is one of the two elements in Chomsky's performance/competence distinction. Linguistic competence is an area of study in the field of intercultural communication founded by the linguistic anthropologist Noam Chomsky. Linguistic competence is the use of grammatical rules of a language, whereas communicative competence is the use of social language rules. Dell Hymes expanded on Noam Chomsky view of linguistic competence by considering the social factors of the culture language. Linguistic performance is one of the two elements in Chomsky's performance/competence distinction. It relates to Language production (parole), with an emphasis upon how this is different from Competence, or the mental knowledge of language itself. In linguistics, language production is the production of spoken or written language. It describes all of the stages between having a concept, and translating that concept into linguistic form. 1.4 Malay and their language Malaysia is a country that consists of thirteen states and three federal territories in Southeast Asia with a total landmass of 329,847 square kilometres (127,355 sq mi). The capital city is Kuala Lumpur, while Putrajaya is the seat of the federal government. The population stands at over 25 million. The country is separated into two regions—Peninsular Malaysia and Malaysian Borneo—by the South China Sea. Malaysia borders Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei and the Philippines. The country is located near the equator and experiences a tropical climate. Malaysia's head of state is the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (conventionally referred to as 'the King' or 'the Agong') and the government is headed by a Prime Minister. The government is closely modeled after the Westminster parliamentary system. The Malays form the majority of the population. Some Malays are of Arab descent and there are sizable Chinese and Indian communities. Islam is the largest as well as the official religion of the federation. The Malay language is the official language. The Malay language was originally written in Pallava from India, the earliest known inscriptions in Malay were found in southern Sumatra and on the island of Bangka and date from 683–6 AD. Malaysia is a founding member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and participates in many international organisations such as the United Nations. As a former British colony, it is also a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. It is also a member of the Developing 8 Countries. The term "Malay" can refer to the ethnic group who live in the Malay Peninsula (which include the southernmost part of Thailand called Patani and Satun) and east Sumatra as well as the cultural sphere that encompass a large part of the archipelago. The Encyclopedia of Malaysia, volume: Early History has pointed out a total of 3 theories of the origin of Malay: 1. The Yunnan theory, Mekong river migration (published 1889) 2. The New Guinea theory (published 1965) 3. The Taiwan theory (published 1997) The ancestor of Malays are believed to be seafarers who are well knowledged in Oceanography, they move around from island to island in great distances between New Zealand and Madagascar, and they served as navigation guide, crew and labour to Indian, Persian and Chinese traders for nearly 2000 years, and over the years they settled at various places and adopted various cultures and religions. Notable Malay seafarers of today are Moken and Orang laut. Some historians suggested they were descendants of Austronesian-speakers who migrated from the Philippines and originally from Taiwan. He is probably the most important voice who promoted the idea of a ‘Malay’ race or nation, not limited to the Malay ethnic group, but embracing the peoples of a large but unspecified part of the South East Asian archipelago. Raffles formed a vision of Malays as a language-based 'nation', in line with the views of the English Romantic movement at the time, and in 1809 sent a literary essay on the topic to the Asiatic Society. After he mounted an expedition to the former Minangkabau seat of royalty in Pagaruyung, he declared that it was the ‘the source of that power, the origin of that nation, so extensively scattered over the Eastern Archipelago’.

Rajantherarr' Abstract Late 19th and ear1y 20th centuries marks the mass migration of people from India to Malaya to work in estates while minority of them came as merchants and to work incivil service. The majority group started their religious practice by worshiping the demigods. On the other hand, the minority group settled in urban areas and they initiated the proper religious practice by building temples for the main deities such as Lord Siva, Lord Muruga as well as Lord Vishnu. After the independence of Malaya, many of those residing in the estates began to shift to urban areas for improvements in their life. These people began to have realisation on the actual way of religious practice and were attracted to the prayers to the main deities such as Lord Shiva and Lord Muruga. Currently, besides the prayers to the main deities, Malaysian Indians have high level or spiritual awareness such as meditation and Siddha philosophy. Though there is a significant evidence or religious awareness among Malaysian Indians, Tamil movies produced in Malaysia still centres in the olden religious practice and the worship to demigods. As such, this research intends to explore the reason for the production of such themes in local Tamil movies. Besides, the researcher also wants to find out the reality in comparison to the movie projections. This research also would shed light the movie of the local Tamil movie producer in exposing the olden religious practice rather than the reality.     Negotiating identities in the Diasporic Space: Transnational Tamil Cinema and Malaysian Indians Gopalan Ravindran Abstract One of the significant transformations brought about by globalization is the transnationalization of diasporic cinemas. A case in point is the growth of diasporic cinemas catering to the varied diasporas of Indian origin. One of the most important diasporas cinema is Tamil cinema. Negotiations of identities in the Tamil diasporic space are mediated by a variety of sources ranging from Tamil films, Tamil internet, Tamil satellite television/radio and Tamil newspapers/magazines, beside interpersonal sources. Even though, studies have not been done on the relative influence of the above sources, it is apparent that in countries like Malaysia and Singapore, Tamils films are having a perceptible influence among different sections of the Indian population. The present day generation prefer training in job-oriented, application and practice oriented education, so they are forced to shift from their mother- tongue to the national language or English for specific purposes.

Comprising thirteen states (eleven located on the mainland, two situated in island Southeast Asia), diversity is evident between the many officially categorised ethnic groups, as well as within them (blurring official ethnic categories). Bi- or multilingualism is the norm throughout Malaysia, albeit more prevalent among minorities and in certain areas, especially those that are urban and/or are locations of ethnic diversity. Code- switching and translanguaging are common enough not to be remarkable outside of formal public discourse and mono-ethnolinguistic situations. This study was undertaken in East Malaysia, Sarawak, and takes an ethnographic approach. In order to try and make sense of the ways in which East Malaysian speakers express themselves, participant observation was undertaken in a family and a friendship domain, respectively. Speech events were informal and naturally occurring, during which family members and, separately, a group of friends interact in a variety of languages, illustrating the rich multilingual repertoires that participants can draw on.

    SOCIAL MEANING, INDEXICALITY AND ENREGISTERMENT OF MANGLISH IN YOUTH WHATSAPP CHATS Thesis submitted in accordance with the requirements of the University of Liverpool for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy NUR HUSNA SERIP MOHAMAD Department of English School of the Arts September 2019 1 ABSTRACT Manglish, a variety of Malaysian English, has often been stereotyped in Malaysian media (i.e., local newspapers) as ‘improper English’ (Why Speak Manglish, 2007; Manglish-English Dilemma, 2007) or labelled by scholars as a type of ‘poor’, ‘broken’ English (Nair-Venugopal, 2013: 455). In fact, speakers of Manglish have been associated with ‘rural background’, ‘low-status’ in society, as well as ‘uneducated’ (Mahir, and Jarjis, 2007: 7). In recent years, there have been increasing debates on the status and use of Manglish, where it is a preferred variety of linguistic expression and is widely employed within certain contexts. The rise of Manglish has been hardly ignored in various social media platforms. This raises questions on how and why Manglish is employed or chosen as a language to communicate within online settings such as Instant Messaging. Thus, the (social) meanings that underlie Manglish communicative practices deserve exploration. This thesis seeks to contribute to the current discussion in linguistic studies on Manglish among three ethnic groups in Malaysia which are Malay, Chinese and Indian, by exploring how in-groupness and ethnic identity is reflected in the way speaker use Manglish features in WhatsApp conversation. These verse and prose forms collected here were all written in English within the last 80 years. In fact, in the contemporary Malaysian literary scene, the number of works by Malaysian Indian writers writing in English, has increased compared to the previous volumes which were primarily dominated by writers such as Cecil Rajendra, K.S. Maniam and M. Shanmughalingam. It is interesting to note that the interest of writing poetry and prose among the younger Malaysian Indian writers is on the rise with publications from younger poets and writers such as Paul GnanaSelvam and Cheryl Ann Fernando. In Malaysia, poetry and prose written by Malaysian Indian writers in English is diversifying with many promising new talents. Departing from the Malaysian Indian diaspora, the emerging themes of these lesser-known writers are more liberal. As such, the main aim of this article is to map out the cartography of Malaysian Indian works in these three genres; poem, short story and novel, and identify the main thematic concerns in the writings.

They include 'Xiao Ren Wu De Xin Sheng' (Voices From The Heart), 'Munnaeru Vaalibaa' (Forward O Youth) and yes, 'Rasa Sayang' (Loving Feeling). Memories of belting out that last song welled up while my team and I were planning this year’s Singapore Writers Festival. But do we really know what the song means? Are we paying lip service to multi-lingualism, of getting to know each other? That is why we chose Sayang as the theme for this year’s festival. Found in Malay, Tagalog, Sundanese and various languages of the Malay Archipelago, the word ‘sayang’ means love and tenderness. Significantly, it also refers to regret Yeow Kai Chai and pity, delivered with a wistful sigh. We savour the nuances, its shades of loves Festival Director and losses. The word provides the guiding principle for our programming: What do we love and what sacrifices have we made? We are heartened, for instance, that you have embraced our inter-disciplinary approach last year, and we continue to do so this year, with productions, collaborations and lectures.
