At the Paley Center, it’s been more than just buzz. The past year has been one of exciting evolution for us, beginning with our name change from The Museum of Television & Radio in June 2007. When our educators ask a class of eighth graders how they watch their favorite shows, most students say on their mobile phones or laptops. Media is more pervasive than ever before, and its definition expands way beyond television and radio to include a rising variety of delivery platforms. As The Paley Center for Media, we’re evolving with this landscape, exploring media’s immense and growing significance within our culture, society, and history. And as our longtime friends certainly know, the word “museum” has never fully captured who we are and what we do. We have always been media’s public square, the place for conversation with media’s brightest minds and most creative talents, using media as a lens through which we gain understanding of the world around us. Increasingly, we’re also the leading forum for the industry to debate its biggest challenges and discover its greatest opportunities. Our new name expresses our role in the twenty-first century, while paying tribute to our founder, William S. Paley, a true industry pioneer. In 2007, we focused our lens on the power of media to take us to other corners of the globe and shed light on little- understood—or misunderstood—cultures. Our spring subscription series was devoted to insight into the people, the events, and the current conflicts of the Middle East. Our discussions included Women, the Media, and the Middle East moderated by Barbara Walters; Covering the World: Al Jazeera; and The War of Information in the Middle East, among others. The accompanying Window to the Middle East media exhibit gave visitors a rare opportunity to observe Middle Eastern beliefs, attitudes, values, and preoccupations by showcasing unfiltered news and entertainment programming from the region. This unique exhibit featured programming—not readily available in the U.S.—from more than a dozen countries. Important new partnerships are bringing our public events to more people, in more places. Yahoo! TV, Comcast’s Fancast.com, iTunes, RealNetworks, and Audible.com are a few of the content providers that are featuring video of popular Paley fare, such as our conversations with the creative teams behind The Office, Lost, American Idol, The Wire, and Gossip Girl. Paley video has been watched over two million times since our first partnerships began. However, with a wide selection of clips from past events, paleycenter.org is the best place to relive favorite moments of recent discussions or to see what you’ve been missing! While you’re on our website, check out the section devoted to our multiyear initiative, She Made It: Women Creating Television and Radio. You will find detailed bios, curatorial essays, and clips relating to our 150 honorees—some of the most remarkable women writers, directors, producers, journalists, sportscasters, and executives in media—as well as information on the initiative’s next phase, AllThingsMedia, the first-ever venture capital forum for women entrepreneurs in the media space. Our ever-expanding collection—which is now inclusive of all electronic media—provides the foundation for our education programs, which augment in-class curriculum and hone media literacy skills. In 2007 our K-12 class program served approximately twenty thousand students and educators, and we were proud to host, once again, the Urban Visionaries Youth Film Festival, creating a forum for young media makers to present their films in front of a packed theater of their peers. With over three hundred members, our Media Council convenes top executives across all sectors of media to explore the most critical issues facing the industry. Among the almost-forty events in 2007, we welcomed as speakers Dick Parsons of Time Warner, Blair Westlake of Microsoft, Cathie Black of Hearst, Sean McManus of CBS, and Anne Sweeney of Disney. Our International Council, comprised of leading media executives from around the world, met at the very epicenter of convergence of traditional and emerging
