The past two years have been a wonderful time for our program and for our alumni, several of whom have done very well in national and international competitions and a third who is serving two terms as president of the American Guild of Organists. We are fortunate to have had many great students at KU over the years who have gone on to distinguished careers and are serving our profession each in their own unique way. We celebrate the accomplishments of all our alumni and hope that you will stay in touch and let us know about what you are doing each year. Finally, it has been a time of exciting programs and growth at KU and we look forward to more of the same in the coming year. Read about the many activities that have gone on the past two years and find out what we are planning for this year. A special focus of this year is our celebration of Jim Higdon’s thirty-year teaching career at KU on March 4-5, 2011. PIERRE COCHEREAU: A LEGACY OF IMPROVISATION AT NOTRE DAME DE PARIS By ©2019 Matt Gender Submitted to the graduate degree program in School of Music and the Graduate Faculty of the University of Kansas in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts. ______________________________ Chairperson: Michael Bauer ______________________________ James Higdon ______________________________ Colin Roust ______________________________ David Alan Street ______________________________ Martin Bergee Date Defended: 05/15/19 The Dissertation Committee for Matt Gender certifies that this is the approved version of the following dissertation: PIERRE COCHEREAU: A LEGACY OF IMPROVISATION AT NOTRE DAME DE PARIS _____________________________ Chairperson: Michael Bauer Date Approved: 05/15/19 ii ABSTRACT Pierre Cochereau (1924–84) was the organist of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris and an improviser of organ music in both concert and liturgical settings. He transformed the already established practices of improvising in the church into a modern artform. He was influenced by the teachers with whom he studied, including Marcel Dupré, Maurice Duruflé, and André Fleury. The legacy of modern organ improvisation that he established at Notre Dame in Paris, his synthesis of influences from significant figures in the French organ world, and his development of a personal and highly distinctive style make Cochereau’s recorded improvisations musically significant and worthy of transcription. The transcription of Cochereau’s recorded improvisations is a task that is seldom undertaken by organists or scholars. Thus, the published improvisations that have been transcribed are musically significant in their own way because of their relative scarcity in print and in concert performances. This project seeks to add to this published collection, giving organists another glimpse into the vast career of this colorful organist and composer.

  • Lower Austria: Wine Country
Lower Austria: Wine Country Magnificent wines, enchanting landscapes, and a distinctive wine culture: Lower Austria is one of the most unique and delightful wine regions in the world. The wine is best served along the Lower Austria Wine Road, or at the vineyards. It is said that the Romans brought viticulture to central Europe. However, when the Romans came to Lower Austria in 15 BC, the locals toasted their arrival with wine. According to estimates based on the discovery of grape seeds, wine has been made in Lower Austria for 4000 years – sufficient time to develop a unique wine culture which is known worldwide. For example, the wine cellar-lined streets (Kellergassen) which are almost exclusively found in Lower Austria, where grapes are pressed and wine is stored. Or the taverns, where wine is personally served by the winemakers. Spanning an area of around 27,000 ha, Lower Austria is the largest wine region in Austria, and with its legendary Güner Veltliner and Riesling brews, which are some of the best white wines in the world, ensures the excellent reputation of Austrian wine. Thanks to a number of top wine producers, who expertly draw on a firmly routed wine-growing tradition but also combine this with new ideas and innovative methods, Lower Austria has become of Europe’s most interesting wine regions. Wine can be enjoyed on several occasions. For example in wine cellars, which were dug in the loess many centuries ago, or in modern tasting rooms, or as a sumptuous accompaniment to a gourmet menu, or as part of one of the many festivals celebrated during the wine harvest period in Lower Austria.

  • News Story Summary Alain Robert, a Free Climber Who Has Scaled Some
Session 2: God Judges Suggested Week of Use: December 8, 2019 Core Passage: Numbers 14:5-29 News Story Summary Alain Robert, a free climber who has scaled some of the world’s tallest buildings, is also known as the French Spider Man. His most recent feat was climbing the 502-foot Skyper building in Frankfurt, Germany in late September. He climbed it in around 20 minutes and did so without ropes or other safety equipment. He has also climbed to the top of the 68-floor Cheung Kong Center in Hong Kong, the Empire State Building in New York City, and the Eiffel Tower in Paris, often without safety harnesses. He has been arrested on multiple occasions for his unauthorized climbs. (For more on this story, search the Internet using the term “French Spider Man arrested in Germany”.) Focus Attention Prior to the group time, tape a large sheet of paper to a wall and write at the top, The Riskiest Thing I’ve Ever Done. As the group arrives, distribute markers and direct them to write on the paper the riskiest feat they have ever attempted (rock climbing, bungee jumping, skiing, etc.). Review their answers and lead the group to decide who the biggest risk taker in your group is. Tell the story of Alain Robert, the French Spider Man, who climbed the skyscraper in Germany without safety gear. Ask: How do the risks you’ve taken compare to Alain’s? Why do you think he takes such risks with his life? What makes a risk worth taking? Explain that today’s session focuses on an Old Testament story in which God’s people refused to take a risk—to trust God and His promises—and they suffered the consequences.
