    Cultural Anthropology through the Lens of Wikipedia: Historical Leader Networks, Gender Bias, and News-based Sentiment Peter A. Gloor, Joao Marcos, Patrick M. de Boer, Hauke Fuehres, Wei Lo, Keiichi Nemoto [email protected] MIT Center for Collective Intelligence Abstract In this paper we study the differences in historical World View between Western and Eastern cultures, represented through the English, the Chinese, Japanese, and German Wikipedia. In particular, we analyze the historical networks of the World’s leaders since the beginning of written history, comparing them in the different Wikipedias and assessing cultural chauvinism. We also identify the most influential female leaders of all times in the English, German, Spanish, and Portuguese Wikipedia. As an additional lens into the soul of a culture we compare top terms, sentiment, emotionality, and complexity of the English, Portuguese, Spanish, and German Wikinews. 1 Introduction Over the last ten years the Web has become a mirror of the real world (Gloor et al. 2009). More recently, the Web has also begun to influence the real world: Societal events such as the Arab spring and the Chilean student unrest have drawn a large part of their impetus from the Internet and online social networks. In the meantime, Wikipedia has become one of the top ten Web sites1, occasionally beating daily newspapers in the actuality of most recent news. Be it the resignation of German national soccer team captain Philipp Lahm, or the downing of Malaysian Airlines flight 17 in the Ukraine by a guided missile, the corresponding Wikipedia page is updated as soon as the actual event happened (Becker 2012.

  • “Aunt” Clara Brown
    “Aunt” Clara Brown Often called the “Angel of the Rockies,” Clara Brown reflects the richness of the African-American experience. She faced enormous challenges and reached wonderful heights in her nearly eighty-five years. Turning her back on her life in slavery, she looked west for the children she had lost. She then became one of the first African-American women to settle in Colorado. Clara was skillful in business ventures and investments that earned her thousands of dollars. She also gained a reputation for community care. She helped people of all races, but she worked especially hard to bring black people out of poverty and enslavement. Enslaved Clara Brown was probably born into slavery in Virginia around 1800. Wealthy white southerners who “owned” Clara often auctioned her to the highest bidder as if she were a horse to be sold. Each time she was bought, she would have to move, sometimes even to a different state. Clara married when she was eighteen, and later gave birth to four children. Tragically, all of her children and her husband were sold to different people across the country. She vowed to work for the rest of her life to reunite her shattered family. Clara worked as a domestic servant until 1856 when her “owner” at the time, George Brown, died. Fortunately, his family helped Clara achieve her freedom, and she could begin the search for her missing children. Heading West Hearing that one of her daughters, Eliza, may have moved to the West, Clara headed in that direction. She had money to travel, but black people at the time were forbidden from buying stagecoach tickets.

Lion Square Lodge is located in the Lionshead area of Vail. The group rates are available for up to 2 days prior and 2 days after our conference subject to availability. The Fall Conference is a time for state and branch offi cers to meet and work together. The conference is open to any member, but branches should be sure to have their offi cers attend and participate.     Zonta 100 intermezzo 1 1919-1939 Dear Zontians, My name is Amelia Earhart, woman, aviation pioneer, proud member of Zonta. I joined Zonta as a member of Boston Zonta club. The confederation of Zonta clubs was founded in 1919 in Buffalo, USA and Mary Jenkins was the first elected president. By the time I became a member, about ten years later, Zonta was an international organization thanks to the founding of a club in Toronto in 1927. Just a few weeks after I became a member, I was inducted into Zonta International. I served as an active member first in the Boston club and later in the New York club. I tributed especially to one of the ideals of Zonta International: actively promoting women to take on non-traditional fields. I wrote articles about aviation for Cosmopolitan magazine as an associate editor, served as a career counselor to women university students, and lectured at Zonta club meetings, urging members to interest themselves in aviation. Outside our ‘Zontaworld’ was and is a lot going on. After years of campaigning, the women’s suffrage movement finally achieved what they wanted for such a long time. In several countries around the world, women got the right to vote. Yet, there is still a lot of work to do before men and women have equal rights, not only in politics. In America, president Wilson suffered a blood clot which made him totally incapable of performing the duties of the presidency; the First Lady, Edith Wilson, stepped in and assumed his role. She controlled access to the president and made policy decisions on his behalf.

    National Park Service U.S. Department of the Interior Women Making History: The 19th Amendment Women The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation. —19th Amendment to the United States Constitution In 1920, after decades of tireless activism by countless determined suffragists, American women were finally guaranteed the right to vote. The year 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment. It was ratified by the states on August 18, 1920 and certified as an amendment to the US Constitution on August 26, 1920. Developed in partnership with the National Park Service, this publication weaves together multiple stories about the quest for women’s suffrage across the country, including those who opposed it, the role of allies and other civil rights movements, who was left behind, and how the battle differed in communities across the United States. Dorothea Dix, Superintendent of Nurses: When an Activist Becomes an Administrator Emily Galik Tulane University, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA ÒÏ Abstract: Although the public praised Dorothea Dix’s work as a progressive reformer before the American Civil War, her leadership as the Union Army’s Superintendent of Nurses was privately criticized. Halfway through the conflict Dix effectively fell from prominence, and other Union nurses rose as leaders in the national spotlight. This paper explores why Dix was unsuccessful in this new position, despite her previous professional success, citing her maternalist beliefs about gender propriety, her failure to work effectively with fellow administrative men, and her conflict with her subordinate nurses. By examining Dix’s story, one can see how a woman could spend decades perfecting her navigation of the patriarchal political and social scenes of the mid nineteenth century, and how these curated leadership strategies hindered her success in a new environment. The modern workforce is not the only place where leading women can fail to thrive in a new setting, and hopefully modern women can recognize the timeless warnings posed by Dix’s years as superintendent: years of experience can blind one to the benefits of and need to adapt to a new environment, and new colleagues may take your qualifications gathered in other fields with a grain of salt. Introduction In 1861, US Secretary of War Simon Cameron appointed Dorothea Dix as Superintendent of Nurses for the Union Army despite her lack of experience as a nurse or healthcare administrator (Gollaher 1995). Dix’s reform work followed the Jacksonian Era, which promoted jail and prison as effective institutions of punishment.
