    Extract of the survey on Orchard Wyndham, Williton Few houses stay within the same family for 800 hundred years, but Orchard Wyndham is one of them, having been handed down for generations, not always down the male line, but always in the family. The house and garden of Orchard Wyndham are tucked into a ring of low hills inland from the sea at Watchet, with a stream, called Willett, running through the estate. Beyond lie the Brendon Hills, the Quantocks and Exmoor. So well hidden is Orchard Wyndham that it escaped the notice, not only of the marauding Vikings, but the Domesday survey. By that time the land round the present house was well settled, sheltered from the north by a steep bank; on Blackdown, a hill to the south of the house, there are signs of Bronze Age settlement and remains of a Roman fortification. The remains of a Saxon drainage system, hollowed out oak trees rammed together, were found under the Great Hall in the 1960s. Little is known of the history of the garden in the early years, but the land is sheltered and fertile and there is water from the hills; a lake, to the east of the house has an outlet to a stock pond beside the house which is now an attractive feature of the garden. A 13th century garden lay inside a wall south east of the house. The earliest dated record, 1287, shows that the land was owned by the Orchard, or de Horcherd, family who lived there until the 15th century.

    South West river basin district Flood Risk Management Plan 2015 to 2021 Habitats Regulation Assessment March 2016 Executive summary The Flood Risk Management Plan (FRMP) for the South West River Basin District (RBD) provides an overview of the range of flood risks from different sources across the 9 catchments of the RBD. The RBD catchments are defined in the River Basin Management Plan (RBMP) and based on the natural configuration of bodies of water (rivers, estuaries, lakes etc.). The FRMP provides a range of objectives and programmes of measures identified to address risks from all flood sources. These are drawn from the many risk management authority plans already in place but also include a range of further strategic developments for the FRMP ‘cycle’ period of 2015 to 2021. The total numbers of measures for the South West RBD FRMP are reported under the following types of flood management action: Types of flood management measures % of RBD measures Prevention – e.g. land use policy, relocating people at risk etc. 21 % Protection – e.g. various forms of asset or property-based protection 54% Preparedness – e.g. awareness raising, forecasting and warnings 21% Recovery and review – e.g. the ‘after care’ from flood events 1% Other – any actions not able to be categorised yet 3% The purpose of the HRA is to report on the likely effects of the FRMP on the network of sites that are internationally designated for nature conservation (European sites), and the HRA has been carried out at the level of detail of the plan. Many measures do not have any expected physical effects on the ground, and have been screened out of consideration including most of the measures under the categories of Prevention, Preparedness, Recovery and Review.

This order will enable Atkins to carry out laying of water main in this road. The Order becomes effective on 20 July 2015 and will remain in force for eighteen months.     Early transport on Exmoor By Jan Lowy This work is based on notes made for the presentation to the Local History Group, December 2020 Map of West Somerset to Tiverton This shows the area we are mainly talking about. This map is dated 1794. Packhorse bridge at Clickit For centuries men used feet to get about, then horses, then horse and cart, and horse and carriage. There were also boats on rivers and round the coast. On land they needed marked routes to follow, which needed to be kept clear. Stone age people travelled long distances in search of suitable flints for their tools and weapons, but it was during the Bronze age (3000 – 1200BC) that tracks were regularly used - probably something like this. Often on high ground, enabling travellers to see hazards more easily, including those with criminal intentions, avoiding densely wooded and marshy river valleys until forced to descend to cross streams. Just off road to Webbers Post Many modern roads follow the same route: long distance routes such as across the Blackdown and Brendon hills linking the ridgeways of Dorset and Wiltshire with Devon, (as here) and local routes, like tracks along the Quantocks, Mendips and Poldens. As we know, the Romans built a national system of good roads, but after the Romans left the roads were not maintained. There were not many wheeled vehicles, and fewer long journeys, so only local tracks were needed. By the Middle Ages, there was again considerable traffic on the roads. Each parish was responsible for maintaining the roads within its bounds.
