Light Shadows: Loose Adaptations of Gothic Literature in American TV Series o... 1 Light Shadows: Loose Adaptations of Gothic Literature in American TV Series of the 1960s and early 1970s Dennis Tredy 1 In the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, in a somewhat failed attempt to wrestle some high ratings away from the network leader CBS, ABC would produce a spate of supernatural sitcoms, soap operas and investigative dramas, adapting and borrowing heavily from major works of Gothic literature of the nineteenth and early twentieth century. The trend began in 1964, when ABC produced the sitcom The Addams Family (1964-66), based on works of cartoonist Charles Addams, and CBS countered with its own The Munsters (CBS, 1964-66) –both satirical inversions of the American ideal sitcom family in which various monsters and freaks from Gothic literature and classic horror films form a family of misfits that somehow thrive in middle-class, suburban America. -

Thompson 2006 Edited By Robyn Goforth (2009), Tyler Eastman (2012) PREFACE The American Heritage Center holdings include a wealth of material on women's issues as well as numerous collections from women who gained prominence in national and regional affairs. The AHC, part of the University of Wyoming (the only university in the "Equality State") continues a long tradition of collecting significant materials in these areas. The first great collector of materials at the University, Dr. Grace Raymond Hebard, was herself an important figure in the national suffrage movement, as materials in her collection indicate. Hebard's successors continued such accessions, even at times when many other repositories were focusing their attentions on "the great men." For instance, they collected diaries of Oregon Trail travelers and accounts of life when Wyoming was even more of a frontier than it is today. Another woman, Lola Homsher, was the first formally designated University archivist and her efforts to gain materials from and about women accelerated during the service of Dean Krakel, Dr. Gene Gressley, and present director Dr. Michael Devine. As a result of this work, the AHC collections now contain the papers of pioneering women in the fields of journalism, film, environmental activism, literature, and politics, among other endeavors. -

I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. ........................................ 2 Abstract The thesis offers a revised institutional history of US cable network Home Box Office that expands on its under-examined identity as a monthly subscriber service from 1972 to 1994. This is used to better explain extensive discussions of HBO‟s rebranding from 1995 to 2007 around high-quality original content and experimentation with new media platforms. The first half of the thesis particularly expands on HBO‟s origins and early identity as part of publisher Time Inc. from 1972 to 1988, before examining how this affected the network‟s programming strategies as part of global conglomerate Time Warner from 1989 to 1994. Within this, evidence of ongoing processes for aggregating subscribers, or packaging multiple entertainment attractions around stable production cycles, are identified as defining HBO‟s promotion of general monthly value over rivals. Arguing that these specific exhibition and production strategies are glossed over in existing HBO scholarship as a result of an over-valuing of post-1995 examples of „quality‟ television, their ongoing importance to the network‟s contemporary management of its brand across media platforms is mapped over distinctions from rivals to 2007. -

GEOLOGY An occasional newsletter for alumni and friends. October 2002 at SMU Survey of graduates shows: Geology is always a good bet! ur summer alumni survey showed the importance of career opportunities in oil and gas exploration to Oour graduates while illustrating the success of our graduates who choose to pursue careers in research and educa- tion. After receiving several questions about the job market in geology, we sent out approximately 600 questionnaires using our active mailing list to gather data on career paths of our alumni. The responses came in over the summer from alumni from every de- cade starting with the 1930’s. The number of responses from each decade mimicked the total number of degrees granted in that de- cade; the total responses exceeded 25%. While SMU was founded in 1911, the first earth science de- gree was granted in 1920. The master’s degree program was started after World War II and the Ph.D. program granted its first degree in 1967 (see page 3). The registrar tells us that 735 people have earned degrees in earth science at SMU. This averages out to roughly 9 degree holders per year. The maximum number of degrees granted (37) occurred with the class 1949, probably the result of the GI bill and the attractiveness of geology in Texas. As a group of Texas graduates, it is not surprising that the participation rate has been and continues to be high in the petro- leum industry. To the present, it appears to be highest among holders of the bachelor of arts degree, decreasing to about 10% at Proportion of Responses/Degrees the Ph.D. -

HELL IS A GAME SHOW: AN ARTISTIC INTERPRETATION OF THE AFTERLIFE ______________________________ A Thesis Presented to The Honors Tutorial College Ohio University _____________________________ In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for Graduation from the Honors Tutorial College with the degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film _____________________________ by Zachary Stoner May 2018 Stoner 1 “Hell is other people,” shouts Joseph Garcin in Jean-Paul Sartre’s 1944 play Huis Clos (No Exit). It was this sentiment that summarizes the entire play: man can never escape the judgment of others and in turn is always in the hell of his own self-judgment. It is this quote, in its various forms and parodies, that would come back to haunt me in ironic ways. But it was also this play that took me down the path that would eventually lead me to the creation of my film: Hell is a Game Show. This project starts before Sartre, with my junior year film Near Sighted: The Usually Alone Interview - specifically with a supporting actress by the name of Evie Weir. Her acting was smart and funny, a natural with the kind of dark comedy that I had become so fond of writing. There’s an old Hollywood expression that goes “directing is ninety percent casting,” and I planned to take that a step further and write my thesis film around a talented actress that had a great knowledge of the craft. I had just finished watching two dark comedies: Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005) and Seven Psychopaths (2012). Both feature comedy that relies heavily on horrible murder or torture. -
