Goldgelbes Licht liegt über der Marine Corps Air Station in Miramar, Kalifornien, nur wenige Meilen vom Pazifik entfernt, und eine warme Brise zaust die Blätter der Palmen, aber die freundliche Umgebung täuscht. Hier lässt die Navy ihre Mari- neflieger ausbilden, damit sie lernen, aus abstürzenden Flug- zeugen und Hubschraubern zu entkommen. Wer als Pilot ir- gendwo in der Nähe des Wassers fliegt – und das betrifft fast jeden –, kommt zum Aviation Survival Training Center, um dort zu lernen, wie man ein »Missgeschick« überlebt, der Eu- phemismus für einen Unfall oder Schlimmeres. In meiner Gruppe sind vier Männer und eine Frau. Gleich bei der Begrü- ßung wird uns erklärt, dass unser Training mit einem »hohen Risiko« verbunden ist. Einer der Dozenten gibt uns ein offizi- elles Formular der Regierung, das wir unterschreiben müssen. Damit werden alle eventuellen Regressforderungen an die Ver- einigten Staaten ausgeschlossen. Die Navy nimmt junge Männer und Frauen auf, die gerade erst die Highschool verlassen haben, und bringt ihnen bei, ge- fährliche Missionen in einer extrem feindlichen Umgebung zu überleben. Sie bereitet unerfahrene junge Leute darauf vor, Unvorstellbares zu ertragen. Sie macht aus ihnen Krieger und Überlebende. Deshalb beginnen meine Recherchen hier hin- ter Stacheldraht und Wachposten, wo Zivilisten normalerweise 9 Prolog keinen Zutritt haben. Ich will den Stress des Überlebenstrai- nings selbst erfahren und mich in die militärischen Sitten und Gebräuche des Überlebens hineinversetzen. Vor allem aber will ich die Geheimnisse der Überlebenden lüften. Die ersten acht Stunden des Programms spielen sich in einem Klassenzimmer ab, wo engagierte, hochkonzentrierte Experten uns mit einem Schnellfeuer von Informationen über jede nur erdenkliche lebensbedrohliche Situation bombardie- ren. Sie machen uns mit verschiedenen Arten von Sauerstoff- mangel vertraut und erklären uns, wie man die Symptome er- kennt. Sie unterrichten uns in sensorischer Physiologie, und wir erfahren, wie unsere Sinne uns oft täuschen und zu töd- lichen Fehlern verleiten. Wir lernen, wie wichtig die situati- onsbezogene Aufmerksamkeit ist – sie nennen sie kurz S/A –, womit sie meinen, dass man sich in jedem Augenblick be- wusst sein muss, was in seinem Umfeld vorgeht, sodass man Gefahren vorhersehen kann. Außerdem erhalten wir verschie- dene praktische Anleitungen. Egal, wie durstig wir sind, nie sollen wir Urin trinken und erst recht kein Meerwasser.* Und schließlich erklären sie uns mit Nachdruck, dass die innere Einstellung der Schlüssel zum Überleben ist. »Wenn ihr den Lebenswillen verliert«, sagt ein stämmiger Dozent, »dann habt ihr beste Aussichten, es nicht zu schaffen.« Am späten Nach- mittag sind wir mit der Theorie fertig. Jetzt ist es Zeit für das, wozu wir eigentlich hergekommen sind: das Tunken. * In einer britischen Studie über 163 »Insassen von Rettungsbooten« starben 38,8 Prozent der Leute, die Meerwasser tranken, aber nur 3,3 Prozent derjenigen, die das nicht taten. Meerwasser enthält 3 Prozent gelöstes Salz, und wenn man es trinkt, »verschlimmert es die Austrocknung« und »beschleunigt den Tod«. Die meisten Überlebensexperten raten auch davon ab, Urin zu trinken, weil er Salze und Aus- scheidungsprodukte enthält, die einen krank machen können. 10 Vorbereitung auf den Aufprall Ich stehe in meiner Badehose am Pool, ziehe den Bauch ein und werfe einen prüfenden Blick auf den Rest der Gruppe. Sie sind alle grässlich schlank und fit. Gleich neben mir steht ein schmissiger junger Mann, der von seinem Kommandeur als »Sailor of the Quarter« ausgezeichnet wurde. Neben ihm: ein zackiger, drahtiger befehlshabender Offizier eines Zerstörers. Ich schätze, dass meine Chancen nicht besonders gut sind. Die erste Prüfung (»Kannst du schwimmen?«) sieht so aus: Man wird in die komplette Fliegerausrüstung gesteckt – Flie- geranzug, Stiefel mit stahlverstärkten Spitzen, Anti-g-Hosen, Fallschirm, Piloten-Überlebensweste, Rettungsweste und Handschuhe. Dann werfen sie einen in den Pool, und man muss Wasser treten, bis das Herz fast explodiert. Ohne Pause wird man anschließend zu etwas gezwungen, was sich »Drownproofing« nennt (Schutz vor Ertrinken), eine irritie- rende Technik, bei der man wie ein Toter auf dem Wasser treibt, um Energie zu sparen und wieder zu Atem zu kommen. Viele Teilnehmer können sich nicht über Wasser halten, und schon sind sie bei der Prüfung durchgefallen. Hat man diesen Teil geschafft, kommt eine Art extremes »Spaßbad«. Mit Flaschenzügen und Drähten wird man kreuz und quer durch einen großen Pool gezerrt, um einen Fall- schirm zu simulieren, der einen über den Ozean schleift. Man wird an einem Kabel hochgezogen, und gleichzeitig prasseln Unmengen Wasser aus den stärksten Brauseköpfen herunter, um die Auswirkungen der Rotorblätter eines Rettungshub- schraubers zu simulieren. Dann schließlich das große Finale: Man wird in einem Sitz angegurtet und in den Pool geworfen; kopfüber sinkt man auf den Grund und soll sich nun aus eige- ner Kraft befreien. 11 Prolog Ich bin 1,95 Meter groß, und so besteht die erste Schwierig- keit darin, eine passende Fliegerausrüstung zu finden. Als ich am Ende eingekleidet bin, komplett mit einem Helm der Größe XL, muss ich zwangsläufig an den erfolglosen Präsi- dentschaftskandidaten Michael Dukakis denken, der 1988 mit seinem albernen Helm auf einem M1A1-Panzer so lächerlich aussah. Ich hoffe einfach, dass ich unsichtbar bin, während ich mit mehr als 11 Kilogramm Ausrüstung am Körper in das 30 Grad warme Wasser springe. Wir befinden uns am flachen Ende des Pools, und weil meine Füße in Schuhen der Größe 13 stecken, ziehen sie mich nach unten wie Zementblöcke. Ich versuche herauszufinden, wie ich mich am effizientesten be- wegen kann, von schwimmen ganz zu schweigen. Klar ist: Je mehr Mühe ich mir gebe, desto ineffizienter bin ich. Ich ver- suche es mit improvisierten Mini-Schwimmzügen – einer Art modifiziertem Hundeschwimmen –, und das scheint ziemlich gut zu funktionieren. Ich schaue mir den Rest der Gruppe an, sehe die anderen entspannt im Pool herumpaddeln und gerate in einen Wettbewerbsrausch. Ich bin ein wenig überdreht, meine Atmung ist flach, und ich bin eindeutig nervös. Ich will auf keinen Fall versagen. Genau dieses Gefühl wollen sie einem vermitteln. Solange man nicht im Wasser ist und ver- sucht, mit seiner gesamten Ausrüstung oben zu bleiben, kann man sich nicht einmal ansatzweise vorstellen, wie es ist, wenn man auf dem offenen Ozean um sein Leben kämpft. In einer sehr sicheren und kontrollierten Umgebung signalisiert die- ses Konkurrenzgefühl das erste Aufflackern des Überlebens- instinkts: Die chemischen Botenstoffe des Gehirns fließen, die Gedanken konzentrieren sich auf einen Plan. Eine Trillerpfeife erklingt, und nun sollen wir den knapp 12 Vorbereitung auf den Aufprall 23 Meter langen Pool durchschwimmen. Ich gebe alles und konzentriere mich auf meine improvisierten Mini-Schwimm- züge. Ich bin als Erster am Ziel, aber ich habe zu viel

Research shows that we can identify students who are likely to drop out as early as middle school by tracking early warning indicators of poor attendance, behavior issues and course failure in math and English. City Year is harnessing the energy and idealism of young adults in national service and placing them in these high-need schools to help students stay on track – and get back on track – to graduation and life success. This year, City Year united more than 1,500 diverse young leaders in full-time service to help turn around our lowest performing schools, close the education achievement gap and help students succeed. City Year deploys our AmeriCorps members into high-poverty schools, serving as "near-peer" role models and performance coaches, helping students develop socio-emotionally and achieve academically. Corps members work with at-risk students from 7:30 a.m. until the last student leaves the after-school program at dusk. We are seeing promising results: sharp increases in student attendance, progress in behavior and improved course performance in math and English. In 2010, 90% of all students tutored by City Year improved raw literacy scores, and the number of students with less than 90% attendance was cut in half as a result of City Year’s attendance support activities.

As was reported in this magazine last spring, we have staked out a goal to become an exceptional regional public comprehensive university. In the list of those developments, first come our students, of course. Since last March when our Jazz Band Ensemble won the Villanova Jazz Band Festival, our students have repeatedly demonstrated the outstanding quality of the CCSU educational experience: as you will read in this issue, their research and preparation has enabled them to place at the top in academic competitions against students from distinguished institutions of higher learning. And in athletics, always a part of the collegiate experience, our men’s cross-country team won both the Northeast Conference Championship and the New England Championship, where they outpaced teams from perennial powerhouses in the sport. "We received a record number of entries this year for the News and Documentary Emmy Awards,” said Price. “Entries totaled 1654, up from last year’s 1450.” The awards recognize outstanding achievement by individuals and programs broadcast during the 2001 calendar year. “These entries and nominations reflect the extraordinary year of television news coverage that 2001 proved to be,” said Bill Small, Vice Chairman for News and Documentaries. “This year’s awards will pay tribute to the role of broadcast journalists in covering 9/11 and the war in Afghanistan, among the most significant news stories in modern history. It will also reflect that same excellence in the coverage of news in other key areas affecting our culture including the AIDS crisis as a world health problem and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.” This year, the presentation of the News and Documentary Emmy Awards will be part of a series of events titled “9/11 to 9/11: A Tribute to News Professionals.” The tribute will begin on Monday, September 9, at the Essex House with a noontime lunch for newsmakers and leading television journalists and executives. Later that day, a symposium attended by journalists, television executives, newsmakers and students will be held at Fordham University to study the role of television in covering the current world crisis.

The event featured Brandeis’ Professor Anita Hill. The results of the combined team efforts were evident and applauded by all. We received a lovely thank you note from Savannah Pearlman, the Brandeis Student Ambassador for our region, whom we hosted at the event. Savannah hopes to visit our Board in April when on Spring break. Thus far, we have produced four major events: the Study Group Brunch for Leaders and Coordinators; the successful Fall Luncheon: Spotlight on Hollywood; University on Wheels in partnership with the Los Angeles Chapter; and the upcoming Words, Wit & Wisdom: Books & Authors on April 28th.
