Female Friendship Films: a Post-Feminist Examination Of
FEMALE FRIENDSHIP FILMS: A POST-FEMINIST EXAMINATION OF REPRESENTATIONS OF WOMEN IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY Gülin Geloğulları UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS Thesis Prepared for the Degree of MASTER OF ARTS Approved by the Thesis Committee: Dr. George S. Larke-Walsh Dr. Jacqueline Vickery Dr. Sandra L. Spencer Geloğulları, Gülin. Female Friendship Films: A Post-Feminist Examination of Representations of Women in the Fashion Industry. Master of Arts (Radio, Television, and Film), December 2015, 101 pp., references, 56 titles. This thesis focuses on three fashion industry themed female friendship films: Pret-a- Porter/Ready to Wear (1994) by Robert Altman, The Devil Wears Prada (2006) by David Frankel, and The September Issue (2009) by R.J. Cutler. Female interpersonal relationships are complex – women often work to motivate, encourage and transform one another but can just as easily use tactics like intimidation, manipulation, and exploitation in order to save their own jobs and reputations. Through the lens of post-feminist theory, this thesis examines significant female interpersonal relationships in each film to illustrate how femininity is constructed and driven by consumer culture in the fashion industry themed films. Principia Discordia.Pdf
RAW Intro | Omar Intro | Title Page | Index | Version Notes | INTRODUCTION You hold in your hands one of the Great Books of our century fnord. Some Great Books are recognized at once with a fusillade of critical huzzahs and gonfolons, like Joyce’s Ulysses. Others appear almost furtively and are only discovered 50 years later, like Moby Dick or Mendel’s great essay on genetics. The Principia Discordia entered our space-time continuum almost as unobtrusively as a cat-burglar creeping over a windowsill. In 1968, virtually nobody had heard of this wonderful book. In 1970, hundreds of people from coast to coast were talking about it and asking the identity of the mysterious author, Malaclypse the Younger. Rumors swept across the continent, from New York to Los Angeles, from Seattle to St. Joe. Malaclypse was actually Alan Watts, one heard. No, said another legend – the Principia was actually the work of the Sufi Order. A third, very intriguing myth held that Malaclypse was a pen-name for Richard M. Nixon, who had allegedly composed the Principia during a few moments of lucidity. I enjoyed each of these yarns and did my part to help spread them. I was also careful never to contradict the occasional rumors that I had actually written the whole thing myself during an acid trip. The legendry, the mystery, the cult grew very slowly. By the mid- 1970’s, thousands of people, some as far off as Hong Kong and Australia, were talking about the Principia, and since the original was out of print by then, xerox copies were beginning to circulate here and there. -

Votes for Women! Celebrating New York’S Suffrage on November 6, 1917, New York State Passed the Referendum for Women’S Suffrage
New York State’s Women’s Suffrage History Votes for Women! Celebrating New York’s Suffrage On November 6, 1917, New York State passed the referendum for women’s suffrage. This victory was an important event for New York State and the nation. Suffrage in New York State signaled that the national passage of women’s suffrage would soon follow, and in August 1920, “Votes for Women” were constitutionally guaranteed. Although women began asserting their independence long before, the irst coordinated work for women’s suffrage began at the Seneca Falls convention in 1848. The convention served as a catalyst for debates and action. Women like Susan B. Anthony and Matilda Joslyn Gage organized and rallied for support of women’s suffrage throughout upstate New York. Others, including Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Amelia Bloomer supported the effort through the use of their pens. Stanton wrote letters, speeches, and articles while Bloomer published the irst newspaper for women, The Lily, in 1849. These combined efforts culminated in the creation of the National Woman Suffrage Association (NWSA). By the dawn of the twentieth century, the political and social landscape was much different in New York State than ifty years before. The state experienced dramatic advances in industry and urban growth. Several large waves of immigrants settled throughout the state and now more and more women were working outside of the home. Reformers concerns shifted to labor issues, health care, and temperance. New reformers like Harriot Stanton Blatch and Carrie Chapman Catt used new tactics such as marches, meetings, and signed petitions to show that New Yorkers wanted suffrage. -
Embodied Issues of Gender and Power in Aidoo's Changes
POLITICS OF THE (TEXTUAL) BODY: EMBODIED ISSUES OF GENDER AND POWER IN AIDOO’S CHANGES: A LOVE STORY , FAQIR’S PILLARS OF SALT , AND WINTERSON’S WRITTEN ON THE BODY by Jessica Lynn Jones November 2013 Director of Thesis: Dr. Marame Gueye Major Department: English This thesis explores the literary manifestation of patriarchal embodiment in several multicultural novels: Ama Ata Aidoo’s Changes: A Love Story , Fadia Faqir’s Pillars of Salt , and Jeanette Winterson’s Written on the Body . Using theories of embodiment, gender, and power, I analyze how the female body is cast as a surface onto which gendered power structures can be inscribed, as well as the ways in which the body subverts cultural gender norms. The novels exemplify the relationship among literature, culture, and consciousness and offer visions of feminism outside of a Western paradigm. [Trigger Warning: This thesis features instances of sexual violence that may be triggering to some readers.] POLITICS OF THE (TEXTUAL) BODY: EMBODIED ISSUES OF GENDER AND POWER IN AIDOO’S CHANGES: A LOVE STORY , FAQIR’S PILLARS OF SALT , AND WINTERSON’S WRITTEN ON THE BODY A Thesis Presented To the Faculty of the Department of English East Carolina University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts in English by Jessica Lynn Jones November 2013 © Jessica Lynn Jones, 2013 POLITICS OF THE (TEXTUAL) BODY: EMBODIED ISSUES OF GENDER AND POWER IN AIDOO’S CHANGES: A LOVE STORY , FAQIR’S PILLARS OF SALT , AND WINTERSON’S WRITTEN ON THE BODY by Jessica Lynn Jones APPROVED -

Disney Channel’S That’S So Raven Is Classified in BARB As ‘Entertainment Situation Comedy US’
Children’s television output analysis 2003-2006 Publication date: 2nd October 2007 ©Ofcom Contents • Introduction • Executive summary • Children’s subgenre range • Children’s subgenre range by channel • Children’s subgenre range by daypart: PSB main channels • Appendix ©Ofcom Introduction • This annex is published as a supplement to Section 2 ‘Broadcaster Output’ of Ofcom’s report The future of children’s television programming. • It provides detail on individual channel output by children’s sub-genre for the PSB main channels, the BBC’s dedicated children’s channels, CBBC and CBeebies, and the commercial children’s channels, as well as detail on genre output by day-part for the PSB main channels. (It does not include any children’s output on other commercial generalist non-terrestrial channels, such as GMTV,ABC1, Sky One.) • This output analysis examines the genre range within children’s programming and looks at how this range has changed since 2003. It is based on the BARB Children’s genre classification only and uses the BARB subgenres of Children’s Drama, Factual, Cartoons, Light entertainment/quizzes, Pre-school and Miscellaneous. • It is important to note that the BARB genre classifications have some drawbacks: – All programme output that is targeted at children is not classified as Children’s within BARB. Some shows targeted at younger viewers, either within children’s slots on the PSB main channels or on the dedicated children’s channels are not classified as Children’s. For example, Disney Channel’s That’s so raven is classified in BARB as ‘Entertainment Situation Comedy US’. This output analysis is not based on the total output of each specific children’s channel, e.g.
