Chagford is a thriving community which offers a cosmopolitan lifestyle in the countryside. In 2015 it was named by The Sunday Times as ‘the best place to live in rural Britain’, with its history, lifestyle, traditional retail offering, annual literary and film festivals and community spirit all contributing to its success.

The town is home to a good range of independent shops where antiques and fine art can be found, as well as a delicatessen and convenience stores. In the centre is an octagonal building, known as the ‘pepperpot’. This is the Market House building and was once the site of an ancient stannary court that met twice a year.

There are a number of excellent pubs and a post office, as well as a health centre and chemist. The 13th Century 5 star, Three Crowns Inn, has recently been refurbished and has an excellent reputation. Nearby Park is a renowned and award-winning two Michelin starred restaurant and hotel.

The church of St Michael the Archangel, dedicated in 1261, features carved roof bosses with the traditional tin miners’ emblem which can be found in various locations all over the moor. The church, it is claimed, inspired RD Blackmore’s novel ‘Lorna Doone’.

With a population of just 1,500 Chagford’s community thrives and supports numerous clubs and pastimes including tennis, table tennis and keep-fit. The town also boasts an open-air swimming pool fed by a local river.

Chagford’s Stone Lane Gardens, home to National Collections of birch and alder trees, was hailed as ‘a reminder of a world too precious to be ignored’ by gardener and broadcaster Roy Lancaster. DELIGHTFUL DARTMOOR

Dartmoor National Park has been attracting visitors for hundreds of years and today it is a magnet for walkers. Chagford sits on the , a 95-mile route around the edge of the moor for both hikers and cyclists. One of Britain’s 15 national parks, Dartmoor is well-known for its tors – hills topped with granite outcrops – and for its population of Dartmoor ponies. There are also numerous standing stones which reveal something of the moors’ prehistoric human habitation, and thousands of hut circles, the remains of Bronze Age homes.

Dartmoor’s rugged landscape has inspired many novels, including ‘War Horse’ by Michael Morpurgo which later became a Stephen Spielberg cinema box office hit, featuring spectacular moorland scenes. Views of Dartmoor can be enjoyed from Stannary Gardens.
