I thought I would surely be misunderstood. I would be accused of being a racist. 2. Sure enough, although many agree with me, some felt sad that I had become a racist, others merely use nasty words against me. 3. When the opposition did very well in the 2008 elections, foreign observers talk about a wind of change in Malaysia; about how racialism had been rejected, how Anwar, their favourite would soon take over the Government. 4. I had differed from these casual observers because I know that it was not rejection of racial politics which helped the opposition. It was simply disgust on the part of members of UMNO, MCA and Gerakan of the Premiership and leadership of Dato Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. Talking on the ground, this was quite obvious. 5. Far from the opposition's "win" being brought about by rejection of racial politics, it has actually enhanced racial politics. We talk more about race and racial interest than we did in the last 50 years. 6. The Malays are feeling the loss of their political base and the Chinese and Indians appear to be glorifying in the new political clout. As a result, subjects which we before regarded as sacrosanct are now brought up and made to be entirely in favour of the Malays. 7. Against this unfamiliar attack against them, the Malays are unable to counter. Their leaders have deserted them. In their frustration they tend to become abusive. 8. I am not defending nor do I like what Ahmad Ismail of Bukit Bendera said. It does not contribute to lessening the tension between the races. But I feel disgust at the inability of the present Malay leadership to manage racialism. It is degrading for the second highest leader in the Government to be apologising for every instance of improper behaviour by UMNO members. 9. The person who should apologise should be the culprit himself. If he refuses then he should face the UMNO disciplinary committee. 10. He may have a corruption case against him but suddenly making charges about his corruption smacks too much of abuse of power. The same thing has happened to the SAPP leadership. 11. It does seem that the Government of the Opposition parties are not unlike the present BN Government. Government agencies are being used for political purpose. I had admired Lim Guan Eng for his sound approach to problems. I feel sad that he has done what he has done. 12. It took a long time for me to live down the label as a Malay ultra. I had gained such strong support from the Chinese community in the 1999 Election when the Malays deserted me that I felt I was no longer regarded as a Malay ultra by the Chinese generally (the Opposition Chinese excepted). I was grateful for the Chinese support and I had many times publicly acknowledged that much of Malaysia's development was due to the dynamic Malaysian Chinese entrepreneurs and businessmen. But of course there are still Chinese who regard me as anti-Chinese. 13. I cannot please everybody. If I am again labelled as anti-Chinese and anti-Indian I really would not rebut. After all, my Cabinet colleagues and the people I helped to advance in their political career also condemn me. 14. Perhaps people should wonder why during the time of the previous four Prime Ministers, who were also Presidents of UMNO, there were no such utterances by UMNO members.     Kontak Bahasa Belanda dan Bahasa Sunda sebagai Pemerkaya Kebudayaan: Serapan Kosakata1 Oleh Dr. Sugeng Riyanto, M.A. Dr. H. Agus Nero Syofyan, M.Hum Nani Darmayanti, Ph.D. ABSTRACT Sundanese people open to outside influences to develop its culture. This is evident from the results of the study reported here. With qualitative research method, this research data is taken from the Sundanese dictionary Danadibrata (2009). There are 1164 Sundanese words that are derived from the Dutch language. That means that 2.91% of the 40,000 words of Sunda. Type the word which is most nouns, followed by adjectives and adverbs, and verbs, prepositions, and interjections. There is a loan word that does not change the forms and some words are changed in terms of both phonological and morphological. Adjustments are made if the Sundanese does not have the form. There are some words which experienced a total change. In terms of meaning there is no change but there is also a change, either narrowed or expanded. Keywords: loanwoards, fonological changing, morfological changing, changing in meaning. ABSTRAK Masyarakat Sunda terbuka terhadap pengaruh dari luar untuk mengembangkan kebudayaannya. Hal itu terbukti dari hasil penelitian yang dilaporkan di sini. Dengan metode penelitian berancangan kualitatif, data penelitian ini diambil dari kamus Danadibrata (2009). Dalam bahasa Sunda terdapat 1164 kata yang berasal dari bahasa Belanda. Itu berarti 2,91% dari 40.000 kata Sunda. Jenis kata yang terbanyak adalah nomina, disusul adjektiva dan adverbia, lalu verba, preposisi, dan interjeksi. Ada kata serapan yang tidak mengalami perubahan bentuk dan ada pula kata yang mengalami perubahan bentuk baik dari segi fonologis maupun morfologis.

    Persebaran Kosakata Belanda di Berbagai Bahasa di Dunia1 (Sugeng Riyanto, Fakultas Ilmu Budaya Universitas Padjadjaran Bandung) 1. Pembuka Bahasa Belanda tidak hanya meminjamkan kosakatanya pada bahasa dari negara-negara yang dulu menjadi koloninya, yakni yang terbesar adalah Indonesia dan yang lebih kecil adalah Afrika Selatan dan Suriname. Belanda juga pernah menduduki Malakka dan Sri Langka. Di Jepang Belanda pernah bercokol di pulau Deshima. Sebagai pelaut dan pedagang ulung orang Belanda pada masa lampau juga singgah di berbagai belahan benua lain dan ternyata bahasa Belanda juga meminjamkan banyak kata di bahasa-bahasa lainnya, misalnya bahasa Rusia, bahasa Cina, bahasa Jepang, bahasa Korea, bahasa Turki, dan bahkan bahasa Arab. Dalam bahasa Indonesia banyak kata diserap dari bahasa Belanda, misalnya: amplop, ban, dongkrak, koalisi, kusen, parlemen, politik, gratis. Kata-kata itu dalam bahasa Belanda adalah enveloppe, band, dommekracht, coalitie, kozijn, parlement, politik, gratis. Bahasa-bahasa lain di Indonesia, selain bahasa Indonesia juga menyerap kosakata bahasa Belanda. Dalam bahasa Jawa dikenal kata pit ‘sepeda’, potlot ‘pensil’, dan kelar ‘selesai’; tiga kata yang berasal dari fiets, potlood, dan klaar. Bahasa Sunda menyerap kelar, bus, onerdil (dalam bahasa Belanda bus, onderdeel). Bahasa Melayu Manado menyerap birman ‘tetangga’ (dalam bahasa Belanda buurman), snup ‘kudapan’ (dalam bahasa Belanda snoep). Bahasa Melayu Jakarta, Melayu Ambon, bahasa Madura, dan bahasa lain juga menyerap banyak kosa kata Belanda. Makalah ini membahas ekspansi bahasa Belanda ke berbagai bahasa-bahasa lain di dunia, yakni persebaran kosakata Belanda ke pelbagai bahasa yang ada di berbagai belahan dunia. Pembahasan diawali dengan sejarah ringkas ekspansi bahasa Belanda dan dilanjutkan dengan jumlah kata yang dipinjamkan pada berbagai bahasa beserta contoh kata-katanya.

Lauder and Allan F. Lauder Abstract The present paper reflects on Indonesia’s status as an archipelagic state and a maritime nation from a historical perspective. It explores the background of a multi-year research project into Indonesia’s maritime past currently being undertaken at the Humanities Faculty of Universitas Indonesia. The multidisciplinary research uses toponymy, epigraphy, philology, and linguistic lines of analysis in examining old inscriptions and manuscripts and also includes site visits to a number of old port cities across the archipelago. We present here some of the core concepts behind the research such as the importance of the ancient port cities in a network of maritime trade and diplomacy, and link them to some contemporary issues such as the Archipelagic Outlook. This is based on a concept of territorial integrity that reflects Indonesia’s national identity and aspirations. It is hoped that the paper can extend the discussion about efforts to make maritime affairs a strategic geopolitical goal along with restoring Indonesia’s identity as a maritime nation. Allan F. Lauder is a guest lecturer in the Post Graduate Linguistics Department program at the Humanities Faculty of the Universitas Indonesia. GILL ABSTRACT The Portuguese identity plays an important role not only towards the Portuguese community but also to Malaysia. If the Portuguese community does not preserve their identity, they may lose their identity throughout time. It will be a loss for Malaysia as well because Malaysia is regarded as a country uniquely rich with its ethnic diversity. This Portuguese community is the only community in the world where they speak a localized Portuguese language, furthermore, their customs and cultures are influenced by the locals through assimilation. Thus, this paper aimed to examine the roles of language, customs and traditions in the maintenance of cultural identity among the Portuguese community in Melaka, Malaysia based on the Portuguese youths’ perspectives. In this article, we analyze the role of the youths in the maintenance of the Portuguese identity - a topic not widely explored. Data were collected from seven (7) open ended interview questions based on Berry’s acculturation model (2005). Eight (8) Portuguese youths were interviewed face-to- face in Melaka Portuguese settlement from May to June 2017. The results showed that the respondents emphasized that the maintenance of Portuguese identity should focus on the cultural perspectives such as the Portuguese traditional customs and festival celebration. However, unlike other ethnic groups in Malaysia, the element of language, i.e. Kristang language was deemed as unimportant in the youths’ opinion on Portuguese identity. Cardoso, pp.35–121 http:/nflrc.hawaii.edu/ldc/sp19 2 http://hdl.handle.net/10125/24906 Kodrah Kristang: The initiative to revitalize the Kristang language in Singapore Kevin Martens Wong National University of Singapore Abstract Kristang is the critically endangered heritage language of the Portuguese-Eurasian community in Singapore and the wider Malayan region, and is spoken by an estimated less than 100 fluent speakers in Singapore. In Singapore, especially, up to 2015, there was almost no known documentation of Kristang, and a declining awareness of its existence, even among the Portuguese-Eurasian community. However, efforts to revitalize Kristang in Singapore under the auspices of the community-based non-profit, multiracial and intergenerational Kodrah Kristang (‘Awaken, Kristang’) initiative since March 2016 appear to have successfully reinvigorated community and public interest in the language; more than 400 individuals, including heritage speakers, children and many people outside the Portuguese-Eurasian community, have joined ongoing free Kodrah Kristang classes, while another 1,400 participated in the inaugural Kristang Language Festival in May 2017, including Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister and the Portuguese Ambassador to Singapore. Unique features of the initiative include the initiative and its associated Portuguese-Eurasian community being situated in the highly urbanized setting of Singapore, a relatively low reliance on financial support, visible, if cautious positive interest from the Singapore state, a multiracial orientation and set of aims that embrace and move beyond the language’s original community of mainly Portuguese-Eurasian speakers, and, by design, a multiracial youth-led core team.

Rajantherarr' Abstract Late 19th and ear1y 20th centuries marks the mass migration of people from India to Malaya to work in estates while minority of them came as merchants and to work incivil service. The majority group started their religious practice by worshiping the demigods. On the other hand, the minority group settled in urban areas and they initiated the proper religious practice by building temples for the main deities such as Lord Siva, Lord Muruga as well as Lord Vishnu. After the independence of Malaya, many of those residing in the estates began to shift to urban areas for improvements in their life. These people began to have realisation on the actual way of religious practice and were attracted to the prayers to the main deities such as Lord Shiva and Lord Muruga. Currently, besides the prayers to the main deities, Malaysian Indians have high level or spiritual awareness such as meditation and Siddha philosophy. Though there is a significant evidence or religious awareness among Malaysian Indians, Tamil movies produced in Malaysia still centres in the olden religious practice and the worship to demigods. As such, this research intends to explore the reason for the production of such themes in local Tamil movies. Besides, the researcher also wants to find out the reality in comparison to the movie projections. This research also would shed light the movie of the local Tamil movie producer in exposing the olden religious practice rather than the reality.
