The Southern Railway's Response to Bus Competition, 1923-39 CORE Metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk Provided by White Rose E-theses Online Public passenger transport in inter-war Britain: the Southern Railway’s response to bus competition, 1923-39 REGINALD ARTHUR MURRAY DAVIES Doctor of Philosophy University of York Railway Studies SEPTEMBER 2014 Abstract Abstract Scholarly criticisms of the quality of British railway management between the world wars have focused partly on the allegedly inept reaction to the threat of bus competition. By contrast this thesis shows that the Southern Railway (SR) developed policies and practices with regard to the bus industry that were rational and broadly successful given the legal, political and economic circumstances. The SR was probably atypical of the four major inter-war railways. Because of the social and economic geography of the areas it served, it suffered less from bus competition and a smaller decline in receipts from passenger trains. Nevertheless in common with the rest of the industry, management action was greatly hampered in the 1920s by political opposition to direct bus operation. A key finding is that legislation in 1928 had the unintended effect of determining that the railways instead entered into partnerships with bus companies. In the SR’s case this policy produced considerably greater returns on capital than historians have hitherto thought. The SR influenced rather than controlled its associated bus companies, allowing them considerable commercial freedom. Even so the SR was largely able to shape network development to its advantage and to introduce measures, such as through ticketing, that were seen by contemporaries as key elements in reducing public-transport competition and thus enhancing consumer benefits. However, in practice such measures probably proved more advantageous to the company than its passengers. In sum the SR’s policies and practices in relation to bus competition were much more adroit than scholars have previously allowed. This study cannot demonstrate that the quality of the SR’s management was equally good across the company’s multi-faceted business. Nevertheless in this limited sphere, the SR achieved the most advantageous result possible, an outcome reflecting considerable credit on its managers. 3 Domine, defende nos Contra hos Motores Bos! Railway involvement in bus services: an important but unexplored topic ‘There is clearly room for further research in this field.’ JOHN HIBBS1 A key topic emerging amongst historians is the study in a number of countries of the railways’ struggle after 1918 to maintain market share in the face of road competition for both passenger and freight traffic.2 In the United Kingdom such scholarly interest is not new. Studies of the effectiveness of the railways’ response, one measure of the quality of their management, began as early as 1928.3 However, the present debate has its roots around 1968 and has continued sporadically ever since.     ‘Food Miles’: Britain’s Transition from Rail to Road-based Food Distribution, 1919-1975 Thomas James Spain MA Doctor of Philosophy University of York Railway Studies September 2016 Abstract Britain’s railways were essential for the development of the British economy throughout the nineteenth century; however, by 1919 their seemingly unassailable position as goods carriers was about to be eroded by the lorry. The railway strike of September 1919 had presented traders with an opportunity to observe the capabilities of road haulage, but there is no study which focuses on the process of modal shift in goods distribution from the trader’s perspective. This thesis therefore marks an important departure from the existing literature by placing goods transport into its working context. The importance of food as an everyday essential commodity adds a further dimension to the status of goods transport within Britain’s supply chain, particularly when the fragility of food products means that minimising the impact of distance, time and spoilage before consumption is vital in ensuring effective and practical logistical solutions. These are considered in a series of four case studies on specific food commodities and retail distribution, which also hypothesise that the modal shift from rail to road reflected the changing character of transport demand between 1919 and 1975. Consequently, this thesis explores the notion that the centre of governance over the supply chain transferred between food producers, manufacturers, government and chain retailer, thereby driving changes in transport technology and practice. This thesis uses archival material to provide a qualitative study into the food industry’s relationship with transport where the case studies incorporate supply chain analyses to permit an exploration of how changes in structure might have influenced the modal shift from rail to road distribution.

The original bus with this number entered service at Alperton garage in 1952 and the final RT 2906 was withdrawn at Seven Kings garage in 1974, being scrapped the same year. Both plates are in ex-vehicle condition.[2] 3 London Underground ENAMEL ROUNDEL SIGN from King's Cross St Pancras Station. This is a medium-size sign950 measuring 51'' (131cm) across by 42'' (107cm) high, estimated to date from the 1980s/90s, and comes complete with brass frame. It has been mounted on board for display purposes. In excellent condition. [1] 4 Set of Green Line Coach leaflets bearing names of former independent companies comprising Route AW dated25 26-4-32 and 1-6-32 (both Bucks Expresses (Watford) Ltd), Route BG dated 5-8-32 (Skylark Motor Coach Co Ltd) and Route CF dated 24-8-32 (Regent Coach Service). All lightly used, the last has some stains. [4] 5 1930s LGOC/LPTB PANEL TIMETABLES comprising routes 79/115/620 (25-3-32), 494/194 (30.12.30), 113 (28.2.34),40 418/70B & 70D (25.4.34) and 81 (17-2-37). All with some wear/damage to varying degrees. [5] 6 London Transport 'Gibson' TICKET MACHINE no. 21391, a letter codes machine which appears to be in working250 order and prints a good ticket with 'London Transport' still on the plate.

In the early part of the next decade the Company secured contract work (including services for the National Coal Board, which was a prominent employer in the area), which resulted in the fleet expanding. In 1956 a tours and excursions licence was granted and several more vehicles were purchased. Dearneways used an attractive blue and cream livery from the start and fleet numbers were introduced around 1954, although not always in sequence. The local firm of Harold Oscroft, who traded as Irene Motors, was taken over in 1960. Two vehicles were included in the deal, neither of which operated for Dearneways.

These ancient land grants, deeds, wills, mar- riages, and church and cemetery records contain the history of the northwest Carolina frontier, the doorway to the South and West. Rowan County originally included practically all of central and northwestern North Carolina and extended westward to the Mississippi River, having no western boundary line. While the vast amount of public and other records are in existence in this region, there is no information here to indicate whence these settlers came and why they came.
