Email: [email protected] Abstract. Since 1991, researchers from approximately 45 nations have participated in eight International Conferences on Serpentine Ecology (ICSE). The Conferences are coordinated by the International Serpentine Ecology Society (ISES), a formal research society whose members study geological, pedological, biological and applied aspects of ultramafic (serpentine) ecosystems worldwide. These conferences have provided an international forum to discuss and synthesise multidisciplinary research, and have provided opportunities for scientists in distinct fields and from different regions of the world to conduct collaborative and interdisciplinary research. The 8th ICSE was hosted by Sabah Parks in Malaysia, on the island of Borneo, and attracted the largest delegation to date, 174 participants from 31 countries. This was the first time an ICSE was held in Asia, a region that hosts some of the world’s most biodiverse ultramafic ecosystems.

Biotechnological strategies of propagation may satisfy the market demand and are useful for conservation programs. Hypothesis: Vigorous seedlings of S. hernandezii can be produced in vitro by asymbiotic seed germination techniques and the addition of chitosan to the culture medium in the temporary immersion system (RITA®) and in semi-solid medium systems. Methods: The first step was the in vitro germination of seeds obtained from a mature capsule of wild plants, followed by multiplication via adventitious protocorm induction known as protocorm-like bodies, using plant growth regulators. For this purpose, we utilized Murashige and Skoog (MS) basal medium amended with 0.5 mg/L α-Naphthaleneacetic acid, combined with different concentrations of 6- Benzylaminepurine (1, 3, and 5 mg/L).

The following six phytogeographic regions (at the rank of floristic province) are distinguished and outlined within eastern Indochina: Sikang-Yunnan Province, South Chinese Province, North Indochinese Province, Central Annamese Province, South Annamese Province and South Indochinese Province. Short descriptions of these floristic units are given along with analysis of their floristic relationships. Special floristic analysis and consideration are given to the Orchidaceae as the largest well-studied representative of the Indochinese flora. 1. Background The Socialist Republic of Vietnam, comprising the largest area in the eastern part of the Indochinese Peninsula, is situated along the southeastern margin of the Peninsula.

Chromosome numbers and ploid levels in 12 species and two hybrids in two orchid genera as Chloraea and Gavilea from Chile were investigated. The chromosome numbers of nine species and one hybrid were commonly 2n=44 or ca.44 (diploid), while those of three species were 2n=88 or ca.88 (tetraploid). One hybrid crossed between plants of diploid and tetraploid was 2n=66 (triploid). Two genera of Chloraea and Gavilea were closely related to each other cytologically with the basic chromosome number of x=22 and the karyomorphology of the simple chromocenter type at resting stage. In addition, the speciation of these members might be occurred and correlated with the diversification of their karyotype and the polyploidization. Foulkesweg 37, 6700 ED Wageningen, The Netherlands Abstract The three subtribes which are recognized within the tribe Vandeae are represented in the tropical African and Malagasy regions. All taxa of the Vandeae have a monopodial growth habit. The first subtribe, Sarcanthinae, is mainly Asian-Australasian, but a few of its species occur in Madagascar and in Africa. The other two subtribes, Angraecinae and Aerangidinae, are both represented in the latter two regions. The Angraecinae ischaracterize d by the presence of a short rostellum, but this iselongate d in the Aerangidinae. According to earlier authors there is a correlation between presence of the short rostellum and a basic chromosome number of x= 19i nth e Angraecinae, and between the presence of an elongated rostellum and a basic number of x = 25 in the Aerangidinae. The results presented in this paper are placed in perspective with the chromosome numbers recorded by other authors. From the resulting chromosome number survey it appears that only part of the Angraecinae (Aeranthes, several species of Angraecum. Cryptopus and Jumellea) have a basic number of x = 19; some members of the Angraecinae (other species of Angraecum) were found to have a basic number of x = 21,24 and 25. The Aerangidinae is not characterized by a single basic number of x= 25 but by aserie s ranging from x = 23t o x= 27,o f which x= 23,24 and 25ar e the most frequent.

Essas ca- racterísticas contribuíram para posicioná-la entre as famílias de plantas mais importantes na horticultura, de- vido às espécies utilizadas em paisagismo e como flores de corte, e também por serem objeto da dedicação de cultivadores amadores e colecionadores (Goldblatt e Manning, 2008). No entanto, as iridáceas são conhecidas desde a Antiguidade também por seus valores alimentícios, principalmente pela espécie Crocus sativus, da qual se obtém o valioso açafrão. As iridáceas compreendem c. 2030 espécies distribuídas por todos os continentes, principalmente no hemisfério Sul e, preferencialmente, em ambientes que sofrem seca sazonal (Goldblatt et al., 2008).
