Disney Channel’S That’S So Raven Is Classified in BARB As ‘Entertainment Situation Comedy US’ Children’s television output analysis 2003-2006 Publication date: 2nd October 2007 ©Ofcom Contents • Introduction • Executive summary • Children’s subgenre range • Children’s subgenre range by channel • Children’s subgenre range by daypart: PSB main channels • Appendix ©Ofcom Introduction • This annex is published as a supplement to Section 2 ‘Broadcaster Output’ of Ofcom’s report The future of children’s television programming. • It provides detail on individual channel output by children’s sub-genre for the PSB main channels, the BBC’s dedicated children’s channels, CBBC and CBeebies, and the commercial children’s channels, as well as detail on genre output by day-part for the PSB main channels. (It does not include any children’s output on other commercial generalist non-terrestrial channels, such as GMTV,ABC1, Sky One.) • This output analysis examines the genre range within children’s programming and looks at how this range has changed since 2003. It is based on the BARB Children’s genre classification only and uses the BARB subgenres of Children’s Drama, Factual, Cartoons, Light entertainment/quizzes, Pre-school and Miscellaneous. • It is important to note that the BARB genre classifications have some drawbacks: – All programme output that is targeted at children is not classified as Children’s within BARB. Some shows targeted at younger viewers, either within children’s slots on the PSB main channels or on the dedicated children’s channels are not classified as Children’s. For example, Disney Channel’s That’s so raven is classified in BARB as ‘Entertainment Situation Comedy US’. This output analysis is not based on the total output of each specific children’s channel, e.g. Playhouse Disney has programming which is not classified as Children’s in BARB and in such cases that output is excluded from this analysis. In 2006, in total, approximately 23% of total dedicated children’s channels output is not classified as Children’s genre in BARB. – One must bear in mind that programme classifications have in some cases changed year on year, e.g. a programme classified as Children’s Pre-school in one year, may be reclassified as Children’s Cartoons in another year. During the period of producing this analysis, there have been a number of programme updates implemented by BARB due to updated broadcaster programme logs. An example is that the programme Monster’s Inc was originally classified as Children’s Miscellaneous in April 2007. However during the course of the analysis it subsequently was changed to Films. • Regarding Channel 4 output it is important to note that under the Communications Act Channel 4 has a special obligation to broadcast schools programmes, with the current minimum requirement set at 330 hours per year, including repeats and first run material. Based on the information Channel 4 provides to Ofcom, it delivered 420 hours of school programming in 2006. Although Channel 4 does not have a specific remit to air children’s programming, it broadcasts a small number of children’s programmes weekday early mornings. These are generally repeats and are aimed at a Pre-school audience. ©Ofcom Executive Summary • Across the PSB main channels, comparing 2006 to 2003, hours of Drama programming has declined by 31% from 431 to 297 hours, as has Cartoons by 19% (1,250 to 1,015 hours). Hours dedicated to Factual programming have decreased very slightly by 2% (from 366 to 357 hours) as have hours dedicated to Light Entertainment/Quizzes by 4% (from 533 to 513 hours in 2006).Total hours of Pre-school provision has declined by 16% (from 1,809 hours in 2003 to 1,514 hours in 2006). • Across CBBC and CBeebies, comparing 2006 with 2003, hours of Drama provision has decreased by 26% (from 1,281 in 2003 to 948 hours in 2006) and Cartoons by 17% (890 hours in 2006). Hours of Factual programming has increased by 41% (926 hours in 2006), Light Entertainment/Quizzes by 12% (1,435 hours in 2006) and Pre-school by 3% (from 3,096 in 2003 to 3,189 hours in 2006). • Across the commercial children's channels, comparing 2006 with 2003, hours of Drama programming increased by over 150% from 1,501 hours in 2003 to 3,938 hours in 2006. Hours dedicated to Cartoons increased by 17% from 49,789 in 2003 to 58,167 in 2006 and Factual programming by 43% (although this was mainly due to an increase in provision by Discovery Kids which came off air in 2007). Hours dedicated to Pre-school output increased by 7% to 10,724 hours. Hours dedicated to Light Entertainment/Quizzes declined by over one quarter (26%) from 2,212 to 1,628 hours. • In terms of dayparts on the PSB main channels, the breakfast slot (06:00-09:29) provides the greatest proportion of children’s output across all the PSB main channels combined, which represented 69% of their children’s output in 2006. ©Ofcom Genre analysis by channel This next section examines each of the children’s sub-genres and the contribution made to total children’s programming provision by each of the PSB main channels, and each of the dedicated children’s channels. When looking at the combined output of the BBC main channels together with CBBC and CBeebies, one must note that CBBC and CBeebies are not accessible to all. ©Ofcom Total hours devoted to Children’s Drama on the PSB main channels Hrs 431 335 379 297 500 400 104 65 17 300 5 71 64 89 100 79 91 200 79 134 134 127 60 90 100 45 82 84 97 84 0 2003 2004 2005 2006 BBC1 BBC2 ITV1 GMTV Ch4 Five Source: BARB, all days ©Ofcom Total hours devoted to Children’s Drama on dedicated children’s channels Hrs Nick Jr 2 2782 3560 4586 4887 5000 CITV 4500 Toonami 4000 CBBC 3500 Cbeebies 3000 2500 Trouble 2000 Nickelodeon Replay 1500 Nickelodeon 1000 Jetix +1 500 Jetix 0 Disney Channel +1 2003 2004 2005 2006 Disney Channel Discovery Kids Source: BARB, all days ©Ofcom Total hours devoted to Children’s Cartoons on PSB main channels Hrs 1250 1201 1168 1015 1500 1400 1300 1200 221 1100 230 246 1000 102 900 73 54 201 800 188 182 165 37 700 139 111 99 142 600 119 500 400 308 361 342 300 360 200 292 100 245 262 155 0 2003 2004 2005 2006 BBC1 BBC2 ITV1 GMTV Ch4 Five Source: BARB, all days ©Ofcom Total hours devoted to Children’s Cartoons on dedicated children’s channels Hrs 50856 55744 57964 59057 60000 50000 40000 30000 20000 10000 0 2003 2004 2005 2006 Boomerang Cartoon Network Cartoon Network Plus Discovery Kids Disney Channel Disney Channel +1 Playhouse Disney Toon Disney Jetix Jetix +1 Nick JR Nickelodeon Nickelodeon Replay Trouble Cbeebies CBBC Nicktoons Toonami Trouble +1 POP Tiny Pop Boomerang +1 CITV Disney Cinemagic Disney Cinemagic +1 Cartoon Network Too Nick Jr 2 Source: BARB, all days ©Ofcom Total hours devoted to Children’s Factual on PSB main channels Hrs 366 331 291 357 500 400 37 46 16 34 2 300 390 17 200 490 38 2507 200 126 164 103 96 100 148 128 125 123 0 2003 2004 2005 2006 BBC1 BBC2 ITV1 GMTV Ch4 Five Source: BARB, all days ©Ofcom Total hours devoted to Children’s Factual on dedicated children’s channels Hrs 3036 3389 4148 4338 5000 4500 CITV 4000 CBBC 3500 Cbeebies 3000 2500 Jetix +1 2000 Jetix 1500 Toon Disney 1000 Disney Channel +1 500 Disney Channel 0 Discovery Kids 2003 2004 2005 2006 Source: BARB, all days ©Ofcom Total hours devoted to Children’s Light Entertainment/Quizzes on PSB main channels Hrs 533 567 522 513 600 17 550 05 60 3 003 100 500 123 540 450 128 131 400 350 300 222 266 197 250 367 200 150 100 175 156 192 50 81 0 2003 2004 2005 2006 BBC1 BBC2 ITV1 GMTV Ch4 Five Source: BARB, all days ©Ofcom Total hours devoted to Children’s Light Entertainment/Quizzes on dedicated children’s channels Hrs 4000 3498 3547 3022 3063 CITV 3500 Trouble +1 3000 CBBC 2500 Cbeebies 2000 Trouble 1500 Nickelodeon Replay Nickelodeon 1000 Jetix +1 500 Jetix 0 Disney Channel +1 2003 2004 2005 2006 Disney Channel Source: BARB, all days ©Ofcom Total hours devoted to Children’s Pre-school on PSB main channels Hrs 1809 1738 1633 1514 2000 1800 1600 1400 770 685 779 1200 707 1000 312 800 358 51 50 287 293 600 105 102 66 58 400 57 42 439 509 200 399 392 0 86 82 44 23 2003 2004 2005 2006 BBC1 BBC2 ITV1 GMTV Ch4 Five Source: BARB, all days ©Ofcom Total hours devoted to Children’s Pre-school on dedicated children’s channels Hrs 13119 12292 11295 13914 16000 14000 12000 10000 8000 6000 4000 2000 0 2003 2004 2005 2006 Boomerang Cartoon Network Cartoon Network Plus Discovery Kids Disney Channel Disney Channel +1 Playhouse Disney Toon Disney Jetix Jetix +1 Nick JR Nickelodeon Nickelodeon Replay Cbeebies CBBC POP Tiny Pop Boomerang +1 CITV Disney Cinemagic Disney Cinemagic +1 Cartoon Network Too Nick Jr 2 Source: BARB, all days ©Ofcom Genre analysis by channel • The next section examines the range of programming supplied by each channel as a proportion of total broadcasting hours between 2003-2006. ©Ofcom BBC1: Children’s programming by genre hours 2003 784 2004 695 2005 724 2006 469 0 20406080100 % Drama Cartoons Factual Light Ent/Quizzes Pre-school Misc Source: BARB, all days ©Ofcom BBC2: Children’s programming by genre hours 2003 1,229 2004 1,340 2005 1,169 2006 1,339 0 20406080100 % Drama Cartoons Factual Light Ent/Quizzes Pre-school Misc Source: BARB, all days ©Ofcom ITV1: Children’s programming by genre hours 2003 512 2004 472 2005 401 2006 319 0 20406080100 % Drama Cartoons Factual Light Ent/Quizzes Pre-school Misc Source: BARB, all days ©Ofcom GMTV: Children’s programming by genre hours 2003 246 2004 242 2005 264 2006 291 0 20406080100 % Drama Cartoons Factual Light Ent/Quizzes Pre-school Misc Source: BARB, all days ©Ofcom Channel 4: Children’s programming by genre hours 2003

  • The Charismatic Leadership and Cultural Legacy of Stan Lee
REINVENTING THE AMERICAN SUPERHERO: THE CHARISMATIC LEADERSHIP AND CULTURAL LEGACY OF STAN LEE Hazel Homer-Wambeam Junior Individual Documentary Process Paper: 499 Words !1 “A different house of worship A different color skin A piece of land that’s coveted And the drums of war begin.” -Stan Lee, 1970 THESIS As the comic book industry was collapsing during the 1950s and 60s, Stan Lee utilized his charismatic leadership style to reinvent and revive the superhero phenomenon. By leading the industry into the “Marvel Age,” Lee has left a multilayered legacy. Examples of this include raising awareness of social issues, shaping contemporary pop-culture, teaching literacy, giving people hope and self-confidence in the face of adversity, and leaving behind a multibillion dollar industry that employs thousands of people. TOPIC I was inspired to learn about Stan Lee after watching my first Marvel movie last spring. I was never interested in superheroes before this project, but now I have become an expert on the history of Marvel and have a new found love for the genre. Stan Lee’s entire personal collection is archived at the University of Wyoming American Heritage Center in my hometown. It contains 196 boxes of interviews, correspondence, original manuscripts, photos and comics from the 1920s to today. This was an amazing opportunity to obtain primary resources. !2 RESEARCH My most important primary resource was the phone interview I conducted with Stan Lee himself, now 92 years old. It was a rare opportunity that few people have had, and quite an honor! I use clips of Lee’s answers in my documentary.

  • Mean Girls? the Influence of Gender Portrayals in Teen Movies on Emerging Adults' Gender-Based Attitudes and Beliefs
MEAN GIRLS? THE INFLUENCE OF GENDER PORTRAYALS IN TEEN MOVIES ON EMERGING ADULTS' GENDER-BASED ATTITUDES AND BELIEFS By Elizabeth Behm-Morawitz and Dana E. Mastro This two-part exploratory study utilized a social cognitive theory frame- work in documenting gender portrayals in teen movies and investigating the influence of exposure to these images on gender-based beließ about friendships, social aggression, and roles of women in society. First, a con- tent analysis of gender portrayals in teen movies was conducted, reveal- ing that female characters are more likely to be portrayed as socially aggressive than male characters. Second, college students were surveyed about their teen movie-viewing habits, gender-related beliefs, and atti- tudes. Findings suggest that viewing teen movies is associated with neg- ative stereotypes about female friendships and gender roles. Research examining the effects of media exposure demonstrates that media consumption has a measurable influence on people's per- ceptions of the real world, and, regardless of the accuracy of these per- ceptions, they are used to help guide subsequent attitudes, judgments, and actions. For example, these results have been yielded for view- ing media representations of race,' the mentally ill,^ and the elderly.^ Past research additionally indicates that watching televised gender portrayals has an effect on individuals' real-world gender-based atti- tudes, beliefs, and behaviors."* Based on this research, and the tenets of social cognitive theory, it would be expected that consumption of teen movies would have an analogous influence on audience members' gen- der-based attitudes and beliefs. Despite the popularity of teen movies, the influence of such films on emerging adults has not been examined.
