Letter From The Directors Dear Auditioner,

We are so excited that you have decided to take the opportunity to try out for a position in this wonderful and exciting musical. Whether you are a seasoned performer or a first time participant, we welcome you.

Both Elaine and I are thrilled to be able to bring some amazing musical classics from the 50’s and 60’s to the Coleman stage here in Miami. It’s a fun show with lots of energy, comedy and great music, and of course a bit of “girl drama”.

This musical has a cast of only four (4) women so it will require a high level of commitment, both to the show and to your fellow actresses. Please give thoughtful consideration to your job and personal commitments and responsibilities. Everyone is on stage the whole time, so missing a practice becomes very problematic.

You will be required to spend time outside of practices learning and memorizing songs and dialogue. This is extremely important to make practices efficient and productive and the show a great success.

Now a little about the auditions. Auditions can be stressful and intimidating. Don’t let that hold you back from giving it your all. Don’t worry about messing up, stumbling over words or missing notes. That’s not what I’m looking for. I may ask you to sing or act something over again. This is not a reflection on your performance. I may give instruction and see how well those instructions are implemented. I’m looking for strong vocals and energy. I’m looking for continuity and spontaneity. I’m looking for a group of four women that can blend vocally and become “best friends”. So step up with confidence and give it your best shot.

Now - Take a deep breath and relax!

Charlie & Elaine Rarick

Show History & Synopsis The Marvelous Wonderettes is a cotton-candy colored, non-stop pop musical with four girls who have hopes and dreams as big as their crinoline skirts and voices to match. It is the 1958 Springfield High School senior prom, and four teenage girls who are the school’s “trophy-winning” song leaders are asked to step in as the entertainment. They are replacing the boys’ club, the Crooning Crab Cakes, whose lead singer was caught smoking behind the girls’ locker room and suspended from school.

As they sing and dance to popular classic songs of the 50s and 60’s, tension between two of the girls, Betty Jean and Cindy Lou, increases. They fight about a boy, but eventually make-up as the other girls, Missy and Suzy, also sing about their loves. Act One culminates with the vote for the “Queen of Your Dreams,” the .

Act Two takes place ten years later, at the girls’ ten-year reunion. The girls have again been asked to provide the entertainment. Suzy, Missy, and Betty Jean stayed in Springfield after high school, while Cindy Lou went to Hollywood before coming back to Springfield. Each of the girls tells the story of the man in her life and what has happened since high school. The evening ends as magically as it began.

Vocal & Acting Notes The girls should all sing in a bright, old-fashioned pop-belt style – no modern trills and thrills. Listen to Connie Francis, Doris Day, The Chordettes & The McGuire Sisters for act one styles; listen to Dusty Springfield, Lesley Gore, The Shangri-Las & Betty Everett for act two styles. Old-school comedy skills required.

Do not play the stereotype. Do not play the big hair. Do not play dress-up. These girls need to become real best friends, and their concerns, struggles, hopes and dreams must be real. Sincerity is the key.

WONDERETTES BIOS – for PROM QUEEN POSTERS or PROGRAMS

Missy Miller is proud to serve as the head of this year’s prom decorations committee. Accomplishments: Choreographer and proud member of the Varsity Song Leaders (Go Chipmunks!), leader of the PTA-Student Friendship committee, founder of the ‘Chipmunks For A Better America’ Highway Beautification Committee, T.A. for Mr. Lee’s 4th Period Choir Class, winner of this year’s ‘ Ec Sewing Bee,” and columnist for The Chipmunk Chronicle (‘Missy’s Crafty Corner’). Missy also made most of the refreshments for tonight’s prom. She’s honored and just a bit nervous to be nominated for prom queen along with all of her best friends, the Wonderettes. Apricot is her favorite color. And her favorite fruit.

Cindy Lou Huffington is proud to be the prettiest girl at Springfield High School. Accomplishments: Longest-serving member of the Varsity Song Leaders (3rd Place State Champions), president of the drama boosters, student editor of the school newspaper The Chipmunk Chronicle, vice president of the yearbook committee. She loves dancing, cheering, singing, drive-in movies, and boys (not in that order). Platform: World Peace. Quote: “I hope to shatter the pre-conceived image of prom queen and, when chosen, will use my intelligence, poise, grace and beauty to bring happiness to those who are less fortunate than I.” Pink is her favorite color.

Betty Jean Reynolds is proud to have a date for the prom, and she can’t believe that Johnny finally got the nerve to ask her. Accomplishments: Member of the Varsity Song Leaders (where she won ‘Loudest Cheer’ at State Championships), all-time high-score on the Chipmunk Bowling Squad (“255 – only 45 more to go!”), member of the Varsity Lady Golfers, loves watching & cheering for the Chipmunk Wrestlers, the Chipmunk Boating Club, the Chipmunk Soccer Shooters, and well, she’s just an all-around proud athletic supporter. Quote: “I’m up for prom queen? That’s about the coolest thing EVER! Cindy Lou’s gonna bust a gut…” Green is her favorite color.

Suzy Simpson is proud to be going steady – three years and counting (“I love you, Richie!”). Accomplishments: Proud member and assistant choreographer of the Varsity Song Leaders (Go Chipmunks!), grand-champion bubble blower at last year’s state fair (“Can you believe it?!”), cub reporter for The Chipmunk Chronicle (where she exposed last year’s lunch room milk scandal), and president of the A.V. Club Appreciation Society. Suzy loves dressing up, and having friends over to play records in her basement rec room. She’s very good with scissors and glue, and helped Missy put together all of the decorations and banners for tonight’s prom. Quote: “L-O-V- E-That-Spells-Love!” Blue is her most favoritest color ever.

Judy Carter is happy to finally get to attend a school prom – having missed both her freshman and junior proms due to unforeseen circumstances (“Thank you, Nurse Hathaway!”). Accomplishments: Past member of the Varsity Song Leaders (member of last year’s 3rd Place State Champion Squad), 1st runner-up for Miss Dairy Darlin’ at the 1957 State Fair, served as the School Nurse TA for 3 years at Springfield High, and voted “Most Likely” for the 1957-58 school year by her fellow classmates in The Chipmunk Chronicle’s Year-End ‘Gathering of the Nuts.’ Judy loves shopping, makeup, high heels, and all her fellow Prom Queen nominees. Quote: “I love you girls! Go Chipmunks!” Judy likes yellow, because it tastes like banana.

SUZY WE'LL LIVE IN A HEAVEN OF LOVE MISSY Right, left. ALL SUGAR IN THE MORNING, SUGAR IN THE EVENING SUGAR AFTER SUPPERTIME BE MY LITTLE SUGAR AND LOVE ME ALL THE TIME WELL THEY take an audible gasp of air. WELL SUGAR IN THE MORNING, SUGAR IN THE EVENING SUGAR AFTER SUPPERTIME BE MY LITTLE SUGAR AND LOVE ME ALL THE TIME I CALL HIM LOLLIPOP, LOLLIPOP (POP) LOLLIPOP! THEY turn their lollipops around to reveal the letters L-O-V-E. However, they’re in the reverse order, spelling E-V-O-L. MISSY ad-libs as she quickly rearranges the girls.

MISSY Oh! Wrong order, girls! When all in place, with lollipops turned backwards… Pop it, pop it...! THEY then reveal the proper order of the lollipops, popping again.

SUZY It spells love. MISSY gathers the lollipops. They got it. I think they got it.

CINDY LOU A special thank you to my boss, Mr. Johnson, down at the Springfield Sweet Shoppe for allowing us to use these marvelous lollipops from his window display. BETTY JEAN Thank you, Mr. Johnson! MISSY Yes – you’re the sweetest! CINDY LOU So as I said before, we’re The Wonderettes… MISSY (whispering) Marvelous. Marvelous… BETTY JEAN also jumps in to correct CINDY LOU. BETTY JEAN Marvelous! p. 8 THE MARVELOUS WONDERETTES - PRODUCTION SCRIPT

CINDY LOU Oh, that’s right. The Marvelous Wonderettes. THEY all quickly point to the banner then strike their pose, accompanied by two distinct noises. ALL Hhmmm, Hhmmm. CINDY LOU But – you know us better as the trophy-winning Springfield High School Song Leaders! BETTY JEAN Go Chipmunks!! MISSY And for those of you who haven't heard by now... CINDY LOU And with B.J. around, who hasn't heard? BETTY JEAN Go Chipmunks!! MISSY We took 3rd place at state again! SUZY holds up a trophy.

SUZY Look everyone! Look! THEY all “ooh” at the trophy. BETTY JEAN has brought a stool center, and SUZY puts the trophy on it.

BETTY JEAN Take that, Chess Club! She points at someone, makes chess move, knocking over the King. Check and mate.

MISSY A big, huge, amazing, very special thank you to our very special song leader leader, Mr. Lee! She indicates a man in the front row. This audience member is now Mr. Lee throughout the play. ALL Thank you Mr. Lee! THEY all raise their hands to their faces (like paws) and make chipmunk faces at him, gnashing their teeth.

BETTY JEAN Let’s show ‘em how we won 3rd place! CINDY LOU Do you think? BETTY JEAN Go Chipmunks! THE MARVELOUS WONDERETTES - PRODUCTION SCRIPT p. 9

THEY move into a line. SUZY pulls out the pitch pipe and plays a double-non-note. SUZY Ready?! ALL Okay! #3: CHIPMUNK CHEER CHIPMUNK, CHIPMUNK, FLIP YOUR LITTLE TAIL CHIPMUNK PRIDE WILL NEVER EVER FAIL WE’RE THE TEAM YOU WON’T DEFEAT WE’RE THE RODENTS YOU CAN’T BEAT CHIPMUNK, CHIPMUNK, FLIP YOUR LITTLE TAIL THEY make the sound of a vocal drum roll. MISSY WE’LL CLIMB YOUR TREE SUZY WE’LL PICK YOUR NUTS CINDY LOU WE’RE HERE TO SAY

BETTY JEAN WE’LL KICK YOUR BUTTS! ALL GOOOOOOO - - - - CHIPMUNKS! THEY show Mr. Lee their chipmunk faces. BETTY JEAN grabs the trophy.

BETTY JEAN Hey – I’m gonna go put it in the trophy case right now! MISSY Betty Jean… BETTY JEAN Don’t do anything without me! BETTY JEAN runs out into the lobby, taking the trophy with her. CINDY LOU, SUZY and MISSY move mikes into place. CINDY LOU sees an opening, and moves her mike into position. CINDY LOU (quickly, before Betty Jean comes back) Now it’s time to sing a song that we learned in Mr. Lee’s 4th period choir class. MISSY Cindy Lou…! SUZY You can’t do that. p. 10 THE MARVELOUS WONDERETTES - PRODUCTION SCRIPT

MISSY That’s Betty Jean’s song! SUZY You’ll get in trouble…! CINDY LOU No I won’t and yes I can. You just sing your part. Music! As SHE turns out, the music begins. #4: ALLEGHENY MOON ALLEGHENY MOON, WE NEED YOUR LIGHT TO HELP US FIND ROMANCE TONIGHT BETTY JEAN returns. SHE is surprised and upset that this song has started without her. SHE ad-libs her way back onto the stage. BETTY JEAN Ha, ha. Very funny. Start over. CINDY LOU, MISSY & SUZY SO SHINE, SHINE, SHINE ON TONIGHT BETTY JEAN Hey! This is supposed to be my song…! CINDY LOU ignores her. BETTY JEAN tries to get support from MISSY and SUZY, then exits. CINDY LOU ALLEGHENY MOON, YOUR SILVER BEAMS CAN LEAD THE WAY TO GOLDEN DREAMS CINDY LOU, MISSY & SUZY SO SHINE, SHINE, PLEASE SHINE CINDY LOU HIGH AMONG THE STARS SO BRIGHT ABOVE THE MAGIC OF YOUR LAMP OF LOVE BETTY JEAN returns, bringing a ‘moon on a stick’ and placing it behind CINDY LOU. BETTY JEAN joins MISSY and SUZY in the vocal backup. CINDY LOU, MISSY & SUZY CAN MAKE HIM MINE CINDY LOU ALLEGHENY MOON, IT'S UP TO YOU PLEASE SEE WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR ME AND MY ONE AND ONLY LOVE ALLEGHENY MOON… BETTY JEAN pulls out a harmonica and plays a solo, upsetting CINDY LOU. ALL SO SHINE, SHINE, SHINE ON TONIGHT THE MARVELOUS WONDERETTES - PRODUCTION SCRIPT p. 11

CINDY LOU ALLEGHENY MOON… BETTY JEAN plays again. CINDY LOU and BETTY JEAN square off before CINDY LOU recovers and sings again for her audience. ALL AH, AH, AHHH BETTY JEAN pulls MISSY and SUZY over to sing directly behind CINDY LOU. CINDY LOU HIGH AMONG THE STARS SO BRIGHT ABOVE THE MAGIC OF YOUR LAMP OF LOVE ALL CAN MAKE HIM MINE BETTY JEAN ‘releases’ the moon, which slowly descends from the top of the stick over and in front of CINDY LOU.

CINDY LOU ALLEGHENY MOON, IT'S UP TO YOU PLEASE SEE WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR ME AND FOR MY ONE AND ONLY LOVE CINDY LOU grabs the moon and poses with it. SHE leads the final set of vocals a capella.

ALL SHINE ON ME TONIGHT – ALLEGHENY CINDY LOU lets go of the moon as it rises up to sit perfectly over her head for the final pose. MOON Applause. MISSY sets microphones for the next song. CINDY LOU grabs the moon, glaring at BETTY JEAN. BETTY JEAN places her hands on it as well, and THEY start to shake the ‘moon on a stick.’ SUZY rushes over and grabs it from them. SUZY Hey! They can see you! SUZY takes the moon away. CINDY LOU and BETTY JEAN look out at the audience, smile, and then rush over to the refreshment table, giggling & chattering. BETTY JEAN blows a noisy raspberry on CINDY LOU’s arm. MISSY gets everyone’s attention. MISSY Attention. Eyes. p. 12 THE MARVELOUS WONDERETTES - PRODUCTION SCRIPT

After a quick check that everyone is paying attention, SHE moves forward. MISSY (CONT’D) Tonight’s entertainment was supposed to be provided by the boys from the glee club… SUZY You know: “The Crooning Crab Cakes.” MISSY Yes, "The Crooning Crab Cakes." But Billy Ray Patton, the lead crab, got suspended from school again. SUZY They caught him hanging out behind the girl’s locker room. Smoking!! MISSY & SUZY Euw! SUZY And last Sunday, his dad, the minister, caught him smoking behind the chapel. MISSY & SUZY Double-Euw! THEY chant together with gestures. Tobacco can kill, and make you ill.

SUZY So don’t be a butthead.

BETTY JEAN Ha! Butthead! She said butthead at the prom…! MISSY Betty Jean…! MISSY prompts SUZY to continue while she crosses to chastise BETTY JEAN. Suzy…

SUZY Oh. Okay. So Billy Ray Patton is the leader of the “Crooning Crab Cakes,” you know, the boys from the glee club, and the “Crooning Crab Cakes” were supposed to sing tonight, but Billy Ray got kicked out of school for being a butthead,… MISSY Suzy! BETTY JEAN Butthead…! MISSY Betty Jean! SUZY … so Mrs. Carter, Judy’s mom, convinced Mr. Lee and the P.T.A. board that it would be a really bad influence on all of the good kids if the “Crooning Crab Cakes” still got to sing at the prom, since the lead crab got in trouble for being a butthead… MISSY Suzy! THE MARVELOUS WONDERETTES - PRODUCTION SCRIPT p. 13

BETTY JEAN Butthead…! MISSY Betty Jean! SUZY …so the Crab Cakes got cancelled, Mr. Lee called Missy’s mom, who called my mom, who called everybody else’s mom, and here we are. (posing with her hands up) Ta da! BETTY JEAN, CINDY LOU & MISSY (mimicking the pose) Ta da. SUZY I mean, my golly, if the boys can do it, so can we. SHE stands, smiling out, giggling.

MISSY (to Suzy) Psst. Psst. MISSY holds up her skirt, indicating her dress.

SUZY Oh. Okay. So when Mr. Lee asked us to sing for the prom… (excited, back to the others) …for the prom! BETTY JEAN, CINDY LOU & MISSY (also excited) The prom! THEY all squeal together.

SUZY …well, we knew we had to do something extra special. So Missy made our dresses. Aren’t they neat-o? MISSY (with a curtsy) 3rd Period Home Ec. Thank you so much. MISSY runs off and brings on a rolling chalkboard. On the chalkboard is written in stacked words: “Springfield High School Is Just Terrific.” SUZY And of course you already heard Ritchie, who’s running the lights. Hi Ritchie! SHE waves to him. The lights flash in response. MISSY Suzy! The lights restore. MISSY begins to erase the writing on the chalkboard. SHE erases from right to left.
