Request for Proposals | Downtown Rochester Jersey Barrier Murals
In collaboration with DMC, Threshold Arts is seeking proposals for original art on the concrete barricades (Jersey barriers) adjacent to outdoor seating areas at downtown Rochester establishments. For this pilot project, Threshold will commission two Rochester area artists to create murals in high traffic locations. Our goal is to expand this opportunity to additional spaces in the near future.
Selected artists will create a cohesive mural using acrylic paint or another lightfast medium on the exterior façade of multiple concrete barricades measuring 32” tall x 10’ wide each (see pilot project site plans below). Upon completion, Threshold Arts staff will seal the murals for longevity. Due to the nature of the project, and the likelihood that barricades will be repositioned or moved to new locations over time, ideal imagery would be appropriate as a standalone composition on a single barricade, or presented in groupings as a cohesive series.
Timeline: August 6 - Deadline for proposals (11:59 pm) August 7 - Proposals reviewed by selection committee (with representatives from Threshold Arts, DMC, the City of Rochester, and Rochester Downtown Alliance) and selected artists notified August 8-13 - Selected artists create murals (specific timing to be coordinated with Threshold Arts for safety) August 14 - Murals sealed by Threshold Arts

Artist stipend: $750, plus $300 materials allowance (base stipend, additional funds available for larger sections)
