The first two want full membership, the neutral Swedes are afraid of being left out in the cold once their EFTA partners are inside. While most Danes are for entry, many Norwegians are sceptical. They wonder what will happen to their farming and fisheries. And both countries are keen to preserve their own standards of social justice. The Swedes meanwhile want to be half in and half out. If it wants new members, the EEC will have to be flexible. Scandinavia exists. It's a fact which citizens of the EEC and of Britain or Ireland tend to forget when they talk of enlarging the Community. But two of the three Scandinavian countries, Norway and Denmark are candidates for membership, and their ties with the third, Sweden, weigh heavily on their minds as they negotiate. All three in turn have ties with Finland. And all four Nordic countries must take account of the Soviet Union, anxious as ever for the disunity of western Europe. -

NATO As a Value Institution: Do Democracy and Human Rights Matter?
NATO as a Value Institution: Do Democracy and Human Rights Matter? The Spanish, Greek and Turkish Cases Georg Agnalt Edell Fall 2019 Master's thesis in Peace and Conflict Studies, Department of Political Science Word count: 24.734 Preface: I wrote this thesis in order to shed some light on a subject that came to fascinate me through my time in college. Are the rules regarding democracy and human rights in NATO just words on a page or do they carry any weight in real life too? As each alliance member have had different political trajectories and histories, I thought that the importance they put into these values should also differ. By focusing on a broader range of cases than other writers have done before me, this topic also enabled me to fill a knowledge-gap, something I put great value in doing. This thesis would not have been possible without the help, love and support of my fellow students, friends and family. A special acknowledgment should also be given to Janne Haaland Matlary, whose guidance and scholarship have been invaluable in writing this thesis. Lastly I would be remiss to not acknowledge my own effort and hard work. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart. 2 Table of Contents Abstract:.....................................................................................................................................................5 1.1: Introduction:........................................................................................................................................6 1.2: NATO and cooperation:......................................................................................................................7 -
Fighting for Chile
Fighting for Chile: Conflicts and Consensuses in the Norwegian Movement for Solidarity with Chile, 1973-1979 Ragnar Øvergaard Aas University of Oslo MITRA4095 — Master’s thesis in Modern International and Transnational History IAKH — Department of Archaeology, Conservation, and History Spring 2020 Abstract This thesis investigates the transnational solidarity movement for Chile as it evolved in the Norwegian context following the 1973 Chilean coup. Centring itself on the two main national umbrella organisations for the solidarity movement in the years between 1973 and 1979, Solidaritetskomiteen for Chile and Chileaksjonen i Norge, the thesis analyses the political conflicts that made a bipartisan approach to the solidarity cause become unviable. The coup in Chile struck at the core of the 1970s Zeitgeist, turning it into one of the paradigmatic events of the Global Cold War resulting in the crystallisation of a unique radical imaginary surrounding Chile. With a particularly forceful Maoist movement attempting to use this imaginary to disseminate their ideology through the solidarity movement and controlling the solidarity committee, the solidarity movement became a political arena in which the political and ideological conflicts of the era played themselves out. This resulted in the bifurcation of the movement and the existence of two rival solidarity committees competing for establishing themselves as the main national organisation for the movement. Moreover, the thesis seeks to further our understanding of the shift from an anti-fascist and anti-imperialist emphasis to one based on human rights occurring within the solidarity movement, regarding it chiefly as a consequence of the lack of clear consensuses among the political Left in the 1970s. -

The Centre for European and Asian Studies
Nick Sitter, PSA 2004, p.1 The Centre for European and Asian Studies REPORT 2/2004 ISSN 1500-2683 Beyond Government and Opposition? The European Question, Party Strategy and Coalition Politics in Norway Nick Sitter A publication from: Centre for European and Asian Studies at Norwegian School of Management Elias Smiths vei 15 PO Box 580 N-1302 Sandvika Norway Paper prepared for the UK Political Studies Association conference, 2004 BEYOND GOVERNMENT AND OPPOSITION? THE EUROPEAN QUESTION, PARTY STRATEGY AND COALITION POLITICS IN NORWAY Nick Sitter Department of Public Governance, The Norwegian School of Management BI The British application for membership of the European Economic Community in July 1961 came less than two months before the election that cost the Labour party its parliamentary majority and inaugurated four decades of minority and coalition government. Not only did the British application place the controversial question of whether to apply for EEC membership on the Norwegian Labour (and now minority) administration’s agenda, it introduced a question that has cast a shadow over coalition politics ever since. Participation in European integration has long divided both the centre-right and centre-left wings of the party system, and with the 2005 election a year and a half away it continues to do so more than ever. With the leaders of the two mainstream centre-left and -right parties both declaring that application for membership of the European Union is more important than coalition politics, and their respective potential coalition partners prioritising opposition to EU membership, the scene is set for intense coalition games and negotiations in the run-up to the 2005 elections and in all likelihood yet another minority government that builds alliances in different directions on economic and foreign policy questions.
