INTRODUCCIÓN Encontramos orquídeas en todos los continentes, adaptadas a ambientes tan diferentes como la tundra polar, las zonas costeras, los páramos o las selvas tropicales; con formas de crecimiento variadas, se encuentran desde plantas diminutas que semejan musgos, hasta plantas de varios metros de altura. De todas las familias botánicas, es la de mayor número de especies, calculándose que existen entre 20.000 y 35.000. Para Colombia se estiman unas 3000 a 3500 especies (Dresler 1981), lo cual representa del 10 al 15% del total mundial, por lo tanto el país a la par con Ecuador ostentan los primeros lugares en cuanto a riqueza de este grupo de plantas (Wilde 1995). -

Determination of Sites of Special Importance for the Conservation Of

Colombia is the country with the highest number of orchid species (4270), whose optimal habitat is cold and humid forests. However, the outlook for conservation is alarming, considering that deforestation is causing the loss of millions of hectares of forests. This situation has led to the existence of 206 endangered orchid species. Therefore, this research was conducted to determine Sites of Special Importance for the Conservation of Threatened Orchid Species in Colombia (SSICO), through an analysis of their spatial and altitudinal distribution using various databases, to make a selection of nature reserves on a municipality scale, using Marxan software, and employing relevant parameters (richness, rarity, and IUCN category). Furthermore, the results were later compared with the Protected Areas System, determining their coverage to propose SSICOs. 674 records of the presence of threatened orchids in 277 municipalities were obtained. Urrao, Abrego, and Frontino were the areas with the greatest richness and rarity. Marxan selected 47 municipalities located mostly in the Andes region, and four SSICOs were prioritized, which are located in the Antioquia, Norte de Santander, Nariño and Putumayo provinces. These SSICOs, in addition to being points of great biodiversity, are areas with special socio-economic characteristics that influence the management of natural resources. These areas require timely attention, research, and intervention by environmental authorities because of their importance for conserving orchids and Andes Forests. -

For the purpose of this study we sequenced the ITS region (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2) of nrDNA representing nuclear genome and the plastid region trnL-F (including intron of trnL gene and trnL-trnF intergenic spacer). The ITS matrix includes 97 samples representing 86 species and the trnL-F matrix includes 94 samples representing 86 species. We focus mainly on the genus Angraecum, however the other genera of Angraecinae are also included (Aeranthes, Campylocentrum, Dendrophylax, Cryptopus, Calyptrochilum, Lemurorchis, Jumellea, Neobathiea, Oeonia, Oeoniella, Sobennikoffia). Additional 43 sequences, including an outgroup (Polystachya modesta) and other representatives of the subtribes Aeridinae (Aerides) and Aerangidinae (Aerangis, Angraecopsis, Erasanthe, Solenangis), were obtained from NCBI resources. Bayesian analysis using MrBayes 3.1.2 on the combined ITS/trnL-F matrix were performed. The monophyly of Angraecinae with an inclusion of Aerangidinae is highly supported by both methods (93 BP/100 PP). The Angraecoid taxa formed two well supported clades, namely clade I (89 BP/100 PP) and clade II (84 BP/100 PP). New classification based on both molecular and classical tax- onomy studies is presented including a key to the genera. -

Ecology and Development Series No. 38, 2006 Editor-in-Chief: Paul L.G.Vlek Editors: Manfred Denich Christopher Martius Charles Rodgers Feyera Senbeta Wakjira Biodiversity and ecology of Afromontane rainforests with wild Coffea arabica L. populations in Ethiopia Cuvillier Verlag Göttingen ABSTRACT Wild Coffea arabica occurs as undergrowth in the Afromontane rainforests of southwest and southeast Ethiopia. Ethiopia is the center of origin and diversity of Coffea arabica. In spite of their importance, the conservation of Afromontane rainforests with their genetic resources of wild Coffea arabica has been neglected in the past although these forests are under continuous threat. The present study was conducted in five forest regions, namely Harenna (southeast), Bonga, Maji and Berhane-Kontir and Yayu (southwest). Floristic analyses reveal 651 species and 118 families. About 5% of the species are endemic to Ethiopia and about 50% of the species occur in only one of the forests. Alpha diversity is high in the Bonga forest, whereas beta and gamma diversity are high in the Berhane-Kontir forest. A cluster analysis reveals five plant communities: Chionanthus mildbraedii-Psychotria orophila, Afrocarpus falcatus, Trilepisium madagascariense-Dracaena fragrans, Whitfieldia elongata-Zanha golungensis and Coffea arabica. Four plant communities follow the four forest regions, while the Coffea arabica community represents plots at all sites where wild coffee occurs abundantly. The studied rainforests are floristically different, while wild coffee populations and physiognomic similarity are the common features of the geographically separated forests. The plant communities of the Yayu and Berhane-Kontir forests are linked to Guineo-Congolian floral elements and can be considered as “transitional rainforests.” Wild populations of Coffea arabica are widely distributed over SE and SW Ethiopia, but are patchy locally. -

Schmitt Montane rainforest with wild Coffea arabica in the Bonga region (SW Ethiopia): plant diversity, wild coffee management and implications for conservation Cuvillier Verlag Göttingen ABSTRACT The montane rainforests of Ethiopia are the center of origin and genetic diversity of Coffea arabica L. (Rubiaceae). They form part of the Eastern Afromontane biodiversity hotspot due to the high threat of deforestation. Concepts for conservation of these forests and their wild coffee populations are urgently needed. For the present study, vegetation surveys were carried out in four forest fragments in the Bonga region (southwestern Ethiopia) situated between 1,560 and 2,280 m asl. A total of 309 vascular plant species including 16 endemics were recorded; 36 % of the species occur in all forest fragments, while 43 % are present in one fragment only. Ordination methods reveal that plant species composition is strongly influenced by the altitudinal gradient. The forest fragment Koma, which is located above 1,800 m asl, is characterized by high pterophyte diversity and high abundance of Afromontane endemics or near endemics. Forest below 1,800 m asl has a greater diversity of tree species and pytogeographical elements, and is further divided in a moister type (Mankira forest fragment) and a drier type (Kayakela forest fragment). Many species of the understory are frequent and abundant, so that the representative species number for a forest fragment can be captured with 10 study plots. In contrast, many tree species and epiphytes have low frequency, and the recording of their representative species number in a forest fragment requires 29 study plots.
