Sometimes we have to make changes at short notice so the only way to be really sure of what’s going on is to come to church! -- 3 -- Jeremy writes... How many days did the Bible story of creation take? No, it’s not a trick question, but it is one most people get wrong. They say the creation story took six days, and on the seventh day God rested. What is often ignored is that the seventh day, the day of rest, was also part of the creation process. A moot point possibly, especially given science’s insights as to how everything came about. But to hold that view is to forget the purpose of the Creation story, and other such early stories in the Bible. These pre-history tales, which cannot be realistically dated, and are set before any discernible point in history each serve a major purpose in the stories of the Bible. They frame everything which comes after them, and set the questions the reader is meant to ask as they read through what comes next. Broadly speaking, they address the issue of why is our world, and humanity, the way it is. Maybe you’re a glass half full sort of person, or a glass half empty one (or the pedant who points out the glass is actually full, just that half of its content is air). Maybe you think people are basically good, but sometimes do bad things, or basically bad, but are able to rise above it. Are business people and politicians inherently selfish, allowing only a few drops of goodness to spill over to others, or are they actually social entrepreneurs, generating good for many? Whichever you may be, this frames part of your world view – the way you see, and more importantly, interpret the world around you. The Bible seeks to shape our world-view, and it does it largely through those early stories. Although it does have a trick up its sleeve: As the story goes along, the view is expanded, and so the world-view that goes with it has to change too as we grapple to accommodate a newer, greater, vision.

-- 4 -- So, what about that seventh day. Simple: Rest is an intrinsic part of creation. We were never built for continual striving. We need rest, time with loved ones, time alone, to recover who we were meant to be. When we rest, swim in the sea, sit down and take our time over food and conversation, we take part in creation: We re-create. So, whatever this Summer brings you, I hope it brings you opportunity to re-create. And, maybe, to revaluate just how you look at the world and your fellow humanity. And, in the Autumn, I’ll be offering the opportunity to look closer at those formative stories in the Bible as we work through the Bible Course, provided by the Bible Society, over eight sessions. See you there for a little re-creation? Jeremy

-- 5 -- WI News July 2017 July has seen us taking advantage of the fine weather with several outdoor-related activities. Ken Basterfield from The Blackberry Honey Farm gave us a very interesting talk about his life-long passion for bee-keeping and in particular the work they are now doing to make the honey business environmentally sustainable. The hives are regularly moved around the East countryside to take advantage of the rich diversity of pollen-laden plants and this made us consider how we can balance bee-friendly cultivated and non-cultivated in our gardens. Our business discussion focused on the 2017/18 national resolutions to tackle reducing micro plastics from entering our seas and to alleviate loneliness. During the autumn, we will debate how we can impact upon these locally. Our walking group had a fun-filled day walking to and from Branscombe with equally enjoyable refreshment stops at The Masons Arms and The Fountainhead before our return to Beer for tea and cakes! We held a coffee morning and a lunchtime garden party to raise funds with guests from other WIs, where more excellent food and good company was appreciated and we are grateful to Frances (and Steve) for allowing us the run of their cottage and garden. Our planned cycling event along the Exe to Plympstone, coincided with the day of persistent heavy rain so this had to be postponed. Although we do not have any formal meetings in August, our regular activities continue and we are holding a cream tea party at the end of the month, this time at Barbara Greaves`. We will also be running a tombola stall at the Craft Fair on 30th July, so hope you can support us. We will resume our full programme in September and on the 6th, Tony Burgess will be talking about in the Blitz and World War Two in Seaton. Guests, (male and female) are welcome to our talks. If you are new to the village or would like to make new friends, fancy extending your range of activities or learning a new skill come and meet us. You will be very welcome. • -- 6 -- -- 7 -- ROYAL BRITISH LEGION BEER BRANCH The newly formed Royal British Legion Beer Branch will hold their official launch on Saturday 19th August in the Congregational Church, Beer. The day will commence at 10,00 a.m. with refreshments, bacon butties and stalls. Richard Scott will have a display of military history from the village and Beer lacemakers will show their expertise during the morning. The official ceremony will take place at 11.30 outside the Congregational Church. As custodians of Remembrance it is important that we never forget those who have served or are serving their country and it is the Legion’s responsibility to ensure we commemorate all past events. We organise the Festival of Remembrance in the Royal Albert Hall and are involved in the Parade at the Cenotaph. This year we commemorate the end of the war in the Falklands – 35 years ago and the following WW1 Conflicts. Battle of Passchendaele 100th Anniversary 31st July to 10th November 2nd Battle of El Alamein 75th Anniversary 23rd October to 11th November Battle of Cambrai 100th Anniversary 20th November to 7th December It is worthy of note that the 2nd, 8th & 9th Battalions of the Devonshire Regiment were recorded as being at Passchendaele. Bells will be rung across the country to mark the Anniversary of the Battle of El Alamein on the 11th November. The Legion is known primarily for the Poppy Appeal which this year raised £46m nationwide and in Devon £1.2m. This is entirely due to the trust and loyal support we receive from the general public who acknowledge the work of their military. We support serving and ex serving military and spend £1.6m per week nationally on their welfare and their families and dependants. Please come along and support your local Royal British Legion and find out where your money goes when you donate to the Poppy Appeal. If you would like to join as a member, we would be delighted to see you. Any queries please contact: Carole Arnold 07710 809 765 or Soux White 07974160767

-- 10 -- Altar Guild News August 2017 Many thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make the July Flower Festival a success. The Church was decorated with very interesting and imaginative displays to depict the theme of Classic Books. The coffee morning held in Church was well attended, the refreshments served on each of the three days went down well, especially the cream teas served on Sunday prior to the Songs of Praise Service, and lots of folk had fun at the Quiz Night held in The Dolphin. Overall, a successful weekend which raised useful funds for the Church.

Date of next meeting: Tuesday 12th September 10am.

-- 11 -- Beer Transport Problems? Is access to your doctors surgery or district hospital becoming a problem due to age or infirmity? There is a local service that may be able to help. The Seaton Voluntary Car Service (operated by TRIP Community Transport in ) could get you to medical appointments (including opticians, chiropody, and dental) that you could otherwise miss. It is a chargeable service, but is carried out by local volunteers using their own cars so costs are kept to a minimum. The weather for our 12th Annual Duck Race Day was very warm and sunny. £645.90 was raised. The Lifeboat "R & J Welburn" and Lyme Regis Lifeboat "Spirit of Loch Fyne" gave a display. Nick Marks Lifeboat Operations Manager and Brian Street Coxwain of the Lyme Regis Lifeboat came ashore and Nick Marks started the first race. My son Alastair did a great job as Duck Catcher and no ducks escaped out to sea. Children from Beer Primary School took it in turns to start the races with our Volunteer Bob Palacio. Ten heats of yellow plastic ducks raced down Beer Brook. The winning duck number two sponsored by Ann Roberts of Seaton won Heat 1 and went on to win the Grand Final and received the prize of the print Mid-Sumer Bay by John Miller that was donated by Marine House at Beer. The very popular Duck Tombola organised by Annette Spry raised £106. This included the continues… -- 13 -- …continued Name The Duck Competition. Also thank you to EVERYONE that helped and all of you for coming, the nurses are all very grateful to you! Annie, Gill, and co. • -- 17 -- AMBULANCE WISH - granting terminally ill patients their wish Earlier this year a photograph was released showing a woman on a stretcher in Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum. She was there to take a final look at her favourite Rembrandt painting. Her visit had been made possible by a Dutch charity that helps terminally ill patients fulfil their last wish.

"I've learned that people who are going to die have little wishes," says Kees Veldboer, the ambulance driver who founded the Stichting Ambulance Wens - or Ambulance Wish Foundation - after an impulse to help a patient. In November 2006 he was moving a terminally ill patient, Mario Stefanutto, from one hospital to another. But just after they put him on the stretcher, they were told there would be a delay - the receiving hospital wasn't ready. Stefanutto had no desire to get back in the bed where he had spent the past three months, so Veldboer asked if there was anywhere he would like to go. The retired seaman asked if they could take him to the Vlaardingen canal, so he could be by the water and say a final goodbye to Rotterdam harbour. It was a sunny day, and they stayed on the dockside for nearly an hour. "Tears of joy ran over his face," says Veldboer. "When I asked him: 'Would you like to have the opportunity to sail again?' he said it would be impossible because he lay on a stretcher." Veldboer was determined to make this man's last wish come true. He asked his boss if he could borrow an ambulance on his day off, recruited the help of a colleague and contacted a firm that does boat tours around Rotterdam harbour - they were all happy to help, and the following Friday, to Stefanutto's astonishment, the ambulance driver turned up at his hospital bedside to take him sailing. In a letter written weeks before his death Stefanutto wrote, "It does me good that there are still people who care about others… I can tell you from my own experience that a small gesture from someone else can have a huge impact -- 18 -- BEER HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY 92nd ANNUAL FLOWER SHOW Thursday 3rd August Doors open 2.30pm

-- 19 -- Working to bring our history to life and to conserve our environment for future generations

July saw our Annual General Meeting when Nick Jones was elected as Chairman. Henry Jaggers and Peter Crofts stood down as Trustees, both having served for 6 years. Sarah Acton and Liz Asbury are the new Trustees. If you would like to play a part in managing the organisation we are allowed to co-opt additional Trustees. The Treasurer, Trevor Wood, recommended keeping the subscriptions at £2.50 for a further year. Please note that membership fees are now due. The Chairman’s report for 2016 was as follows: “ I'm pleased to report another very busy and successful year and a milestone for our Fine Foundation Centre with the construction and development of the new display areas. But first, as ever, may I say a big thank you to all our members and other supporters, including of course all the Trustees, committee members, and helpers. Without you all we could not carry on. Over the past year we have arranged various walks, rock pooling sessions, beach cleans, etc., and have organized and hosted visits from the Scouts, schools, and a local history group from Chagford: all of which bring a little income in the way of donations as well as helping to spread our message and hopefully gain further support in the future. We have been well represented at other events both in the vicinity, and at events run by Devon Wildlife Trust (DWT), Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (East Devon AONB), and the Trust. In addition we have provided activities for children at Beer Regatta and in support of other village events. We are also supporting the Devon Greater Horseshoe Bat Project and were privileged to host their "Bat Beacon" display in The Bomb Shelter over the winter months. As suggested above, our connections with other organisations continue to increase, notably with the Jurassic Coast Trust, with which several of us are heavily involved, and with Seaton Jurassic.

-- 20 -- As you know, we are all volunteers and the running, maintenance, and development costs are funded entirely by donations. I am pleased to say that donations from visitors and others held up well over the past year. Of greatest import was a large sum donated by the Fine Family Foundation which has generously covered two thirds of the cost of our new display area. The Bomb Shelter donations too were a very significant source of funds as was the donation earned from Axe Valley Runners for organizing our usual Grizzly water station. As well as money we have had some generous donations of books and photos, especially a collection of old local books from Eileen Boalch. The new display areas I mentioned earlier, on and under the front of the building, were completed only quite recently but have already received favourable comment. I believe they add greatly to what we have to offer as well as improving the general appearance of the building. To some extent the display material is still being developed but the overall theme is geological change and mankind's impact on the environment. Our message is mainly intended for children but if you have not already seen the display, please take this opportunity to have a look after the meeting. Another innovation this year is the "Beautiful Beer - Beach Clean" facility whereby we are making litter-pickers, bags and gloves freely available for anyone to use during opening hours. This is proving to be very popular. Thanks to Norah for organizing this and to the Beer Bag Project for their help with funding it, also to Tower Services for donating bags and gloves to get us started. Yet another novelty this past month has been our "Poet in Residence" Sarah Acton, courtesy of the Jurassic Coast Trust. She is already one of our local members, is with us tonight, and has offered herself as a Trustee should you wish to elect her. Sarah's Poet in Residency will be moving on to other East Devon centres as the Summer progresses. On a more general note, Beer Village Heritage members have continued research into local buildings, etc., and Ruth's "Blow Ins" enquiries continue as ever. We also intend to display new work on lace making before long.

continues… -- 21 -- …continued As you may know, I am no longer eligible to offer myself for election on this occasion as I have now served six years as a Trustee, the maximum permitted under our Constitution, I hope my last couple of years as Chairman has come up to the standard of the previous occupants of that office. However, I intend to remain as committed to Beer Village Heritage as ever and offer my very best wishes, and my assistance if needed, to whoever we elect later on this evening. Henry Jaggers, Chairman (retiring), Beer Village Heritage. ” We continue to support the Bat Friendly Beer project. If you would like some seeds of plants which will attract moths and other pollinators which bats like to eat, please let Norah know. They can be sown from September. And you can still book out the bat detector by contacting: http://devonbatproject.org/devon-bat-survey/ It’s a great opportunity to take part in a worthwhile survey to find out more about these elusive mammals. Have a look at the blog on the Jurassic Coast website - http://jurassiccoast.org/exploring-branscombe-beer/ - for a report of the Branscombe to Beer and back walk. I gather that at least one of the participants has walked back up to Beer Head to identify the various thistles there! We realised recently that we talk about places like “The Self Shelter” without explaining where they are. All of the following are in Jubilee Gardens. The Self Shelter is opposite the RNLI hut, and houses the large interpretation board. The Fishermen’s Shelter is behind the RNLI hut and looks down on the beach as well as out to sea. The Wooden Shelter is higher up in the gardens, and is the only wooden structure there. And while we’re thinking of shelters and seats, have you heard the chaffinch in Charlie’s Yard? Lastly, Jubilee Gardens has just been voted the Best Picnic Spot in Britain – see the result on: http:www.countryfile.com/article/uks-best- picnic-spots-revealed Most of our events are advertised on our website - www.beervillageheritage.org.uk-, via our email list and on posters. Let us know if you would like to be on our communications list and be notified of what is going on. We try to keep those on our email list informed of a variety of heritage related activities around the area. If you’d like to know more, just ask one of our regular helpers such as Nick, Mike, Chris, Carol, Trevor, Jean, Henry or Norah. • -- 22 -- BEER PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER - JULY

PARISH COUNCIL CASUAL VACANCY There is now a casual vacancy on the Parish Council. For further information about the role or process please speak to an existing Councillor or contact the Parish Clerk [email protected] or come along to a Parish Council meeting to find out what is involved. The next Parish Council meeting is 5 September, 7.15pm in the Balcony Room of the Mariners’ Hall. The new seasonal dog restrictions are now in force on the beach – in addition to existing dog controls, dogs must now be on leads near beach huts and the cafes on East beach. Please see the signs on the beach for more information and encourage visitors to observe the new dog restrictions to ensure that everyone can enjoy the beach. PARKING ON THE BUS STOP AT BEER CROSS – the local bus companies are getting very frustrated at the number of vehicles which park/unload on the bus stop. The bus stop is well used by Axe Valley Mini Travel, First Bus Company and the Mendip Mule. Parked cars on the bus stop make it very difficult and sometimes impossible for the buses to manoeuvre. These bus services are highly valued by many local residents and are currently being threatened by illegal and obstructive parking. Please observe parking restrictions at the Cross and help us safeguard these essential bus services.

-- 23 -- Are you Anxious?

For most people, a disquiet is present in life. An unhappiness. An anxiety. It keeps returning in your thoughts. It may be a regret over something that happened in the past. It may be fear about something that lies in your projected future. Whatever the cause of your disquiet, your mind is manufacturing it, your thoughts are fuelling it. Is there a cure? Can you do anything to remove this burden, this affliction? Yes, there is. Become ‘Present’. That is, become consciously aware of the present moment. What are your body’s sensations now? What sounds? What scents? What physical sensations? This chair underneath you. Your feet on the floor. This in-breath that you take; this out-breath. Inhabit this moment completely. In that conscious acceptance of the present moment, ask yourself: ‘Do I have a problem right now, at this moment? Do I have a burden at this moment? Can the origin of my unhappiness still exist in me while I am consciously attentive to the Now?’ Remember, the external world is neutral. It is what it is. It is the mind that imposes stories onto events and which generates emotional content about them. When you see this, when you understand what your mind does, then you can detach from reaction and response. When you see this, then you can allow the world to be the way it is, and live in the only moment there ever is in your life – not past, not future – Now. Problems, mind-created, exist in time: future and past. Future and Past are mind-projections. They are not real. The only reality you ever inhabit is Now. You cannot be both ‘Present’ and unhappy at the same time.
