Contemporary Issues in Technology and Teacher Education, 17(2), 229-249. 3D Modeling and Printing in History/Social Studies Classrooms: Initial Lessons and Insights Robert Maloy University of Massachusetts Amherst Torrey Trust University of Massachusetts Amherst Suzan Kommers University of Massachusetts Amherst Allison Malinowski Williston Northampton School Irene LaRoche Amherst Regional Middle School This exploratory study examined the use of 3D technology by teachers and students in four middle school history/social studies classrooms. As part of a university- developed 3D Printing 4 Teaching & Learning project, teachers integrated 3D modeling and printing into curriculum topics in world geography, U.S. history, and government/civics. Multiple sets of data were collected documenting classroom implementation of 3D technology. Seven key insights emerged: Teachers and students initially found it challenging to imagine ways to use 3D printed physical objects to represent social science concepts; students found 3D printing projects were a positive, self-fulfilling way to show their ideas about history topics; teachers and students found the 3D modeling program difficult to use; 3D modeling and printing altered the teacher-as-expert/student-as-novice relationship; 3D modeling and printing changed how teaching and learning happened in history/social studies classrooms; partnering with content and technical experts was an important element of success; and some teachers shifted their thinking about the value of using 3D printing in history/social studies classes. These insights can help facilitate the integration of 3D technologies in history/social studies classrooms. -

OCTOBER 2018 SPECIAL OLYMPICS – YORK COUNTY NEWSLETTER Special Olympics USA Games Seattle 2018 Bob Laudeman, Guest Reporter Throughout the first-week of July two athletes from Special Olympics York County, Jonathan Martin, and Jenny Laudeman, participated in the 2018 Special Olympics USA Games held in Seattle, Washington. As members of Team Pennsylvania, they competed for three days at the Willows Run Golf Club in Redmond, Washington under the direction of Coach Nat Martin. Jonathan competed as a Level 4, Individual Play golfer, playing nine holes of golf each day on a well maintained, challenging course. Jenny participated as a Level 1 Individual Skills golfer that included: chipping, pitching, short putt, long putt, driver, and five-iron competitions. Both athletes improved their scores each day, and at the end of the competition, Jonathan and Jenny proudly accepted Silver Medals at the Awards Ceremony. Team Pennsylvania gathered in Philadelphia on Friday, June 29th and flew to Seattle on Saturday, June 30th. Team Pennsylvania included 50 athletes and unified partners, 16 coaches, and SOPA staff, who were all housed in Terry Hall at the University of Washington Campus. The Opening Ceremony was held on Sunday, July 1st at the University of Washington Husky Football Stadium and televised on ABC Sports and ESPN. The competitions, held in fourteen (14) sports, began on Monday, July 2nd and ended on Friday, July 6th. Team Pennsylvania athletes competed in Athletics, Basketball, Bocce, Bowling, Golf, Gymnastics, Powerlifting, Unified Soccer, Swimming, and Tennis. The Closing Ceremony was held Friday evening, and Team Pennsylvania returned to Philadelphia on Saturday, July 8th.Jonathan and Jenny enjoyed competing, but also loved the Opening Ceremony, visiting the Fan Zone, the Mariners baseball game, and sight-seeing in Seattle with their families. -

BHARAT (INDIA) FACT SHEET MISSION: To provide year–round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic–type sports for children and adults with an intellectual disability, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. HISTORY: Founded in 1987 as Special Olympics India and later changed to Special Olympics Bharat in 2001 with 28,652 registered athletes. PARTICIPANTS (per the 2015 census): Registered athletes and participants: 1,414,202 Coaches: 119,900 Competition opportunities: 33,689 GOAL: To reach 1,250,000 athletes and participants by the end of 2015 INTERNATIONAL EVENTS: 57 athletes participated in the 2013 Special Olympics World Summer Games in PyeongChang, South Korea Participation in the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Athens. Participation in the 2010 Special Olympics Global Congress in Marrakech, Morocco. In 2006, Special Olympics Bharat was recognized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India, as National sports federation for intellectually disabled and also granted priority classification. Typically their National Games and Torch Runs span multiple cities and states securing media and supporters. In 2005, the Program hosted a 15 city Torch Run; National Games in 9 locations for 12 sports. In December 2008 SO Bharat actively participated in Global Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) for World Winter Games. The Program hosted two major cricket events since 2004, Ahmadabad, Gujarat (2004); Mumbai (2006). Both events had hundreds of athletes from multiple countries with thousands of spectators and supporters In addition to the 13,117 competitions at local, state and National levels, 2,116 Coach Education Training Sessions were held in 2011. -

The 2014 Games official website is www.2014specialolympics.org and is constantly being updated with information, including feature articles on participants, tentative schedules, photo galleries, and much more. What are the official dates of the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games? The official dates for the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games are June 14-21. The Family Center will open at 8:00am on Saturday, June 14. The Opening Ceremony will take place on Sunday, June 15 and competition will commence on Monday, June 16. The competition will conclude on Friday, June 20 and the Closing Ceremony is that same evening. What airport do we fly into? There are several airports that service the Mercer County area including Philadelphia International, Newark Liberty International, LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy. Special Olympics Bharat – Goa Annual Report for the Year 2015 - 2016 ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR 2015 - 2016 Report on 4th Preparatory camp at Chennai, Tamil Nadu The fourth and the final preparatory Camp for the Special Olympics World Summer Games 2015 was held from 20-29 May 2015 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Various sport events were conducted across three venues namely, St. Joseph college of Engineering, SDAT Aquatic complex, Valachery and Jawaharlal Stadium. The venue of the camp for accommodation was at the St. Joseph’s college of Engineering, Chennai. 235 Athletes and 61 Coaches from 21 States participated at the Camp to take their sporting quotient a notch higher, having attended all three Preparatory Camps earlier. From Goa, 18 Athletes, 6 coaches and 1 coach assistant participated for this final preparatory camp.
