‘Food Miles’: Britain’s Transition from Rail to Road-based Food Distribution, 1919-1975 Thomas James Spain MA Doctor of Philosophy University of York Railway Studies September 2016 Abstract Britain’s railways were essential for the development of the British economy throughout the nineteenth century; however, by 1919 their seemingly unassailable position as goods carriers was about to be eroded by the lorry. The railway strike of September 1919 had presented traders with an opportunity to observe the capabilities of road haulage, but there is no study which focuses on the process of modal shift in goods distribution from the trader’s perspective. This thesis therefore marks an important departure from the existing literature by placing goods transport into its working context. The importance of food as an everyday essential commodity adds a further dimension to the status of goods transport within Britain’s supply chain, particularly when the fragility of food products means that minimising the impact of distance, time and spoilage before consumption is vital in ensuring effective and practical logistical solutions. These are considered in a series of four case studies on specific food commodities and retail distribution, which also hypothesise that the modal shift from rail to road reflected the changing character of transport demand between 1919 and 1975. Consequently, this thesis explores the notion that the centre of governance over the supply chain transferred between food producers, manufacturers, government and chain retailer, thereby driving changes in transport technology and practice. This thesis uses archival material to provide a qualitative study into the food industry’s relationship with transport where the case studies incorporate supply chain analyses to permit an exploration of how changes in structure might have influenced the modal shift from rail to road distribution. -

What is this document? We (primarily Lee) have looked at what the bus network might look like under option 24/7 in a pilot area, at the request of Philip Whitehead (meetings March and April 2016) The area selected was from (in the north) the Bath – Corsham – Chippenham – Calne – Royal Wootton Bassett corridor through to the Bath – Bradford-on-Avon – Trowbridge – Westbury – Warminster corridor to the West, covering all of West Wilts, services within that area out to Devizes. There is always considerable overlap across boundaries with public transport services, so you'll find significant services off the edge listed here, many of which are adjustments of ongoing supported services to continue to provide a logical, useful service. The suggestions here reduce the number of vehicle diagrams in the area from 59 to 52 – a saving of around 14%. The number of drivers required would be reduced somewhat less due to extension of some ENCTS time only services to cover journeys to and from work and in the evening and on Sundays and perhaps where appropriate a night bus. In general, very very few places / streets have lost their services, whilst areas such as the Pewsham Estate in Chippenham and Pickwick Road in Corsham see regular buses return, having been withdrawn under the current system. A number of new journey opportunities are provided too (some significant, some making use of much better bus / train connectivity) but there are cases where a change of vehicle will now be needed in place of a through service. Currently commercial services which thrive as “turn up and go” operations remain hardly changed – we are not proposing messing with what works – keeping the good. -

Pioneer Steamships in Queensland Waters
PIONEER STEAMSHIPS IN QUEENSLAND WATERS. (By A. G. Davies). (Read at a meeting of the Historical Society of Queensland, March 31, 1936). My purpose in this paper is to give you a concise history of the building up of Queensland's maritime trade—or at all events the part which the steamship played in it. I, however, want first to refer in pass ing to two vessels using steam power which had noth ing to do with mercantile activities. These were the "Sophia Jane" and the "James Watt," both of which were mentioned in my paper on "The Genesis of the Port of Brisbane." After having been engaged in the coastal trade, mostly in New South Wales, for a few years the "Sophia Jane" was broken up in 1845. In the following year a wooden paddle steamer named the "Phoenix" was built in Sydney and the engines which had been taken out of the "Sophia Jane" were put into her. This vessel was engaged in the service between Sydney and the Clarence River for five years, and was then wrecked at the entrance to that river. All that is left, therefore, of the engines of the first steamship to come to Aus- ralia lies in the shifting sands in that locality. When the s.s. "James Watt" was broken up in 1847, her engines were put into another vessel, the "Eagle," which had been built at Pyrmont, Sydney. The "Eagle's" first visit to Moreton Bay was made on August 8, 1849. She was then in charge of Cap tain Allen, who previously had been coming to More- ton Bay in the steamship "Tamar. -

Hydrological models can provide estimates of streamflow pre- and post- observations, which enable greater understanding of past hydrological behaviour, and potential futures. In this paper, a new multi-objective calibration method was derived and tested for 303 catchments in the UK, and the calibrations were used to reconstruct river flows back to 1891, 15 in order to provide a much longer view of past hydrological variability, given the brevity of most UK river flow records which began post-1960. A Latin Hypercube sample of 500,000 parameterisations for the GR4J model for each catchment were evaluated against six evaluation metrics covering all aspects of the flow regime from high, median and low flows. -
