ARTICLES OF INTEREST August 3, 2018 QUOTE(S) OF THE WEEK “Every great inspiration is but an experiment - though every experiment we know, is not a great inspiration.” – Charles Ives “When everything seems to be going against you, remember that the airplane takes off against the wind, not with it.” – Henry Ford “I personally think there's going to be a greater demand in 10 years for liberal arts majors than there were for programming majors and maybe even engineering, because when the data is all being spit out for you, options are being spit out for you, you need a different perspective in order to have a different view of the data.” – Mark Cuban “Imagination is not only the uniquely human capacity to envision that which is not, and therefore the fount of all invention and innovation. In its arguably most transformative and revelatory capacity, it is the power to that enables us to empathize with humans whose experiences we have never shared.” – J. K. It is not all mathematics, nor all logic, but it is somewhat beauty and poetry.” – Maria Mitchell “Knowledge once gained casts a light beyond its own immediate boundaries.” – John Tyndall “As to Bell's talking telegraph, it only creates interest in scientific circles... its commercial values will be limited.” – Elisha Gray “One of the problems with posing a 'bold new plan' is that you can't just extrapolate from previous plans.” – Nathan Myhrvold VIDEO(S) OF THE WEEK Our Favorite Fictional Female Scientists Science Goes to the Movies Computer

Contemporary Issues in Technology and Teacher Education, 17(2), 229-249. 3D Modeling and Printing in History/Social Studies Classrooms: Initial Lessons and Insights Robert Maloy University of Massachusetts Amherst Torrey Trust University of Massachusetts Amherst Suzan Kommers University of Massachusetts Amherst Allison Malinowski Williston Northampton School Irene LaRoche Amherst Regional Middle School This exploratory study examined the use of 3D technology by teachers and students in four middle school history/social studies classrooms. As part of a university- developed 3D Printing 4 Teaching & Learning project, teachers integrated 3D modeling and printing into curriculum topics in world geography, U.S. history, and government/civics. Multiple sets of data were collected documenting classroom implementation of 3D technology. Seven key insights emerged: Teachers and students initially found it challenging to imagine ways to use 3D printed physical objects to represent social science concepts; students found 3D printing projects were a positive, self-fulfilling way to show their ideas about history topics; teachers and students found the 3D modeling program difficult to use; 3D modeling and printing altered the teacher-as-expert/student-as-novice relationship; 3D modeling and printing changed how teaching and learning happened in history/social studies classrooms; partnering with content and technical experts was an important element of success; and some teachers shifted their thinking about the value of using 3D printing in history/social studies classes. These insights can help facilitate the integration of 3D technologies in history/social studies classrooms.

  • THE 2016 DELL MAGAZINES AWARD This Year’S Trip to the International Conference on the Fantastic in the Arts Was Spent in a Whirl of Activity
EDITORIAL Sheila Williams THE 2016 DELL MAGAZINES AWARD This year’s trip to the International Conference on the Fantastic in the Arts was spent in a whirl of activity. In addition to academic papers, author readings, banquets, and the awards ceremony, it was a celebration of major life events. Thursday night saw a surprise birthday party for well-known SF and fantasy critic Gary K. Wolfe and a compelling memorial for storied editor David G. Hartwell. Sunday morning brought us the beautiful wedding of Rebecca McNulty and Bernie Goodman. Rebecca met Bernie when she was a finalist for our annual Dell Magazines Award for Undergraduate Ex- cellence in Science Fiction and Fantasy Writing several years ago. Other past finalists were also in attendance at the conference. In addition to Re- becca, it was a joy to watch E. Lily Yu, Lara Donnelly, Rich Larson, and Seth Dickin- son welcome a brand new crop of young writers. The winner of this year’s award was Rani Banjarian, a senior at Vanderbilt University. Rani studied at an international school in Beirut, Lebanon, before coming to the U.S. to attend college. Fluent in Arabic and English, he’s also toying with adding French to his toolbox. Rani is graduating with a duel major in physics and writing. His award winning short story, “Lullabies in Arabic” incorporates his fascination with memoir writing along with a newfound interest in science fiction. My co-judge Rick Wilber and I were once again pleased that the International Association for the Fantastic in the Arts and Dell Magazines cosponsored Rani’s expense-paid trip to the conference in Orlando, Florida, and the five hundred dollar prize.

  • Music November 29 Picturehouse Central
C21Kids | Fall 2016 Feature: Music usic is ubiquitous in children’s television. And the catchier it is, the better. Think Mback to your favourite series as a child and almost certainly the theme song will enter your head. And stay there for the rest of the day, maybe even the rest of your adult life. Hitting the Title music helps children to identify a show and draw them to the TV, Pied Piper-style. Anne Miller, joint MD of music publishing company Accorder Music, recalls a decades-old experiment into the phenomenon. Researchers counted how many children would come running in from a dif erent room to the television set when a particular title tune was played. “It’s the music that engages the right note child. If the child is bored, they will just walk away,” Miller says.
