The junkie told me that I could try it if I paid half in advanc e . So I paid. I trie d the b ike and it w as no go o d. The junkie walked away and didn't return my money. Then two kids drove by on a big blac k bike. They wanted to sell it to me for 15 guilders. I told them that I would give them the bike I just bought and another 5 guilders. They looked at the bike and laughed. One kid tried it and found out it was no good, the brake just broke. I told them that they c ould repair it. They didn't want it. So I gave them 10 guldens and left them the broken bike as well. Finally I had got another bike. It was worse than the bike that was stolen from me in the first plac e. The cat b ro ught it to its maste r as a pre se nt and as an ac t of gratitude. Whe n she saw the pige o n in the cat's mouth, my landlady sc reamed. The c at dropped it. The pigeon was still alive, but its leg and its wing were broken. My landlady c alled the animal emergenc y servic e. After one hour they came to take the pigeon and cure it. She had to pay 25 guilde rs. The c at was punished and it was not allowed to be inside the house during the night inside the house through the night. 6 7 VB_book_21_5.qxd 21.5.2003 13:21 Page 10 VB_book_21_5.qxd 21.5.2003 13:21 Page 11 utrecht utrecht FOLD I NG - SCREEN, 1999 The Folding-Sc reen represent my private plac e, a symbolic shelter in a foreign environment, with whic h I fenc ed in myse lf f ro m the surro undings. This work was made during the student exc hange pro- gramme in Utrec ht. It is made of a c ardboard folding-sc reen. Behind it are all my things in the studio, inc luding the leftover material whic h resulted from making the folding-sc reen. On the inside of the folding-sc reen are some photos taken in the c ity and in my apartment and are showing the garbage and all the me ss. In this work I combined two themes that at the moment seemed to me to b e mo st impo rtant: the sit- uation in the studio, where it w as impo ssib le to w o rk - there were four of us (e xc hange stude nts) in a relatively small plac e, w hic h had no do o rs, so anybody c ould look in at any moment.     david maljkovic PaRT oNE aBoUT THE aRTiST David Maljkovi ´c was born in 1973 in Rijeka, the largest seaport in Croatia. He studied at the universities of Rijeka and Zagreb and has taken artist residency positions in Sweden, Amsterdam, Berlin, Paris and Munich. In 2003, Maljkovi ´c spent two years as one of 50 resident artists in the Rijksakademie, Amsterdam’s academy of fine art. He described this as a high point in his career; “You could think about art without worrying about surviving.”1 Maljkovi ´c’s artwork is multi-faceted and consists of sculpture, collage, painting, drawing, architectural design and film production. Maljkovi ´c values his traditional art training. He feels this understanding is at the heart of his practise and a part of everything he produces. The artist uses two- dimensional planning as the springboard for all of his artwork whether the final piece is to be two or three dimensional and no matter what genre it is. Maljkovi ´c is influenced by leading Croatian sculptor, photographer and installation artist Sanja Ivekovic and Turner Prize nominated, installation artist Mike Nelson. Maljkovi ´c now lives and works in Croatia’s capital Zagreb. aBoUT cRoaTia Croatia is a former Yugoslav republic on the Adriatic Sea. Croatia became a kingdom in the 10th century. It was conquered in 1091 by Hungary and a union was formed that lasted for eight centuries. In 1918 Croatia entered into a union known as the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes. This new state was renamed Yugoslavia in 1929, with King Alexander, a Serb, establishing a royal dictatorship.

But more than anything, it is about their relationship in the elusive cultural context broadly defined by the term “post-Yugoslav cinema,” where “post” implies a cultural space that is never entirely “beyond” (Bhabha 1994). The work presented here is the result of a years-long struggle to understand the elusive role of culture in catastrophes and their aftermath. My work is defined by overarching questions that haunt me because of their ethical importance, but also because there are no definitive answers to them. A search for finite answers when it comes to war trauma as screen memory is an always already lost battle. Instead of finite conclusions, there are only fleeting impressions, tendencies, and trajectories than one can detect and try to give temporary coherence to.

Paranoia and Conspiracy in the Works of Dušan Kovačević Goran Lazičić Keywords Yugoslav drama; paranoia; comedy; political satire The Balkan Spy revisited Dušan Kovačević (b. 1948) is more than just a prominent playwright in contem- porary Serbia; he is also a prominent figure in ex-Yugoslav culture. Used almost daily, many sentences from his plays or film scripts have become a part of every- day language, so much so that speakers often do not even know of their actual origin. Kovačević’s theater plays 1 and the films based on his screenplays are among the unforgettable classics of Serbian and Yugoslav cinema.2 Therefore, it is not at all simple to create a critical distance when speaking of his dramatic oeuvre.
