At the same time it is impossible to discuss this branch of the subject without overlapping in some details the existing works on Arms and Armour, but such repetition has only been included because it bears directly on the making, selling, or wearing of armour. I have intentionally omitted all reference to the sword and other weapons of offence, for this would have unduly increased the size of the present work, and the subject is of such importance that it deserves a full consideration in a separate volume.

BLACK DAWN THE ROLEPLAYING GAME THIS BOOK IS INTENDED AS A STAND ALONE PRODUCT THAT ALLOWS A COMPREHENSIVE, YET SIMPLE, ROLEPLAYING EXPERIENCE IN ANY UNIVERSE WHERE MAGICK, FASTER THAN LIGHT TRAVEL AND EXTRA TERRESTRIAL RACES COULD BE A REALITY. BLACK DAWN - Equipment [Manufacturers] CORE RULES CHARACTER GENERATION Each character has 8 main statistics, 8 secondary statistics and 4 combat statistics. The combat stats are each used in separate ways and change during the course of action, influenced by wounds and exhaustion etc. The way to generate these statistics is only dependant on the 8 primary stats. The rest are the result of an equation that usually involves only the primary statistics. The best way to generate statistics is based upon the power level of the campaign to be undertaken. This power level is an abstraction of the level of competency for the starting characters. The GM should be careful to ensure the characters can actually make it to the main gist of the campaign. Killing off characters that are „too weak‟ when you as the GM assigned their „power level‟ is bad form. When assigning power levels to the characters an amount of character-points are given with which to generate primary STATS. Remember that the human average for a primary STAT is 10. There is an exception to the secondary statistics. That is Appearance. This is purposefully left to the agreement of GM and player. A general guideline to the APP stat is to remember it should be within 5 or 6 points either side of the CHA stat.

  • Pole-Weapons in the Sagas of Icelanders: a Comparison of Literary and Archaeological Sources Jan H
Acta Periodica Duellatorum, Scholarly Volume, Articles 177 DOI 10.1515/apd-2016-0006 Pole-weapons in the Sagas of Icelanders: a comparison of literary and archaeological sources Jan H. Orkisz, Chapitre des Armes (Paris), [email protected] Abstract – The Icelandic sagas are a major source of information on the Vikings and their fighting prowess. In these stories, several mysterious pole-weapons appear, which are often called “halberds”, for lack of a better word. In order to better identify what these weapons could have been, and to provide a better understanding of how the sagas relate to the Viking-age events they describe, we confront textual and archaeological evidence for several of these weapons (the höggspjót, the atgeirr, the kesja, the krókspjót, the bryntroll and the fleinn), keeping in mind the contextualisation of their appearances in sagas. The description of the use of each weapon allows to pick several candidates likely to correspond to the studied word. Without a perfect knowledge of what context the authors of the sagas wanted to describe, it appears to be impossible to give a final answer. However, we show that some specific types of spears are good candidates for some of the studied weapons. Keywords – Early Middle Ages; Viking Age; pole-weapons; archaeology. I. INTRODUCTION I.1. Context Vikings, their weapons and fighting prowess have fascinated people and raised a great interest since the 19th century, with the rise of romantic nationalism. Among the major sources that stimulate the imagination about these Scandinavian warriors are the Icelandic sagas, which tell the tales of many Viking-age heroes.

INFORMATION TO USERS This was produced from a copy of a document sent to us for microfilming. While the most advanced technological means to photograph and reproduce this document have been used, the quality is heavily dependent upon the quality of the material submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or notations which may appear on this reproduction. 1. The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)”. If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting through an image and duplicating adjacent pages to assure you of complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a round black mark it is an indication that the film inspector noticed either blurred copy because of movement during exposure, or duplicate copy. Unless we meant to delete copyrighted materials that should not have been filmed, you will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. If copyrighted materials were deleted you will find a target note listing the pages in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., is part of the material being photo graphed the photographer has followed a definite method in "sectioning” the material. It is customary to begin filming at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue from left to right in equal sections with small overlaps. If necessary, sectioning is continued again—beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete.

Table of Contents Foreword 2 Tournament Helmet 3-16 Probably Dresden or Annaberg. Circa 1580. Linstock 18-26 Second half 17th Century. Saxon Electoral Court and Armory. Hunting Sword 28-40 Dated 1662, Dresden. Wedding of Erdmuthe Sophie of Saxony. Partizan 42-53 Swiss Guard, Friedrich August of Saxony. Circa 1725. Institutional Clients 54 Foreword The Saxon Electoral Court stands for one of the most important collections of arms and armor in the world. Rich deposits of silver let to a tremendous wealth of Saxony in the 16th and 17th centuries that were spent for a prestigious courtly life encompassing fine arms for tournament use, representation and the equipment of life guards. Even the latter impress by their extravagant decoration and manufacture documenting the fact that these arms not only served a practical function of defense but also were intended to emphasize the prestige and luxury of the Electors. Besides the precondition of wealth it was a deep-rooted culture at the court and later at the museums who took care for the inventory, which favoured conditions that allowed this treasure to overcome the centuries in an extraordinary well state of preservation. Many courts in Europe had wonderful collections of arms and armor, but at Dresden the items have been taken care for with outstanding conscientiousness in the course of time. Consequently the objects are often in a near flawless condition with leather being preserved, iron surviving without any larger traces of corrosion or blued surfaces still intact. It seems unnecessary to mention that suchlike exhibits appear very attractive for art lovers, collectors and museums of international significance alike.

Covering the Paleolithic to the Age of Sail, GURPS Low-Tech is your guide to TL0-4 equipment for historical adventurers, modern survivalists, post-apocalypse survivors, and time travelers. It surveys current historical and archaeological research to present accurate gear, including: • Weapons. Stone axes, steel blades, muskets, and heavy weapons (from catapults to cannon) to grant a fighting edge whether you face bears, phalanxes, or high-seas pirates. • Armor. Pick coverage, quality, and materials (even exotica like jade!) to suit your budget, and then calculate protection, weight, impact on stealth, and more. • Transportation. Travel aids such as skis and floats; riding gear for horses, camels, and elephants; and vehicles ranging from oxcarts and rafts to war wagons and low-tech submarines. • Survival Gear. Simple tools and local materials to let you find your way, stay warm and dry, and feed yourself in the wilderness. • Tools. Everything you need to gather basic resources, craft finished goods, work in the literate professions, spy, or thieve. • Medicine. Treat illness and injury with herbs, acupuncture, and surgery. GURPS Low-Tech requires the GURPS Basic Set, Fourth Edition. The information on real-world equipment is useful for any campaign set prior to 1730, as well as historical fantasy. By William H.
