Cut off the from the faux fur. On the left side, mark the fur for cutting. It will help if you have a drafting triangle so the edges are square. two strips of fur 10” wide X 36” long. When you cut faux fur, you cut from the back. You can use shears or short embroidery scissors. Just make sure they are sharp at the tips. Slide the scissors points up between the backing and the fur. Cut only the backing, not the fur.

Seam at the center (will be at the ) making sure the nap runs down each side. Hold the two pieces together (10” side) and tuck fur to inside if necessary. (Since nap is running down, there should be little to tuck.) at a right angle every inch or so and set the machine for straight stitching. Adjust length to 3.0. Stitch 1/4” . Finger press open.

Choose your embroidery design. You need a design that is more filled in, otherwise, it will be lost in the fur nap. If you’ve not embroidered on fur before, you might want to do a test piece first. Hint: place the test piece in the same spot as on a scarf. If the test turns out beautifully, there is no need to repeat! Another hint: choose the colors of your embroidery to blend or match the colors in the lining.

Follow the basic directions for embroidery on your machine. However, you can’t hoop fur. Cut a piece of Sulky® Sticky+® stabilizer about 2-3” larger than the hoop. Hoop the stabilizer. Remove the paper cover and press the back of the fur to the sticky surface, making sure the nap is running down. It’s important to check and recheck the fur nap placement with regard to Faux Fur Scarf Instructions Page Two your design and how the design is embroidered in the hoop. Lay a sheet of Sulky® Solvy® on top of the fur and pin the four corners outside the hoop through all layers. If preferred, baste instead.

Embroider your design. When complete, take it out of the hoop and tear away excess stabilizer on back and front. Don’t worry about the wisps of Solvy® on the front embroidery. When the scarf is all finished, spritz with a little water from a spray bottle. It won’t hurt the fur and it will dissolve the wisps. Add any beads or decoration to the design.

Cut lining to match: cut two pieces 10” X 36”. Seam at the neckline.

When sewing a napped fabric to a non-napped fabric, it’s important to prevent creeping. Along each of the four 72” edges, make a tiny mark every 5”. On the lining, press each 10” end up 1/4” towards the left side. This will be the you will hand stitch later.

Working with the lining on top (this is important!) match the 5” marks on the lining with the 5” marks on the fur and pin at those marks. Now go back and , stretch and pin in between. Slowly stitch a 1/4” seam on both sides, stretching the lining if necessary. Don’t stitch the ends.

Now you have a long tube. Finger press the seams. You can’t iron fur but if the seams aren’t quite flat enough, center one seam up on the ironing board, set the iron to low steam and using a Teflon ironing sheet, lightly press seam. Repeat for other side.

Turn the scarf right side out. Attach the fringe to each end of the fur. Cut the fringe 11” long. On each end of the fringe turn under 1/2” and pin across the end of fur. Hand stitch across the top, then again about 1/2” down from the top, making sure not to catch the lining in the stitching. Stitch ends of the fringe in place.

Turn scarf over and pin lining across each end of the fur backs. Carefully hand stitch in place. Your scarf is now finished! Faux Fur Scarf Instructions Page Two
