The collection provides a valuable look into daily life in the viceroyalty. Documents to and from Military leaders on both sides ofthe I'ar for Independence describe day to day events of the war(reouests for supplies, mess, prisoner and hospital lists, etc.) Among the items by patriots represented in the collection are: a decree by Simon Bolivar, dated 1825, setting up a school system that "la debe igualmente a todos ...individuos."; a decree by Toraas de Heres creating the coat-of-arms of Pen'., and the heraldry and wording for silver and, gold coins of the new government: a list by Jose Medina of the survivors of the "Vendedores" squadron after'the battle <£ Ayachucho- a letter of Jose de San "Martin to Rrancisco de Paula Otero: a letter by Antonio Jose de Sucre to Manuel Martinez de Aparicio; and a letter by Jose de La Mar to Joaquin de la Pezuela. Amonp; the loyalists represented are: Jose Fernando de Abascal y Sauza, Fernando VII, Jose Antonio de Areche, Geronimo de Marron y Lorabera, Jose de Mendizabal e Imaz, Joaquin de la Pezuela, Jose Manuel Goyeneche, Manuel Quimper. Also in the collection are two letters by Secretary of State •viliiam P. Se7-7ard, and two 16th century documents signed by the "conquistadores" Francisco Pizarro and Juan de la Torre. Hundreds of thousands have fanned out southwestward, southward, and southeastward into various parts of the Pacific world. Many thousands have moved eastward to Hawaii and be- yond to the mainland of North and South America. Other thousands have been borne to Panama and to Cuba. The movement was in part forced, or at least semi-forced. This movement was the consequence of, and it like- wise entailed, many problems of a social and economic nature, with added political aspects and implications. It was a movement of human beings which, while it has had superficial notice in various works, has not yet been ade- quately investigated. It is important enough to merit a full historical record, particularly as we are now in an era when international understanding is of such extreme mo- ment. The peoples of the world will better understand one another if the antecedents of present conditions are thoroughly and widely known.

    The Spanish Navigations in the SPANISH LAKE (Pacific Ocean) and their Precedents From the Discovery of the New World (Indies, later America) Spanish explorers threw themselves with “gusto” into further discoverings and expeditions. They carried in their crew not only the “conquerors” and explorers, but also priests, public administrators who would judge the area’s value for colonization, linguists, scientists, and artists. These complete set of crew members charted the coasts, the currents, the winds, the fauna and flora, to report back to the crown for future actions and references. A very important part of the Spanish explorations, is the extent and role of local peoples in Spain’s discoveries. It was the objective of the crown that friendly connections and integration be made. In fact there were “civil wars” among the crown and some “colonizers” to enforce the Laws of Indies which so specified. Today, some of this information has been lost, but most is kept in public and private Spanish Museums, Libraries, Archives and private collections not only in Spain but in the America’s, Phillipines, the Vatican, Germany, Holland, and other european countries, and of course the United States, which over its 200 year existence as a nation, also managed to collect important information of the early explorations. Following is a synopsis of the Spanish adventure in the Pacific Ocean (Lago Español) and its precedents.     TEXTO: EL CONVENIO DE VERGARA (1839) Convenio celebrado entre el Capitán General de los Ejércitos Nacionales D. Baldomero Espartero y el Teniente General D. Rafael Maroto. Art. 1º. El Capitán General don Baldomero Espartero recomendará con interés al Gobierno el cumplimiento de su oferta de comprometerse formalmente a proponer a las Cortes la concesión o modificación de los fueros. Art. 2º. Serán reconocidos los empleos, grados y condecoraciones de los generales, jefes y oficiales, y demás individuos dependientes del ejército del mando del teniente general D. Rafael Maroto, quien presentará las relaciones con expresión de las armas a que pertenecen, quedando en libertad de continuar sirviendo defendiendo la Constitución de 1837, el trono de Isabel 2ª y la Regencia de su augusta Madre, o bien de retirarse a sus casas los que no quieran seguir con las armas de fuego. Los que prefieran retirarse a sus casas siendo generales y brigadieres obtendrán su cuartel para donde lo pidan con el sueldo que por reglamento les corresponda: los jefes y oficiales obtendrán licencia limitada o su retiro según reglamento.     The Spanish in Hawaii: Gaytan to Marin Donald Cutter The Spanish legend, that somehow Spain anticipated all other Europeans in its discovery and presence in most every part of the New World, extends even to the Pacific Ocean area. Spain's early activity in Alaska, Canada, Washington, Oregon, and California reinforces the idea that Spain was also the early explorer of the Pacific Islands. The vast Pacific, from its European discovery in Panama by Vasco Nunez de Balboa, until almost the end of the 18th Century, was part of the Spanish overseas empire. Generous Papal recognition of Spain's early discoveries and an attempt to avert an open conflict between Spain and Portugal resulted in a division of the non-Christian world between those Iberian powers. Though north European nations were not in accord and the King of France even suggested that he would like to see the clause in Adam's will giving the Pope such sweeping jurisdiction, Spain was convinced of its exclusive sovereignty over the Pacific Ocean all the way to the Philippine Islands. Spain strengthened both the Papal decree and the treaty signed with Portugal at Tordasillas by observing the niceties of international law. In 1513, Nunez de Balboa waded into the Pacific, banner in hand, and in a single grandiose act of sovereignty claimed the ocean and all of its islands for Spain. It was a majestic moment in time—nearly one third of the world was staked out for exclusive Spanish control by this single imperial act. And Spain was able to parlay this act of sovereignty into the creation of a huge Spanish lake of hundreds of thousands of square miles, a body of water in which no other European nation could sail in peaceful commerce.
