  • Social Media and the Unyielding Flow of Cable News in the Age of Trump
Social Media and the Unyielding Flow of Cable News in the Age of Trump Deborah L. Jaramillo, Boston University An early observation about television’s daily architecture warrants a reevaluation as new technologies and shifting viewing patterns call into question its relevance. For all the justified criticism, adaptation, and elaboration of Williams’ earliest description of flow, a return to the general concept helps us decode what is happening on cable news in the Trump era. The new routine on cable news generally revels in the sort of disruption instigated by political turmoil, scandal, a renewed investment in investigative reporting, and the decision of cable news producers to include and fixate on Trump’s Twitter feed. Information flow, Twitter flow, and programming flow live together now, sometimes uncomfortably. The key to flow on MSNBC, in particular, is the way that this new living arrangement moves not toward denouement and relaxation at the end of the programming day as broadcast flow does. The blow of each revelation snowballs so that flow is not just a sequence of possibly connected stories from dawn through midnight. I argue that the crux of flow on MSNBC is actually about memory and magnitude—not the resolution of but the accumulation of politically charged information, crises, and catastrophes across the day and, as we are seeing, across all days. Cable news has created a space where continuity, repetition, anticipation, and disruption commingle; the resulting atmosphere is ripe for continuous, live political catastrophe. Cable news relies on the relentless flow of time to frame its usefulness for viewers.

  • CBS News Archives, Our Efforts in Preservation and End with Some Suggestions Addressing the Mission of This Panel
DOUG MCKINNEY, DIRECTOR, CBS-NEWS ARCHIVES FOR ORAL PRESENTATION TO LIBRARY OF CONGRESS STUDY RE TV . PRESERVATION (3/19/96): It is with a combination of some relief and awe that we come before this panel, the nature of which has been imagined as a hoped-for eventuality, now gladly arrived. While many eloquent voices are here to cry, we no longer face such a wilderness. The preservation of entertainment programming as it applies to CBS will be addressed by other counterparts at the Los Angeles hearing. Today, in tandem with Mr. DeCesare, I will focus my remarks on the nature of CBS News Archives, our efforts in preservation and end with some suggestions addressing the mission of this panel. CBS has the largest collection of its kind among the major networks, having kept and maintained more material generally in addition to having started earlier. Dating principally from 1950 to the present, CBS News Archives has well over a million videotapes, including original field cassettes as well as program broadcasts, and several million feet of hard news film, as well as 80,000 containers of film and tape masters, . prints, program negatives and outtake material from long-form documentaries and news magazine programs. All materials are stored in Manhattan on approximabely 60,000 square feet of climate-controlled space. (All nitrate film was transferred to safety stock some years ago.) In addition,. copies of the CBS Evening News from the mid-'70s to present, and of many other CBS News broadcasts including special and documentary programs are on deposit at the National Archives via Library of Congress copyright registration.

  • Wanting, Not Waiting
WINNERSdateline OF THE OVERSEAS PRESS CLUB AWARDS 2011 Wanting, Not Waiting 2012 Another Year of Uprisings SPECIAL EDITION dateline 2012 1 letter from the president ne year ago, at our last OPC Awards gala, paying tribute to two of our most courageous fallen heroes, I hardly imagined that I would be standing in the same position again with the identical burden. While last year, we faced the sad task of recognizing the lives and careers of two Oincomparable photographers, Tim Hetherington and Chris Hondros, this year our attention turns to two writers — The New York Times’ Anthony Shadid and Marie Colvin of The Sunday Times of London. While our focus then was on the horrors of Gadhafi’s Libya, it is now the Syria of Bashar al- Assad. All four of these giants of our profession gave their lives in the service of an ideal and a mission that we consider so vital to our way of life — a full, complete and objective understanding of a world that is so all too often contemptuous or ignorant of these values. Theirs are the same talents and accomplishments to which we pay tribute in each of our awards tonight — and that the Overseas Press Club represents every day throughout the year. For our mission, like theirs, does not stop as we file from this room. The OPC has moved resolutely into the digital age but our winners and their skills remain grounded in the most fundamental tenets expressed through words and pictures — unwavering objectivity, unceasing curiosity, vivid story- telling, thought-provoking commentary.

Through pioneering programs and opportunities for women journalists, the IWMF effects change in newsrooms. We empower women journalists with the training, support and network they need to become leaders in the news industry, and we promote freedom of the press by recognizing brave reporters who speak out on global issues. Journalists from Ethiopia, Gaza and Azerbaijan were honored in 2012 with Courage in Journalism Awards. “I knew that I would pay the price for my courage and I was ready to accept that price,” 2012 Courage Award winner Reeyot Alemu told the IWMF. A columnist for the independent Ethiopian newspaper Feteh, Alemu received a prison sentence after being wrongfully convicted of terrorism charges related to her reporting. IWMF initiatives help women journalists thrive in their profession across the world. For example, the IWMF boosts women’s participation as entrepreneurs in the digital news media with a grant program that provides selected women journalists the opportunity to launch innovative digital media startups. Since 2011, six $20,000 grants have been awarded through the Women Entrepreneurs in the Digital News Frontier program.
