Although the members of the subcommittee do not want to make definitive judgments on the applicability of education in Israel to American needs, they are most favorably impressed by the great emphasis which the Israelis place on early childhood programs, vocational/technical education, and residential youth villages. The people of Israel are considered profoundly dedicated to the support of education at every level. The country works toward expansion of opportunities for education, based upon a belief that the educational system is the key to the resolution of major social problems. In the second part of the report, the detailed itinerary of the subcommittee is described with annotated comments about the places and persons visited. In the last part, appendixes describing in great depth characteristics of the Israeli education system (higher education in Israel, education and culture, and the kibbutz) are reprinted. FROM RUSSIA TO OKLAHOMA: A CASE STUDY OF THE IMMIGRANT EXPERIENCE By GARY LYNN WATTERS Bachelor of Arts Oklahoma State University Stillwater, Oklahoma 1972 Submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate College of the Oklahoma State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of MASTER OF ARTS December, 1974 FROM RUSSIA TO OKLAHOMA: A CASE STUDY OF THE IMMIGRANT EXPERIENCE Thesis Approved: Dean of the Graduate College ii PREFACE This study is an attempt to examine in microcosm the impact of immigration in the development of Oklahoma by exploring the role played by the Russian immigrant in the early settlement of the state. A brief overview of the character of Russian immigration is offered first, and this is followed by three case studies of immigrant families from Rus sia who settled in Oklahoma. This has been done for two reasons: to better enable the reader to understand the individual immigrant experience and to point out the importance of immigration upon the state of Oklahoma. The study con~ eludes by examining the significance of the immigrant and pointing out the uniqueness of the individual immigrant experience. This is accom plished by an examination of certain contrasts and comparisons of the three families under consideration. I wish to acknowledge and offer my warmest gratitude to the number of second generation Americans who spent countless hours describing the immigration experiences of a father or brother. Carmel, Haifa, Israel It would probably have been more helpful to the general mental health and emotional well being of the young people in the Yishuv if the child care workers during those years had been more sensitive to the need for family continuity, and less judgmental about the family environment of children in placement. Introduction In 1975, about 54,000 Jewish minors in The period between the end of World War I Israel were living away from their family. Jewish ghettos in Europe Jewish ghettos in Europe were neighborhoods of European cities in which Jews were permitted to live. In addition to being confined to the ghettos, Jews were placed under strict regulations as well as restrictions in many European cities.[1] The character of ghettos varied over the centuries. In some cases, they comprised aJewish quarter, the area of a city traditionally inhabited by Jews. In many instances, ghettos were places of terrible poverty and during periods of population growth, ghettos had narrow streets and small, crowded houses. Residents had their own justice system. Around the ghetto stood walls that, during pogroms, were closed from inside to protect the community, but from the outside during Christmas, Pesach, and Easter Week to prevent the Jews from leaving at those times. In the 19th century, Jewish ghettos were progressively abolished, and their walls taken down. However, in the course of World War II the Third Reich created a totally new Jewish ghetto-system for the purpose of persecution, terror, and exploitation of Jews, mostly in Eastern Europe.
