  • Introduction
    INTRODUCTION This study is an approach toward a history of the trade and industrial connections of the British Isles with Northern Europe during the Bronze Age. The work is divided into three parts. In Part I the types of tools, weapons and ornaments involved in exchanges between the British Isles and Northern Europe are discussed individually. In Part II a period-by-period trade history is attempted. Comparative chronology is discussed in Part III. The term 'Northern Europe' as here employed includes all the territory from the mouths of the Scheldte and the Rhine to the Vistula; and from the foot af the Central German highlands (baunded approximately by the 6oo-foot contour, which is shown on our distribution maps) to Denmark and South Sweden. The archaeo­ logi cal boundary of NorthernEu rope does not, of course, really include the 'Vestern and Southern provinces of the Netherlands (it would be interesting to lmow why the cultures of the North European plain so often fade out between the Hunze and the Ussel). Norway and Central and Northern Swedenwere included within the intended scope of this study, but search of the museums failed to reveal any evid­ ence af British Ol' Irish connections with those areas, until at the very end of the Bronze Age a few links appear with Central Sweden and Gotland. Our North European area has thus a certain geographical unity; it comprehends the low-lying lands facing the North and Baltic Seas, with belts of peat bog alternating with heaths and moraines. The entire area is completely barren of natura l metal resources, except on its southernfringe in Saxo-Thuringia.

Das abgelaufene Jahr 2009 wird uns allen, insbe- sondere aber den Entscheidungsträgern in den Kommunen noch lange in Erinnerung bleiben und bewegen. Die vom Landtag be- schlossene und durch das Gemeindeneugliederungs-Grundsätzege- setz defi nierte Gebietsreform ist im Landkreis Harz größtenteils voll- zogen. Ziel dieser Reform ist die Schaff ung gemeindlicher Strukturen, die in der Lage sind, ihre eigenen und übertragenen Aufgaben fach- gerecht, beständig, effi zient und mit hoher Qualität zu erfüllen. So werden nach Umsetzung des Gesetzes im Landkreis Harz ab 1. Januar 2010 insgesamt 13 Einheitsgemeinden existieren, wovon im Rahmen der Gebietsreform vier neue Einheitsgemeinden - Harz- gerode, Oberharz am Brocken, Nordharz und Osterwieck - entstan- den sind. Die Städte Ballenstedt, Blankenburg, Halberstadt, Ilsenburg, Thale und Wernigerode haben ihr Territorium durch Eingemeindun- gen vergrößert. Die Städte Falkenstein/Harz und Quedlinburg sowie die Gemeinde Huy bleiben nach derzeitigem Kenntnisstand in ihrem Bestand unverändert. Neu gebildet wird auch die Verbandsgemeinde Vorharz mit den Mit- gliedsgemeinden Ditfurt, Groß Quenstedt, Harsleben, Hedersleben, Schwanebeck, Selke-Aue und Wegeleben. Die Gemeinden Allrode, Neudorf, Bad Suderode, Rieder, Westerhau- sen und die Stadt Gernrode haben bis zum gegenwärtigen Zeitpunkt keine oder keine genehmigungsfähigen Gebietsänderungsverträge abgeschlossen. Für diese Gemeinden wird es aller Voraussicht nach nur eine gesetzli- che Lösung geben. Ein konkreter Zeitplan zur weiteren Umsetzung der gesetzlichen Phase der Gebietsreform im Jahr 2010 ist noch nicht Sargstedts Bürgermeister Michael Kinkal (links) und Halberstadts Oberbürger- bekannt.

UNESCO-Geoparks are clearly defi ned, unique areas in which sites and landscapes of international geological signifi cance can be found. Each is supported by an institution responsible for the protection of this geological heritage, for environmental education and for sustainability in regional development which takes into account the interests of the local population.
