Introduction When the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes – from 1929 Kingdom of Yugoslavia – was formed in 1918, one of its most important tasks was to forge a common collective identity. Intellectual elites in the young state with great optimism agreed that education would play a crucial role in this process. It should come as no surprise, then, that a relatively rich tradition of scholarly research into the representation of collective identities in Yugoslav education has originated, precisely to account for the failure of the Yugoslav project in the long term. Recently, a growing body of scholarly research has established textbooks as one of the more rewarding sources for studying collective identity in education, focusing on ‘what knowledge is included and rejected in ... textbooks, and how the transmission of this selected knowledge often attempts to shape a particular form of national memory, national identity and national consciousness’.1 For the Yugoslav case this emerging research field so far has primarily examined textbooks which were used in the period directly preceding, during and following the disintegration of Yugoslavia.2 However, as the present article hopes to illustrate, textbook analysis can also provide the historian with interesting new elements for the study of collective identities in Yugoslavia’s more distant past. Book Art in Croatia BOOK ART IN CROATIA National and University Library in Zagreb, Zagreb, 2018 Contents Foreword / 4 Centuries of Book Art in Croatia / 5 Catalogue / 21 Foreword The National and University Library in Croatia, with the aim to present and promote the Croatian cultural heritage has prepared the exhibition Book Art in Croatia. The exhibition gives a historical view of book preparation and design in Croatia from the Middle Ages to the present day. It includes manuscript and printed books on different topics and themes, from mediaeval evangelistaries and missals to contemporary illustrated editions, print portfolios and artists’ books. Featured are the items that represent the best samples of artistic book design in Croatia with regard to their graphic design and harmonious relationship between the visual and graphic layout and content. The author of the exhibition is art historian Milan Pelc, who selected 60 items for presentation on panels. In addition to the introductory essay, the publication contains the catalogue of items with short descriptions. 4 Milan Pelc CENTURIES OF BOOK ART IN CROATIA Introduction Book art, a constituent part of written culture and Croatian cultural heritage as a whole, is ex- ceptionally rich and diverse. This essay does not pretend to describe it in its entirety. Its goal is to shed light on some (key) moments in its complex historical development and point to its most important specificities. The essay does not pertain to entire Croatian literary heritage, but only to the part created on the historical Croatian territory and created by the Croats. Winter storms move shoals from one year to the next and maps of the sea's floor quickly go out-of-date. So last September, when rented a boat with some friends and set out down along Slovenia's shore, I was relieved to find we were skirting a rocky rim. After years of crossing disputed borders, I could finally stop worrying whether my map was right. The land of the Istrian peninsula is so firm that medieval Venetian churches still stand secure just a few feet from the water's edge. Their square bell towers are better landmarks than harbor bouys. Leaving Koper and sailing east, all you have to do is count them, as you might bus stops on a familiar route. But the towers are also a testament to the strength of the lost Venetian Republic that built them. City of Rijeka Intercultural Profile This report is based upon the visit of the CoE expert team on 11 & 12 July 2016, comprising Phil Wood and Ivana D’Alessando. It should be read in parallel with the Council of Europe’s response to Rijeka’s ICC Index questionnaire, which contains many recommendations and pointers to examples of good practice. 1. Introduction Rijeka is the principal seaport and the third-largest city in Croatia (after Zagreb and Split). It is located on Kvarner Bay, an inlet of the Adriatic Sea and has a population of 128,624 inhabitants (2011). The metropolitan area, which includes adjacent towns and municipalities, has a population of more than 240,000. Historically, because of its strategic position and deep-water port, the city was fiercely contested, especially amongst Italy, Hungary (serving as the Kingdom of Hungary's largest and most important port), and Croatia, changing hands and demographics many times over centuries. This is reflected in the city’s alternative names, it being known in Italian and Hungarian as Fiume, in Slovene as Reka and in German as Sankt Veit am Flaum. According to the 2011 census data, the overwhelming majority of its citizens (82.52%) are presently Croats, along with small numbers of Bosniaks, Italians and Serbs. Members of all 22 of Croatia’s official National Minorities are resident in the city. Rijeka is the main city of Primorje-Gorski Kotar County which includes several islands of the northern Dalmatian coast, and has a population of 296,195 and, for the purposes of Intercultural Cities membership, the whole of the County is included. -

ISSN 0354-8724 (hard copy) | ISSN 1820-7138 (online) Ethnic Intermarriage in Croatia with Special Emphasis on the Czech Minority Snježana MrdjenA*, Maja BahnikB Received: March 20, 2018 | Revised: June 8, 2018 | Accepted: June 11, 2018 DOI: 10.5937/22-16884 Abstract This article analyzes interethnic marriage in Croatia in terms of nationality throughout a forty-five year period (1970-2015) on the basis of vital statistics with special consideration of the Czech minority. The usual method of endogamy/exogamy percentage and the odds ratio method were applied. The results show that the percentage of endogamous marriages in Croatia has significantly risen after 1991. Dif- ferent ethnic groups display various attitudes towards endogamy, ranging from 15 to over 90 percent. Along with Italians, Hungarians and Slovaks, Czechs are less endogamous than other national minori- ties. Gender differences, contrary to the conclusions in the literature, show that Czech men enter into marriage outside their group less often than Czech women. The change of political climate in Croa- tia during the 1990s resulted not only in the increase of endogamy, but also affected the structure of mixed marriages among Czechs. The Formation of Croatian National Identity

It develops a novel framework that calls both primordialist and modernist approaches to nationalism and national identity into question before applying that framework to Croatia. In doing so it not only provides a new way of thinking about how national identity is formed and why it is so important but also closely examines 1990s Croatia in a unique way. An explanation of how Croatian national identity was formed in an abstract way by a historical narrative that traces centuries of yearning for a national state is given. The book goes on to show how the government, opposition parties, dissident intellectuals and diaspora change change groups offered alternative accounts of this narrative in order to The formation legitimise contemporary political programmes based on different visions of national identity.
