Chapel Hill 2016 Approved by: Reid Barbour David Baker Ruth von Bernuth Mary Floyd Wilson Jessica Wolfe ©2016 Kevin Chovanec ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Kevin Chovanec, “Pan-Protestant Heroism in Early Modern England” (Under the Direction of Reid Barbour) “Pan-Protestant Heroism in Early Modern England” explores transnational religious identifications in England by tracing the written response to and construction of Protestant heroes of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, among them, Willem and Maurits van Oranje, Henry Stuart, Friedrich V, and Gustavus Adolphus. Intervening in the critical conversation on early modern nation-writing and the construction of Englishness, I argue that continental figures like these profoundly shaped English identity in the early modern period. While most historians believe that nationalism and indeed the nation are constructs of a later period, Richard Helgerson, Claire McEachern, and others have posited the sixteenth century as a key moment in the construction of England. Yet this research, and even more recent multinational approaches that consider how foreigners shaped English identity, focuses too heavily on ethnic alterity and neglects the ways in which religious communion provided alternate possible identities. I argue that the transnational lens of pan-Protestant heroism uncovers literary communities and collaboration generally obscured by our nationalized conception of literature. Heroic figures attracted literary responses – in poems lionizing their accomplishments, theorizing their roles in God’s church, and eventually mourning their deaths – responses that spanned across political and linguistic borders. Protestant writers throughout Europe shared the same tropes, types, and literary genres when celebrating these idealized men. Through my research, I question the anachronistic national organization of early modern literature. I consider German, Dutch, and neo-Latin writing on these figures because English writers clearly understand iii themselves to be participating in a transnational project – part of a wider pan-Protestant literary field. Heroes posed a series of questions for English Protestants at home: what was England’s position within the Protestant church? What were English obligations to their often-suffering coreligionists on the continent? How were English and Protestant identity related? Religion has too often been read as a purely centripetal force, binding the English together, and this tendency has effaced strong, alternative collective identities. Instead, identification with pan-Protestantism and its heroes rendered early modern conceptions of foreignness especially fluid. A focus on these heroes therefore helps us uncover specific, alternative forms of early modern religious identity, trace how they changed, and understand the literary communities they cemented. iv For my parents, John and Lynn Chovanec v ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS In reading widely in the elegiac tradition – or really any poetic tradition in the early modern period – one thing becomes particularly conspicuous: repetition. Hardly a mournful or adulatory sentiment can be expressed that has not already been said elsewhere, and likely said with more skill. Acknowledgement sections are the modern equivalent, and there’s always some anxiety that the repetition will dull the real sense of gratefulness. For, as others have said, a project this long could never have been completed without the assistance and generosity of many mentors and friends. I feel incredibly fortunate to have ended up in a department filled with such brilliant scholars and good people. My thanks to the English Department, the Graduate School, and all the students I have had the opportunity to meet and discuss literature with at the University of North Carolina. The Renaissance faculty, especially, have been unfailingly generous with their time, insightful with their suggestions, and dedicated to their students. Megan Matchinske helped shape both my thought and identity as a scholar throughout my time at UNC. Darryl Gless was one of the kindest and most generous scholars I’ve met, and I’m grateful I was able to work with him, though too briefly. David Baker’s thoughtful engagement with my work led (and is still leading) the project in exciting directions. Mary Floyd Wilson has a great gift of being able to locate the kernel of an argument, and I learned an enormous amount about both my own work and how to engage with other scholars from our conversations (and her seminars, some of the best I’ve ever participated in, helped me not lose sight of the period’s drama). Ruth Von Bernuth vi was incredibly accommodating and welcomed me into her German classes. She has always been eager to discuss my work and share her expertise, and has opened up amazing opportunities to meet German scholars and study at German libraries. Jessica Wolfe, who in addition to generously reading my work and encouraging me throughout my graduate career, has taught me more than anyone about the profession: from my first year, she has been willing to meet time and again to discuss not just scholarship, but logistics: grant writing, phone interviews, articles, and all the other minutia of scholarly life. Finally, my director, Reid Barbour, will always be my favorite scholar. His contagious passion for the field and the research, his amazing energy and enthusiasm, and his dedication to and care for his students have greatly facilitated my dissertation and, more importantly, helped me continue to love academia even during difficult stretches. If I can positively impact half as many students as he has, I will consider my career successful. I’d like to also thank my professors at Marquette, who first made English literature so appealing. John Curran, especially, who taught a Shakespeare class in 2004 that transformed me from a Mathematics major, focusing on actuarial statistics, into an English major. This transformation had negative economic consequences, of course, but, I hope, positive moral, social, emotional, and even physical consequences. (One can only spend so many years as an actuary, calculating how likely people are to die, before his or her health suffers.) Most importantly, I’d like to thank my wife. Coming in to graduate school, I had heard that these would be the loneliest and most difficult years of my life; but I was fortunate enough to meet her during my first semester, and they have instead been the happiest. The value of having a perceptive and kind colleague as a partner is inestimable – it improves your work, your teaching, your sanity. She deserves a dedication, but I haven’t yet written anything good enough vii to dedicate to her. Maybe someday. I dedicated the dissertation to my parents, who never once tried to dissuade me from studying the Humanities, and have provided constant support, encouragement, and love. Anyone who begins a dissertation now must be confronted with the overwhelming (and at times intimidating) deluge of scholarship already in place. Scarcely a topic, scarcely a text, has not yet been admirably and learnedly investigated. It feels like arrogance to imagine I have anything to add. And yet, conversations go on, and what luck to find so many brilliant people interested in the same things. It’s a great privilege to be able to discuss literature, to discuss religion and history, to talk about interesting or odd facets of the past. This is the case of Michael Du Val’s The Spanish-English Rose (1622), a political tract elaborated within court circles to promote the Anglo-Spanish alliance. This article analyzes its role in producing an alternative to the religious and imperial discourse inherited from the Elizabethan age. It also considers the intertextual relations between Du Val’s tract and other contemporary works in order to determine its part within the discursive network of the Anglican faith and political absolutism.

The influence Anne Boleyn had on English society in the sixteenth century was summed up by historian Charles Beem, “our biggest enemy is terrorism…theirs was the Reformation. You can't overestimate how traumatic the changes in the church would have been. You might get close if you imagined that Monica Lewinsky had been a radical Islamist and Bill Clinton married her and made everyone convert.”1 Anne Boleyn was not the typical English Rose;2 she had an intense tempting quality that greatly attracted King Henry VIII. She was said to possess a delicate and attractive appearance, a vivacious personality, and exotic features since she was not brought up in the English court but rather the French to serve Queen Claude of France. To Henry, Anne symbolized the sophistication and charm of the French court he so earnestly desired.3 Anne Boleyn was the second wife of Henry VIII after his divorce from Katherine, a divorce that would revolutionize England as the country broke free from the Catholic Church and established the Church of England. Before King Henry VIII married Katherine of Aragon, Katherine was wedded to his elder brother Arthur in 1501. A year after their marriage, Arthur died; but the cause of death remains unknown.

    hen m~ntion is ma?e of the national Synod of Dordrecht, the tendency for W many 1s to associate that name with the Reformed Churches in the Netherlands during the early 17th century. To do so is certainly not incorrect, but it should be borne in mind that that Synod was in certain respects unique so far as the assemblies of Reformed churches are concerned. Unlike any of the other great Reformed assemblies, it gathered together representatives of virtually all of the Reformed churches in Europe. In that respect it stands alone and deserves a pecu­ liar place in the history of the Reformed churches. The divines who met at Dordt on the 13th November 1618 constituted a remark­ able array of talent and background. The ranks of those who attended at Dort included fifty-six ministers and ruling elders from the Dutch churches, five Professors of Theology, and twenty-six foreign divines, as well as eighteen political commissioners who were not members of the Synod but who were to supervise the proceedings and report to the States-General. The foreign divines included repre­ sentatives from the Reformed churches of Great Britain, the Palatinate, Hessia, Switzerland, Wetteravia, Geneva, Bremen, and Emden. Delegates from France were also invited, but were prevented from. attending by their king. Consequently, this Synod was unlike any other within the Reformed church world. As a Synod, it has enjoyed high praise. Richard Baxter places this Synod on the same footing as the Westminster Assembly of Divines.     THE SYNOD OF DORT Many Reformed Churches around the world commemorate the Great Protestant Reformation which begun in Germany on October 31st 1517. On that providential day, Martin Luther nailed his famed 95 Theses on the door of the castle church of Wittenberg. In no time, without Luther's knowledge, this paper was copied, and reproduced in great numbers with the recently invented printing machine. It was then distributed throughout Europe. This paper was to be used by our Sovereign Lord to ignite the Reformation which saw the release of the true Church of Christ from the yoke and bondage of Rome. Almost five hundred years have gone by since then. Today, there are countless technically Protestant churches (i.e. can trace back to the Reformation in terms of historical links) around the world. But there are few which still remember the rich heritage of the Reformers. In fact, a great number of churches which claim to be Protestant have, in fact, gone back to Rome by way of doctrine and practice, and some even make it their business to oppose the Reformers and their heirs. I am convinced that one of the chief reasons for this state of affair in the Protestant Church is a contemptuous attitude towards past creeds and confessions and the historical battles against heresies. When, for example, there are fundamentalistic defenders of the faith teaching in Bible Colleges, who have not so much as heard of the Canons of Dort or the Synod of Dort, but would lash out at hyper-Calvinism, then you know that something is seriously wrong within the camp.

This Elizabethanism attempted to reconcile increasingly hostile conflicts between Catholics and Protestants, court and country, and elite and commoners. Remarkably, as I show by examining several Caroline texts in which Elizabethan ghosts appear, Caroline authors often resurrect long-dead Elizabethan figures to articulate not only Puritan views but also Arminian and Catholic ones. This tendency to complicate associations between the Elizabethan era and militant Protestantism also appears in Caroline plays by Thomas Heywood, Philip Massinger, and William Sampson that figure Queen Elizabeth as both ideally Protestant and dangerously ambiguous. Furthermore, Caroline Elizabethanism included reprintings and adaptations of Elizabethan literature that reshape the ideological significance of the Elizabethan era. The 1630s quarto editions of Shakespeare’s Elizabethan comedies The Merry Wives of Windsor, The Taming of the Shrew, and Love’s Labour’s Lost represent the Elizabethan era as the source of a native English wit that bridges social divides and negotiates the ii roles of powerful women (a renewed concern as Queen Henrietta Maria became more conspicuous at court).

  • The History of Slavery Covers Slave Systems in Historical Perspective In
    The history of slavery covers slave systems in historical perspective in which one human being is legally the property of another, can be bought or sold, is not allowed to escape and must work for the owner without any choice involved. As Drescher (2009) argues, "The most crucial and frequently utilized aspect of the condition is a communally recognized right by some individuals to possess, buy, sell, discipline, transport, liberate, or otherwise dispose of the bodies and behavior of other individuals."[1] An integral element is that children of a slave mother automatically become slaves.[2] It does not include historical forced labor by prisoners, labor camps, or other forms of unfree labor in which laborers are not considered property. Slavery can be traced back to the earliest records, such as the Code of Hammurabi (c. 1760 BC), which refers to it as an established institution.[3] Slavery is rare among hunter-gatherer populations as slavery depends on a system of social stratification. Slavery typically also requires a shortage of labor and a surplus of land to be viable.[4] David P. Forsythe wrote: "The fact remained that at the beginning of the nineteenth century an estimated three-quarters of all people alive were trapped in bondage against their will either in some form of slavery or serfdom."[5] Slavery is no longer legal anywhere in the world.[6] Mauritania abolished it in law in 1981[7] and was the last country to do so – see Abolition of slavery timeline. However, the number of slaves today is higher than at any point in history,[8]
