Teaching Key Words Public Management Organization Analysis Public Administration & Democratic Theory Collaboration & Interagency Surveillance & Society 1 Comparative Public Policy & Administration

Research Interests (Statement) I am a tenured Associate Professor of Public Administration in the School of Public Affairs & Administration at the University of Kansas. I earned a Ph.D. in Political Science at Texas A&M University. I am a public management scholar. I explore the contributions and challenges posed by public management within public organizational settings, across organizational settings, and in broader society. These public management lenses guide my empirical and substantive research across a range of policy arenas, including public health & tobacco, public education, political advocacy of nonprofits, security, accountability in wartime contracting, privatized incarceration, local emergency planning, urban sustainability & the arts, population health & housing destabilization, and most recently critical analysis of state-surveillance and community consent for “smart city” initiatives.

I have made contributions to understanding gendered leadership in public schools, discourses of accountability when managing wartime contracting, identifying critical narratives about what drives interagency collaboration, contemporary effects of political ‘gentlemen’s agreements’ on allocations of funding for homeland security, differences between public and private prison guards, urban sustainability through arts’ networks in cities experiencing economic distress, repositioning social capital as a durable resource for communities planning for emergencies, or that are disrupted by widespread economic crises, like residential foreclosure, which influence health and well-being. I am working on public management and experiences with identity oppressions in the workpace , and also developing a critical theory of state-surveillance relevant to the study and practice of public management.

My research has been competitively funded, published in top journals, in university press book chapters and in government reports. I serve as co-editor and/or editorial board member for well-known research outlets, participate on leadership boards for professional associations, led and served on numerous award committees honoring the contributions of emerging and long-standing scholars, among many other professional activities. I live in Lawrence, KS, with my partner and two young children.
