    1 BYRON’S POEMS ABOUT POETS Some of the funniest of Byron’s poems spring with seeming spontaneity from his pen in the middle of his letters. Much of this section comes from correspondence, though there is some formal verse. Several pieces are parodies, some one-off squibs, some full-length. Byron’s distaste for most of the poets of his day shines through, with the recurrent and well-worn traditional joke that their books will end either as stuffing in hatshops, wrapped around pastries, or as toilet-tissue. Byron admired the English poets of the past – the Augustans especially – much more than he did any of his contemporaries. Of “the Romantic Movement” he knew no more than did any of the other writers supposed now to have been members of it. Southey he loathed, as a dreadful doppelgänger – see below. Of Wordsworth he also had a low opinion, based largely on The Excursion – to the ambitions of which Don Juan can be regarded as a riposte (there are as many negative comments about Wordsworth in Don Juan as there are about Southey). He was as abusive of Keats as it’s possible to be, and only relented (as he said), when Shelley showed him Hyperion. Of the poetry of his friend Shelley he was very guarded indeed, and compensated by defending Shelley’s moral reputation. Blake he seems not to have known (“Blake” was him the name of a well-known Fleet Street barber). The only poet of whom his judgement and modern estimate coincide is Coleridge: he was strong in his admiration for The Ancient Mariner, Kubla Khan, and Christabel; about the conversational poems he seems blank, and he feigns total incomprehension of the Biographia Literaria (see below).

    Summer 1972 VoL. 40 No. 3 The GfJROCEEDINGS of the VERMONT HISTORICAL SOCIETY Beyond Humor: Will Rogers And Calvin Coolidge By H. L. MEREDITH N August, 1923, after Warren G. Harding's death, Calvin Coolidge I became President of the United States. For the next six years Coo­ lidge headed a nation which enjoyed amazing economic growth and relative peace. His administration progressed in the midst of a decade when material prosperity contributed heavily in changing the nature of the country. Coolidge's presidency was transitional in other respects, resting a bit uncomfortably between the passions of the World War I period and the Great Depression of the I 930's. It seems clear that Coolidge acted as a central figure in much of this transition, but the degree to which he was a causal agent, a catalyst, or simply the victim of forces of change remains a question that has prompted a wide range of historical opinion. Few prominent figures in United States history remain as difficult to understand as Calvin Coolidge. An agrarian bias prevails in :nuch of the historical writing on Coolidge. Unable to see much virtue or integrity in the Republican administrations of the twenties, many historians and friends of the farmers followed interpretations made by William Allen White. These picture Coolidge as essentially an unimaginative enemy of the farmer and a fumbling sphinx. They stem largely from White's two biographical studies; Calvin Coolidge, The Man Who Is President and A Puritan in Babylon, The Story of Calvin Coolidge. 1 Most notably, two historians with the same Midwestern background as White, Gilbert C.

    1 POEMS WRITTEN FOR, TO, OR CONCERNING TERESA GUICCIOLI edited by Peter Cochran [The poems here complement those in Poems about Italy .] Stanzas to the Po Stornelli To Teresa Guiccioli Francesca of Rimini “Could love for ever …” The Prophecy of Dante The date of birth of Teresa Gamba Ghiselli was unknown until quite recently: she was born in 1798. 1 Educated at Santa Chiara, a school run on principles advanced for the time, she was married to Alessandro Guiccioli – thirty-seven years her senior – on March 7th 1818. She had her first affair, with Cristoforo Ferri, in mid-1818, having met Byron briefly on March 10th of that year, at a Venetian conversazione held by the Countess Albrizzi. They met properly on the night of April 2nd / 3rd 1819 at the Countess Benzoni’s (just after Byron had dispatched Don Juan II to England), and fell in love. It was the last of Byron’s affairs, and lasted in theory until his death in 1824. It was a complete infatuation on both their parts – on being told in 1819 that Teresa was near to death, Byron contemplated suicide. Alessandro Guiccioli – with whom Byron shared an interest in the theatre – tolerated their liaison, and Byron even lived in his palazzo at Ravenna. Byron was friends with Teresa’s father, Ruggiero Gamba, and her brother Pietro, both of whom shared his liberal politics, dangerous in an Italy run by Rome and by the Austrians and Bourbons. Eliot proposed that we consider Byron as a Scottish poet. 1 Since then, anthologies of Scottish verse and histories of Scottish literature seldom neglect to mention, though always cursorily, Byron's rightful place in them. The anthologies typically make brief reference to Byron and explain that his work is so readily available else­ where it need be included in short samples or not at al1.2 An historian of the Scots tradition argues for Byron's Scottish­ ness but of course cannot treat a writer who did not use Scots. 3 This position at least disagrees with Edwin Muir's earlier ar­ gument that with the late eighteenth century passing of Scots from everyday to merely literary use, a Scottish literature of greatness had passed away.4 Kurt
