Criddle, George Born 1887, married, father of Carlo. Private, Light Infantry. Died of wounds in Reading War Hospital, 17 August 1916.

Carrott, John C Born 1889 in Rexton, agricultural labourer. Private, Somerset Light Infantry. Killed in action, in France or Flanders, 16 September 1916.

Cavill, Alfred Born 1888, a carter, lived at Capton. Private, Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry Died of wounds, in France or Flanders, 18 October 1917.

Corney, Basil John Butcher Gunner Royal Garrison Artillery According to the Courier (29 March 1916) he was slaughterman and assistant to Percy Hutchings of Stogumber, whose appealed to the Tribunal for Basil to be exempted was dismissed. He enlisted 10 Dec 1915, shot in right knee Oct 1916, never returned to duty and died of wounds at home in 1918, and was buried in Stogumber churchyard.

Taunton Courier 29 March 1916 Eames, Mark Private. Royal Warwickshire Son of W and Annie of Wood Cottage, Wood Lane. Killed in action aged 18, France and Flanders, 29 August 1918, final resting place unknown.

Hellard, John Alexander According to the Taunton Courier (26 August 1916) he was the younger son of Mr and Mrs Edwin Hellard of The Knoll (now Wayshill) in Stogumber, and occasionally played for Somerset County Cricket Club. 2nd Lieutenant, Somerset Light Infantry. Killed in action 2 July 1916 aged 34.

Moles, Thomas L Private, 54th Kootenay Battalion, Canada. Thomas Lionel Moles was born in (Somerset) on 17 November 1891. He served for four years in the Somerset Light Infantry. After leaving the British Army, Moles emigrated to Canada, where in July 1915, Moles enlisted in the 54th (Kootenay British Columbia) Battalion. The 54th Battalion for in 1915, entering France in August 1916. Sadly, Thomas Moles had several convictions for drunkenness and had a poor conduct sheet: Date Offence Punishment 18 December 1915 Absent Without Leave Fined 2 day’s pay 23 March 1916 Absent Without Leave Fined 2 day’s pay 6 June 1916 Absent Without Leave Fined 2 day’s pay 30 June 1916 Absent Without Leave Fined 2 day’s pay

During October 1917, Thomas Moles was ordered to re-join his company which was about to go into action. Instead of going forward, Moles went to a village in the rear areas. He was eventually arrested 3 weeks later, and charged with desertion. At his court-martial Moles was found guilty and sentenced to death. At 05:30 on 22 October 1917, Moles was executed by firing squad. His remains are located in Ypres Reservoir , Plot I, Row H, Grave 76.

Parsons, Robert J Listed as the son of Mr and Mrs Henry Parsons of Vellow, ; husband of Winifred, Annie Parsons of 3 Back, Hooper Street, Dudley Road, Birmingham. Sapper, Tunnelling Depot Company, Royal Engineers. Died of wounds aged 28 on 6 December 1918; buried in Glasgow Western Necropolis, grave/memorial reference P.2818.

Stevens, William James Gunner, Royal Horse Artillery. Died in England, 26 February 1917.

Sweet-Escott, Murray Robertson Reported to be the younger son of Rev Edward Herbert Sweet-Escott and Anna Frances (nee Robertson) of Hartrow Manor. Born 14 December 1887; educated Dulwich College and Marlborough. Lieutenant, 1st Battalion, Kings Liverpool Regiment. Joined December 1909; trained Irish Fusiliers; promoted Lieutenant February 1911; seconded ADC Sir E B Sweet-Escott (Governor, Leeward Islands then Fiji) returning to UK 1913; volunteered foreign service 1914; killed in action on the Aisine near Brayne; buried where he fell.
