This thesis examines the intricate and co-constitutive relationship between cinema and politics within the fast changing socio-political landscapes of contemporary Indonesia and Malaysia since the Reformasi era. Employing an “inter-referencing” method and drawing on Jacques Rancière’s and Alain Badiou’s theories on the potentiality of cinema for progressive social change, I examine new film practices, genres, networks, industry structures and social struggles in Indonesia and Malaysia today which are aided by the advancement in new digital technology. Unlike established film industries in the West, the structure of Indonesian and Malaysian cinema is marked by irregularities of economic activities (absence of film distributors, declining film theaters, rampant film piracy) that allow the emergence of a multitude of amateur and independent filmmakers outside the commercial film circuit who have contributed to the creation of a new mode of indie film production. The interconnections and informal networks formed by a “new generation” of Indonesian and Malaysian filmmakers have facilitated an alternative indie filmmaking whose spread is aided by grass root film festivals and events organized by film communities. Facilitated by the Internet, the new indie filmmaking has flourished given new virtual structures of distribution and expression which enabled it to escape from dependency on oligarchic domination and state censorship. viii While conventional genres still exist, the young Indonesian and Malaysian filmmakers infuse unconventional themes (racial

This study uses the Eric Hobsbawm’s theory as the idea of changing form or renewal, In the form of this dance, it is classified as a group choreography with nine dancers who function as a welcoming dance or opening ceremony. The choreography presents a tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation, namely sekapur sirih which is a symbol of respect and appreciation for the guest of honor. Gending Sakti dance is one of the new welcoming dances in Palembang City because there are two different cultural elements that make up the Gending Sakti dance as a new welcoming dance for guests. This Gending Sakti dance is a type of qualitative research that uses an ethnocoreological approach with seven methods of kurath in the by R.M Pramutomo. The analysis uses form analysis. Therefore, it can be interpreted that dance is an expression of the human soul that is expressed through movement and applied to society as a cultural supporter.

Community music gathers people from different backgrounds. Experiences and knowledge shared helps the community through the development in terms of personal growth, self- esteem and self-confidence. These terms are just some of the aspects that community music promotes, apart from music making. Along the process of community music, creativity and expression are important in music making, as this will further develop creative thinking skills among musicians. Qualitative approaches such as observation, interview, and group’s past work were used in this research to gather information and data on how music has been taught to children through community music. Social interaction has certainly shown a big role in developing children thinking and perceptions through the activities implemented.

For instance, in Iranian cinema representations of children are often utilized to minimise the political risk involved in making radical statements, while in Brazilian and Italian cinemas children‟s portrayal has disputed the idealized concept of childhood‟s innocence. In Indonesian cinema, internationally acclaimed director Garin Nugroho is the only filmmaker who has presented children as the main focus of narratives that are oppositional to mainstream and state-sponsored ideologies. Yet, even though his films have been critically identified as key, breakthrough works in Indonesian cinema, no research so far has specifically focused on the representation of children in his films. Consequently, because Garin Nugroho has consistently placed child characters in central roles in his films, the discussion in this thesis focuses on the ideological and discursive implications of his cinematic depiction of children. With the central question regarding the construction of children‟s identities in Garin‟s films, the thesis analyzes in detail four of these films, dedicating an entire chapter to each one of them, and with the last one being specifically addressed in cinematic essay form.

When they do not know their national’s identity, where would they go?” (Ali Sadikin’s statement as interviewed by Express Magazine, June 1, 1973, and several times discussions with Martono Yuwono) “Majapahit", a strong maritime nation in the 14th century The history of Indonesia as a maritime nation dates back to the 14th century when this South East Asian region was subjected under the reign of the great “Majapahit” Empire. The Empire ruled a region which is geographically located between two great continents namely Asia and Australia, and at the same time between two great oceans namely the Pacific and the Indian oceans. This region consisted of mainly the archipelagic group of islands (which is now referred to as Indonesia), and some portion of the coastal region at the south eastern tip of the Asian continent. “Majapahit” was already the largest archipelagic state in the world at that time, in control of the strategic cross roads (sea lanes) between those two great continents and two great oceans.
