ODUMUNC 2018 Issue Brief Tyranny or Victory! Simón Bolívar’s South American Revolt by Jackson Harris Old Dominion University Model United Nations Society of the committee, as well as research, all intricacies involved in the committee will be discussed in this outline. The following sections of this issue brief will contain a topical overview of the relevant history of Gran Colombia, Simón Bolívar, and Spanish-American colonial relations, as well as an explanation of the characters that delegates will be playing. This guide is not meant to provide a complete understanding of the history leading up to the committee, rather to provide a platform that will be supplemented by personal research. While there are a number of available online sources the Crisis Director has provided the information for a group of helpful books to use at the delegate’s discretion. The legacy of Simón Bolívar, the George Washington of South America, is anything but historical. Enriqueta was again ill with migraine, and kept her bed; neither did I go in the evening to the salita, where Garland played rocambor with his friends. Friday, 14th of March 1879. Ricardo read me an article from the Cologne Gazette which said that the plague which had committed great ravages mostly in the vicinity of Astrakhan, owed its origin to the clothes and other articles, which, torn off on the field of battle from half putrefied corpses, had been carried by the Cossacks to their homes on their return from the late Turco- Russian war. -

Ideas of liberty, equality, and democratic rule found their way across the seas to European colonies. In Latin America, most of the population resented the domination of European colonial powers. The time seemed right for the people who lived there to sweep away old colonial masters and gain control of the land. Sorne beieve that it is very easy to put upon one's head a crown and have all adore it; But 1 believe that the period of rnonarchy is pass and that thrones will not be up- to-date in public opinion until the corruption of men chokes love of freedorn." 1. Augustin de Iturbide was proclaimed Emperor of Mexico as the result of a mutiny lcd in Mexico City by a sergeant called Pio Marcha. 131 Regarding the battle of Pichincha, he said: "Sucre is the Liberator of Ecuador." No better praise could be given bis worthy lieutenant. Once in Quito, he received the alatming news from Perú, wbich province had been left by San Martín, that several serious defeats had been suffered by the independents. He irnmediately made ready to free the viceroyalty from Spain, realizing that while Perú remained under Spain the independence of Colombia would be in danger. -

People living in the Andean rural areas were caught between two fires- the terrorists and the military sent to control the latter- and many innocent people were killed or disappeared. Based on these events, Julio Ortega wrote the novella Ayacucho, Goodbye. In this narrative, the dead body of an indigenous peasant leaves his grave in Ayacucho and begins a journey to Lima, the capital of Peru, looking for the parts of his body that were not buried with him, which is really a quest for justice. -

Independence Movements in the Americas During the Age of Revolution
Roberto Breña (El Colegio de México) Independence Movements in the Americas during the Age of Revolution Abstract This essay gives an overview of the four independence movements or revolutions that took place in the Americas during the last quarter of the 18th century and the first quarter of the next one (that is, c. 1775-1825): the independence of the Thirteen Colonies, the emancipatory and independence process of Haiti, the Spanish American revolutions, and the political process that ended up in the independence of Brazil. Contrary to what some Atlantic and global historians have suggested in the past few years, the peculiarities of each one of these processes impedes, or at least notably complicates, any effort of homogenizing them or of finding patterns or sequences among them. In this regard, chronological proximity may be misleading; proximity does not imply causality. Contacts and connections were present throughout the hemisphere during those fifty years, no doubt, but as always with academic trends (that may also be academic vogues), these contacts and connections should be taken with caution and discernment. CHAPTER 4 | IN DE PEN DENCE PATRIOT VICTORIES IN SPANISH AMERICA, 1815– 25 Meanwhile, Spanish American nativists regained momentum after 1815. By that time, Napoleon had met defeat at the battle of Water- loo. Fernando VII had recovered his throne, renounced the liberal constitution of Cádiz, and set out to crush patriot rebels in America. Spanish recalcitrance left the rebels nowhere to go but forward. In South America, Spanish royalist forces held the Peruvian Andes until ultimately defeated— in a great, continental “pincer” maneuver— by patriot armies that had originated on the distant plains frontiers of Venezuela and Argentina. In Mexico, Creoles entered an alliance with the heirs of the Morelos movement and backed reluctantly into in de pen dence. The guerrilla followers of Father Morelos had remained strong in the rugged country south of Mexico City after their leader’s death in 1815, continuing their stubborn fight but unable to defeat the royalists. Then Euro pe an events intruded once again when Spain had its own liberal revolution in 1820. Spanish liber- als forced the tyrannical Fernando VII to restore the constitution. The mystique of the monarchy suffered, and many formerly royal- ist Mexican Creoles felt betrayed. Within months, a Creole army commander named Agustín de Iturbide began to parlay with the guerrillas. His contact on the patriot side was Vicente Guerrero, a mestizo (partly, it seems, of African descent) and man of the peo- ple. When Iturbide and Guerrero joined forces, the inde pen dence of Mexico was at hand. 112 PATRIOT VICTORIES IN SPANISH AMERICA, 1815– 25 Iturbide and Guerrero rallied a winning co ali tion with guar- antees of an inde pen dent, constitutional Mexican monarchy that preserved traditional religious and military privileges and offered social “union” (vaguely implying the equality of all Americanos with Peninsular Spaniards). -
