No industry understands this better than the media. In 2012, while technological innovations continued to drive media in new directions—challenging companies to be more open, dynamic, and adaptable—it was their communities who continued to dictate trends in all areas, from content to commerce. The Paley Center has interpreted this challenge as a call for us to engage—reimagining our role as a curator, connector, and convener for the public and media industry. We delivered a dynamic slate of value-adding programs that focused on cultivating knowledge-sharing and lively discussion, as well as innovative cross-genre and cross-sector collaborations. In each, we explored the duality of media as a tool to engage or isolate, inform or conceal, empower or silence—challenging all of us to apply it as a force for positive change. In 2012, our community expanded as more people joined us on different channels and platforms: two million TV viewers; ten million views of the Paley Center’s YouTube channel; 42,000 social media followers; 960,000 visitors to our website; and 100,000 visitors onsite in New York and Los Angeles. Whether it’s an intimate gathering in our theater, a network of communities gathering for a livestream, or an individual viewing on-demand, these live and virtual communities connect around our content, using social media to add their voices to the conversation and amplify it in new and exciting ways. At the Paley Center, we celebrate all media genres. The PALEYFEST stage in Los Angeles welcomed the casts of acclaimed shows about American life today—and yesterday—from Mad Men to Modern Family. PALEYDOCFEST in New York explored documentary film’s role in challenging public perception of the political process with Let Fury Have the Hour and Documenting Power: 25 Years of Political Films on POV. Our Public Programs featured the irreverent wit of Denis Leary, the spellbinding voice of Renée Fleming, the elegant poise of Christopher Plummer, the boundless humor of Whoopi Goldberg, and the unflinching bravery ofChristiane Amanpour. Each offered a distinctive interpretation of life, while underscoring the versatility of media. The 2012 TEDxWomen conference reset the boundaries of our community—15,000 people in 153 global cities gathered for the event livestream from Washington, DC. The fifty-five speakers were as diverse as those watching—from Treasurer of the United States Rosie Rios to multimedia artist Sue Austin—but their voices reinforced one message: media gives us the power to connect and catalyze change. Closer to home, our Education Program served a local community of digital natives with a historic grounding from the Paley Collection. Our Industry Programs crisscrossed the map—both geographically and topically—as they explored the changing forms and platforms for news and information. IC2012 took us across the Atlantic to Madrid for an exploration of News at the Speed of Life, and back to New York for Innovation Without Borders. Our Media Council, in partnership with the Knight Foundation, took our Next Big Thing series on the road to Chicago and Los Angeles. We explored ethics with The Poynter Digital Journalism Ethics Symposium; and we looked at Protecting Content and Promoting Innovation in a Digital World: A Post-SOPA/PIPA Conversation with Richard Cotton and Fred Wilson. Every community has an anchor and role model. Frank Bennack has enduringly served in that capacity for the Paley Center. He has led us through every challenge and towards every opportunity, in an unparalleled commitment to this institution and its mission. We deeply appreciate his wise leadership and generous service as our Chairman. We thank the Board of Trustees for their expert guidance, advocacy, and support. It enables us to build new forms of community for all our members and supporters, both local and global, and challenges us to stay nimble, stay relevant, and program innovatively throughout 2013. Pat Mitchell President & CEO 5 About The Paley Center for Media The Paley Center for Media is the premier institution dedicated to advancing the understanding of media— its artistic value, social impact, business dynamics, and historical importance—for the public and media professionals.
