PRESIDENT’S CORNER Roberta Newcomer [email protected]

Volunteers are the life-blood of any non-profit organization and Pal-Am is no exception. We do not generate income to hire employees, to provide leadership for our state chapters, or the national organization. Our governing boards are comprised of volun- teers who are willing to donate their time, expertise, skill and energy to keep us moving for- ward…even during a pandemic!. What motivates individuals to sign on to serving on our Boards? John Harder identified five reasons why he benefits from being a Director-at-Large on the National Board: 1. It is an opportunity for me to pay the organization back for years of benefits I received as a member of Pal-Am. 2. It is a chance to get better acquainted with leaders of Pal-Am. 3. I can share skills from my professional career with Pal-Am. 4. I can help shape the direction of Pal-Am for the future. 5. It broadens my understanding of the Pal-Am organization. Colorado Chapter secretary Gina Moore is chair of the conference and has initiated arrangements for the hotel venue. After recent facilities negotiations, in consultation with members of the National Board, the contract has recently been finalized and signed. The conference comes during the 40th anniver- sary year of the Colorado Chapter and this milestone will be celebrated during the conference. Colorado Chapter welcomes input on potential presentation subjects and activities/field trips and future assistance in publicizing the conference from member chapters. This was part of the clippings saved by my mother…From Dear Abby,

―Will you please explain the cousin relationship again? And this time go into the grandnephew, grandniece, and great-aunt and great uncle as well as great-grand-aunt and great-grand-uncle relationships. Thank you.‖

The child of your parent’s brother or sister is your first cousin. However, your first cousin’s child is not your second cousin, but your first cousin once-removed. The child of your first cousin once-removed is your first cousin twice-removed, and his child is your first cousin three times removed.

Your second cousin is your grandparent’s brother’s or (sister’s) grandchild. That second cousin’s child is your second cousin once-removed, his child is your second cousin twice-removed, and so on.

And your third cousin? It’s your great-grandparent’s brother’s (or sister’s) great-grandchild. The third cousin’s child is your third cousin once-removed, his child is your third cousin twice-removed.

The grandchild of your brother or sister is your grandnephew or grandniece.

The sister or brother of your grand-parent is your great-aunt or great-uncle.

The sister or brother of your great-grandparent is your great-grand-aunt or great-grand-uncle.

Palatines to America - German Genealogy Society 174-5 The Palatine Patter Spring 2021 Issue Number 174 INDIANA CHAPTER SPRING MEETING via ZOOM Saturday, April 24, 2021

Featured Speaker: JAMES BEIDLER

PENNSYLVANIA’S LAUNCHING PADS INTO THE MIDWEST Many Midwestern families spent a generation or more in Pennsylvania before migrating throughout the region as it grew in the 1800s. Hear details on major spots they came from in—and routes they took from—the Keystone State. RESEARCHING GERMAN FAMILIES IN PENNSYLVANIA Applying genealogical basics to the peculiarity of searching for the rich records relating to America’s first large ethnic minority population – especially highlighting church registers and immigration documents – as well as the Second Wave Germans who joined them in Pennsylvania. DIGGING PENNSYLVANIA ROOTS FROM YOUR DESKTOP It’s estimated that one in four Americans has ―Keystone State‖ roots. Much Pennsylvania research – from church records to land documents to courthouse filings – can be done remotely. Learn to get much of your gene- alogy done without setting foot in Pennsylvania by using FamilySearch, Ancestry.com, Pennsylvania State Archives and other sites. GO WITH THE FLOW: FINDING ALL THE NEWSPAPERS YOU NEED! There’s been a huge increase in accessibility of newspapers to genealogists due to digitization but keeping up with the many services - ranging from free to paid to publisher-sponsored sites—offering content is difficult. Learn the ebb and flow of finding historical newspapers on- and offline, as well as finding and utilizing other newspaper resources such as abstracts and clipping files, and learn through a couple of case studies.

We are excited to have a full slate of nominations for our board to be voted on at our annual meeting Saturday April 24.

The business meeting will begin at 1:15 PM EDT and end around 1:45 PM EDT. Chapter members who do not wish to register for the spring program can register separately for the business meeting by sending a message to [email protected].

Mark your calendars for our next Collaborative Learning webinar to be held June 26. It will again be free to all Pal-Am members. This will be more of an interactive forum than a presenta- tion - a chance to ask questions and share research tips.

Roger Minert will be the presenter for our fall meeting October 2. He'll be presenting the topics we originally scheduled for our cancelled meeting last spring, which now seems like a life- time ago. We're keeping our eye on the pandemic with hopes that this fall meeting will be held in person, but if not, we'll use Zoom again. We have also started initial planning for spring and fall meetings 2022.

PENNSYLVANIA CHAPTER UPDATE SPRING 2021

Because of ongoing uncertainties related to the pandemic, we have decided to forego plans for any in-person meetings this year. We will conduct our annual membership meeting in the fall via Zoom, exact date to be determined. We will announce that in the next issue of Palatine Patter. We continue to work on making worthwhile resources available to our far-flung membership and to support their pursuit of Pennsylvania German roots. On Saturday, March 27, 2021, we conducted our first online ―mini-seminar,‖ which we are defining as a free session for Chapter members, about an hour in length, presented by a Chapter member with some knowledge or ex- pertise in a relevant area. Our inaugural topic was Exploring Pennsylvania Land Records Online: What you can find while you can’t visit the archives in-person. We announced this presentation to our members on March 8, and within 90 minutes we had filled the 25 slots allocated. We scheduled a second session for the overflow, and that one has also now reached capacity. We received very positive feedback from attendees at this first session, and we are open to suggestions for future mini-seminars. Contact us at [email protected] if you have any ideas that might be of interest. As we gain more experience, we may expand availability.

One of our members is doing a great job of maintaining and updating content on our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/PalAmPennsylvania/). Check it out!

IN MEMORIAM ODELL MILLER

Odell Miller was a long time member and President of the West Virginia Chapter. He was one of the members responsible for its’ vi- ability. He served as National President from 2002 to 2006. His hall- mark was productive and short Board Meetings. He said... ―If you can say it in 30 minutes, you can say it in five.‖

He revitalized the Long Range Planning Committee and set goals for action. Odell delegated the action and monitored and encouraged pro- gress by calling Board Members periodically. He was always person- able but forceful in his dealings and believed as Harry Truman did ―The Buck Stops Here.‖ Odell’s contribution has earned him the Meritorious Service Award.

Palatines to America - German Genealogy Society 174-8 The Palatine Patter Spring 2021 Issue Number 174 PRESIDENT'S CORNER Continued Janet Rupert volunteered to serve as Pennsylvania Chapter President because she felt that her experience as a senior manager in the federal government gave her the skills to lead a group of volunteers.

Chris and Linda Paris, Colorado Chapter president and Historian respectively, said their ―excitement about German research and the really interesting speakers‖ made them say ―yes‖ when they were asked to be on the Colorado Chapter Board.

Ohio Chapter President Lori Poch shared her thoughts about her motivation to serve on a Board: ―I am a ge- nealogist and historian, I am passionate about preserving my history and my family's. Pal-Am has been a great re- source in assisting me with achieving that goal. I want to return the favor by assisting other with their passionate goal of preserving their family history.‖

Most Pal-Am Board members would agree with Webmaster Carol Swinehart who finds being on both the Na- tional and Ohio Chapter Boards as ―enjoyable because you develop friendships that you would not have had.‖

As Mary Hess said about her many years on the National Board, the Ohio Chapter Board and as volunteer manager of the Resource Center, ―I found many friends that I could share information and talk genealogy when my family got tired of hearing me talk about genealogy.‖

So there are many benefits and reasons why folks volunteer to serve on our boards.

Currently National needs help with publicity and public relations. If you have interest in helping with this need, please contact me at [email protected]

Chapter Boards need volunteers with varying skill sets - finance, internet, social media advertising, publicity, program planning, research, creative thinking, leadership, etc. New ideas are important to keep our organizations vibrant and appealing to the membership.

Won’t you step up and volunteer to serve as a Board member for National or your chapter?

We will also purchase an external hard drive and select a web-based service for backup purposes.

During the week of March 23, I made my first visit to Columbus this year. On this trip I filed mail that had been received, created a spreadsheet of books and journals to be disposed of, and updated the spreadsheet of our maps file. I also made a listing of all documents in one file to be utilized as a test of our proposed filing system. The actual scanning process should begin in April.

I also visited several storage locker locations to preview possible future facilities.
