Introduction When the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes – from 1929 Kingdom of Yugoslavia – was formed in 1918, one of its most important tasks was to forge a common collective identity. Intellectual elites in the young state with great optimism agreed that education would play a crucial role in this process. It should come as no surprise, then, that a relatively rich tradition of scholarly research into the representation of collective identities in Yugoslav education has originated, precisely to account for the failure of the Yugoslav project in the long term. Recently, a growing body of scholarly research has established textbooks as one of the more rewarding sources for studying collective identity in education, focusing on ‘what knowledge is included and rejected in ... textbooks, and how the transmission of this selected knowledge often attempts to shape a particular form of national memory, national identity and national consciousness’.1 For the Yugoslav case this emerging research field so far has primarily examined textbooks which were used in the period directly preceding, during and following the disintegration of Yugoslavia.2 However, as the present article hopes to illustrate, textbook analysis can also provide the historian with interesting new elements for the study of collective identities in Yugoslavia’s more distant past. The Emancipatory Potential of Karaman's Concept of "Peripheral Art”: Still Operative? Laris Borić University of Zadar, Croatia When viewed within its broader European context, the entire premodern Croatian architectural and artistic heritage is characterized by some atypical features. The traditional Eurocentric art-historical narrative follows regional and national paradigms, recognizing trails of political and cultural dominance that emit style and form from centers of power toward near and distant areas in what are usually seen as concentric circles. In the continental parts of Croatia those influences were mostly of a Central European nature, while on the Adriatic coastline there was a continuous flow of Italic influences. However, a cultural bipolarity developed when the long continuity of Roman civilization that extended in the eastern Adriatic communities throughout the medieval period was countered by that of the ninth- century Croatian kingdom whose cultural milieu would permeate that of the coastal Romanized towns. Such fusion of traditions, cultures, and collective experiences, which generated a peculiar genius loci at the confluence of the East and the West, later was dominated by Venice, while the Balkan hinterland was ruled by the Ottoman Empire. Early- to mid-twentieth-century art historians who adhered to fragmentary and nationally biased interpretation often saw eastern Adriatic medieval and early-modern art as a weakened provincial reflection of what was imported from Italian centers.1 Such writings were subsequently abused by pre-World War II politics as proof of a territorial claim by Italy to the whole Adriatic rim, sometimes even as an indication of Italian superiority over Slavic (Croatian and Slovenian) ethnicity or race. -

Book Art in Croatia BOOK ART IN CROATIA National and University Library in Zagreb, Zagreb, 2018 Contents Foreword / 4 Centuries of Book Art in Croatia / 5 Catalogue / 21 Foreword The National and University Library in Croatia, with the aim to present and promote the Croatian cultural heritage has prepared the exhibition Book Art in Croatia. The exhibition gives a historical view of book preparation and design in Croatia from the Middle Ages to the present day. It includes manuscript and printed books on different topics and themes, from mediaeval evangelistaries and missals to contemporary illustrated editions, print portfolios and artists’ books. Featured are the items that represent the best samples of artistic book design in Croatia with regard to their graphic design and harmonious relationship between the visual and graphic layout and content. The author of the exhibition is art historian Milan Pelc, who selected 60 items for presentation on panels. In addition to the introductory essay, the publication contains the catalogue of items with short descriptions. 4 Milan Pelc CENTURIES OF BOOK ART IN CROATIA Introduction Book art, a constituent part of written culture and Croatian cultural heritage as a whole, is ex- ceptionally rich and diverse. This essay does not pretend to describe it in its entirety. Its goal is to shed light on some (key) moments in its complex historical development and point to its most important specificities. The essay does not pertain to entire Croatian literary heritage, but only to the part created on the historical Croatian territory and created by the Croats. Vlaho Bukovac and My Search for His Paintings in England
VLAHO BUKOVAC AND MY SEARCH FOR HIS PAINTINGS IN ENGLAND It was in the late 1980s, after I had read the delightful autobiography by the painter Vlaho Bukovac, 1855 – 1922, published in Zagreb in 1918, that I realised that this important Croatian artist had found “home from home” in North Yorkshire, just as I had done in the small town of Bedale, my late husband's family home. Harrogate, where Samson Fox, 1838 – 1903, one of Vlaho's most important collectors in England lived, was only a matter of miles away from Bedale, a drive of less than an hour. Harrogate was then, and still is today, a lively spa town, where people came to drink sulphur waters for their health, to spend a holiday, to enjoy themselves, to make friends, to see exhibitions and to go to the theatre. The famous Royal Pump Room, now a museum, was a place to meet. Samson Fox, the ancestor of the present day well known acting family, Edward, Robert, James, Emilia Fox, to mention just a few, was a self-made engineer and a clever business man, who had invented an important part for the engines of steamships and had thus become very wealthy himself. He had been elected three times the Mayor of Harrogate, never repeated since, owing to his good works and generosity to many causes. His bust, by Prince Victor von Hohenlohe-Langenborg, still graces the corridors of the Royal College of Music in London. Fox had donated £45,000, a very large amount at the time, for the building of the College in 1894. -

The land of the Istrian peninsula is so firm that medieval Venetian churches still stand secure just a few feet from the water's edge. Their square bell towers are better landmarks than harbor bouys. Given the prominent position in the Croatian cultural imagination of Vlaho Bukovac’s 1895 painting of the Illyrian Movement, this article argues that the later accounts of early to mid- 19 th-century Illyrian politics and literature remain contaminated, and structurally so, by Bukovac’s treatment of the visual. This visual contaminant then points to more general political and cultural practices in Austria-Hungary at the time, including psychoanalysis, not least where psychoanalysis addresses the scope of image and the phantasmatic. Analyzing three paintings where Bukovac takes up the subject of literature cum the phantasmatic along- side Freud’s 1908 study of „Der Dichter und das Phantasieren”, I propose that in both litera- ture serves to indicate the political logic of metonymy or the metonymic logic of the poli- tical; furthermore, I show that Freud, unlike Bukovac, fails to sustain this logic precisely in places where he sets out to classify wishes.
