2013-2014 ANNUAL REPORT | 2 2 Our Schools PRE-K TO 8TH GRADE IN NYC

Public Prep is a nonprofit organization that develops high-quality Universal Pre-Kindergarten and single-sex elementary and middle public schools that pursue excellence through continuous learning and evidence-based instruction. Our model is designed to empower each student to build strong character, demonstrate critical thinking, possess a core body of knowledge and be on a predictive path to earn a degree from a four-year university.

Building off of our flagship school, Girls Prep Lower East Side – which launched as ’s first and only all-girls charter school in 2005, Public Prep schools offer unique, high-quality public school options for our student and family populations. In particular, by developing single-sex environments, we provide public options previously unavailable to the communities we serve. Our all-girls and all- boys schools remove gender bias and foster nurturing, safe environments which build solidarity and community amongst our students.

We believe that by starting early, in PreK or Kindergarten, students will build the robust vocabulary, learning habits, and foundation of knowledge required for success in later grades and ultimately college completion.

12 CookShop for Families

The Food Bank For New York City’s “CookShop for Families” offers six family workshops at Girls Prep Bronx Elementary School, wherein they focus on healthy and affordable food choices. Participants work through a recipe during each workshop, while discussing a topic such as reading food labels, meal planning, portion size, and physical activity. At the end of each workshop, the Food Bank provides fresh and affordable groceries to the participants.

“I have been facilitating ‘CookShop for Families’ in our school for the past 5 years. CookShop has been such an amazing and rewarding experience for me! Being able to help families learn about healthy, easy and affordable meals is fascinating. There is such a joy in cooking together, trying new recipes, and learning about our families in a completely different environment. Every year there is always something new and exciting that comes out in our meetings. I love to see the pictures of families cooking with their kids, listen to their cooking experiences at home, and taste the very proud meals they make every time there is a potluck event in the school.” evelyn marcano, family coordinator girls prep bronx elementary school

One of the key goals of our public charter schools is that they self-sustain on public financing before they reach capacity as K-8 schools serving 650 students or more. Thanks to the advocacy efforts of our families in 2013-2014, our schools benefited from a $250 increase per child in state funding during the 2014-2015 school year. In 2015-2016, our schools will benefit from a $350 increase from 2013-2014 allocations. We are proud to report that both Girls Prep Lower East Side and Girls Prep Bronx are self-sustaining on public funds. Thanks to generous gifts from the Louis Calder Foundation, the Walton Family Foundation, our board members, and others, Boys Prep has raised $1M of the $1.5M initial investment required before it reaches self-sustainability and no longer requires philanthropy.

✈ Summer Study Program

For the first time, the Public Prep academic team awarded two full stipends and two partial stipends to support summer learning by our staff. Experiences included a trip to Guatemala to study social justice, a trip to Ecuador to study folk music, diversity seminar facilitation training through SEED, and participation in the Singapore Mathematics National Conference. Staff members brought back knowledge gained through these experiences to support student learning and enhance professional development experiences for colleagues.
