Stephen Jaeger, Chair Professor Marianne Kalinke Associate Professor Frederick Schwink Associate Professor Laurie Johnson Associate Professor Carol Symes ii ABSTRACT This dissertation explores the issue of foreignness in the Nibelungenlied, raising questions about the nature, and crossing, of intra-Christian borders within the text that separate customs, practices, and worldviews. It analyzes cultural alterity and its attendant outcomes in the first half of the Nibelungenlied using concepts from anthropology and cultural and sociological theory. The dissertation argues that multiple levels of foreignness, as defined by the philosopher Bernd Waldenfels, separate characters in the Nibelungenlied. Despite their varying origins, these instances of alienation all have a common result: a lack of a complete picture of the world for individual characters and the prevention of close human connections that would allow intentions and motivations to be divined. Characters’ imperfect understandings of their surroundings are fostered by their foreignness and drive many of the conflicts in the text, including Siegfried’s verbal clash with the Burgundians when he first arrives in Worms, Brünhild’s entanglement with Gunther and Siegfried, and the argument between Kriemhild and Brünhild. In addition, this dissertation argues that the constant interaction with the foreign undergone by the court at Worms leads to a change in its culture away from one which sees appearance and reality as one and the same to one that takes advantage of the power granted by a newfound ability to separate Sein from Schein. -

The Nibelungenlied at the Court of Burgundy, Kriemhild, the Virginal
The Nibelungenlied At the court of Burgundy, Kriemhild, the virginal sister of King Gunther and his brothers Gernot and Giselher, has a dream of a falcon that is killed by two eagles. Her mother interprets this to mean that Kriemhild’s future husband will die a violent death, and Kriemhild consequently resolves to remain unmarried. Siegfried is the crown prince of Xanten. In an introductory narrative, he slays a dragon and bathes in its blood, rendering his skin sword-proof, save one small spot which the dragon’s blood didn’t cover; he also obtains a large treasure, after killing two brothers who had drawn him into the struggle over how to divide the wealth between themselves. Siegfried arrives in Worms with the hopes of wooing Kriemhild. Upon his arrival, Hagen tells Gunther about Siegfried’s youthful exploits that involved winning a treasure and lands from a pair of brothers, Nibelung and Schilbung, whom Siegfried had killed when he was unable to divide the treasure between them and, almost incidentally, the killing of a dragon. After killing the dragon, he had bathed in its blood rendering him invulnerable. Unfortunately for Siegfried a leaf fell onto his back from a linden tree as he was bathing and the tiny patch of skin that it covered did not come into contact with the dragon’s blood, so that Siegfried remains vulnerable in that one spot. In spite of Hagen’s threatening stories about his youth, the Burgundians welcome him, but do not allow him to meet the princess. Disappointed, he nonetheless remains in Worms and helps Gunther defeat the invading Saxons. -

The German Sub-Faculty has agreed that, since 2005, the new system of German spelling and punctuation (according to the ‘Rechtschreibreform’) should constitute the teaching standard. Both old and new systems, however, will be accepted for examination purposes, provided that, in either case, the rules are applied with a reasonable degree of consistency. GERMAN LANGUAGE After the Preliminary Examination a variety of approaches are used in the language teaching offered to you. Language classes will usually be arranged by your college and there will be opportunities for improving the whole range of skills: reading, listening, writing, and speaking. In addition, there will also be centrally organized classes with Lektoren on offer which students can choose from, with a focus on conversation or writing skills on topics such as cinema, creative writing, history, politics and current affairs in Germany and Austria. Developing your skills in translation will also encourage you to write accurately and acquire a greater degree of Sprachgefühl, and there will be opportunities to develop oral and aural skills with native speakers. Communicative skills will be developed in preparation for the Essay and the Oral examination. -

Dieser Artikel legt nahe, dass die beiden Frauengruppen im Nibelungenlied die Kirche und die Männer des Kaiserreichs repräsentieren. Japanische Gesellschaft fur Germanistik Jun YAMAMOTO KONZEPTIONEN DER GESCHICHTLICHKEIT IN DER GENEALOGISCHEN VORGESCHICHTE VON DIETRICHS FLUCHT* Die Heldendichtungen, die in Vorgängen und Figuren der Vergangenheit ihren Kern haben und durch die ,erste' Literarisierung1 der historischen Faktengene riert wurden, galten im Bereich der oralen Kultur, besonders für die illiterate Kriegeradelsschicht, als spezifische Form historischer Überlieferung, welche die Memoria der großen Könige und Helden tradiert. Was in ihnen erzählt ist, ist nicht identisch mit der historischen Wahrheit im geschichtswissenschaftli chen Sinne, aber es besteht heute breiter Konsens, dass sie als das Medium an erkannt waren, welches den Gegenstand des kulturellen Gedächtnisses2 über• liefert. Daneben bildete auch die schriftliche Geschichtsschreibung, die zur la teinischen Schriftkultur der Kleriker gehört, eine lange Tradition. Es gab somit im Mittelalter zwei parallele Geschichtsüberlieferungstraditionen, die Ge schichtswissen bewahren. Sie enthalten unterschiedliche, von den jeweiligen Medienlogiken bedingte Geschichtlichkeitskonzeptionen. Der Unterschied der beiden Geschichtsüberlieferungen zeigt sich besonders darin, was man in den jeweiligen Geschichtskonzeptionen für „ verbürgt" gehalten hat. Während in der Geschichtsschreibung in Westeuropa dem lateinisch-schriftlich Überliefer• ten, das die heilsgeschichtliche Konstruktion oder Reichsgeschichte darstellt, Geschichtlichkeit im engeren Sinn zugeschrieben wurde, verbindet in der mündlich-volkssprachigen Geschichtsüberlieferung -

THIS publication differs in various points from the tradi- tional Middle High German textbook: i) The whole presentation centers around the texts, and a minimum amount of grammar is given for the interpretation and understanding of the texts. Full understanding of the text will prove essential for literary appreciation and for philological studies. 2) In the introductory part the material is presented in lesson form, making it possible to create study units. The lessons sometimes seem to be rather long. However, many of the given grammatical items are, at least for the beginning, only of secondary importance. If they occur again later, there are footnotes with the necessary references. -
The Oral Tradition and Middle High German Literature
Oral Tradition, 1/2 (1986): 398-445 The Oral Tradition and Middle High German Literature Franz H. Bäuml Serious concern with the oral tradition as it existed before and side by side with Middle High German written literature is linked in Middle High German studies to the introduction of the theory of oral- formulaic composition (henceforth referred to as the Theory).1 True, the existence of an oral tradition has never seriously been doubted, but, beyond rather general notions of recurrent structural elements and hypotheses of a development of oral narrative texts in verse from song to epic,2 hypotheses which saw the oral text for the most part through the spectacles of literacy as a basically stable unit subject to alteration and adulteration, the mechanics of an oral tradition played no role in research concerned with Middle High German literature. And to this day we know practically nothing about the oral performances of the vernacular lyric of the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries.3 Research on the oral tradition of epic poetry and its relationship to the written transmission, however, received more than a negligible impetus from the Theory, despite its general rejection, particularly on the part of German germanists.4 In this survey of the impact of the Theory on Middle High German studies, I shall therefore neither pass over the sins of the representatives of the Theory in silence, nor suppress my own view that the application of the Theory, amended and stripped of its early enthusiasms, has set in motion a current of research on the interrelationships between literacy and orality which promises to illuminate more than one dark corner of literary and social history.5 The initial approaches to Middle High German texts with the concepts of the Theory were rather scattered. -

Works Cited 49 2 Introduction The role of women in Medieval literature, including Germanic poetry, is a topic which has received much attention over the years by a great number of scholars including but not limited to Jane Chance, Christine Fell and Jerold C. Frakes. It has been the subject of a number of studies into, for instance, gender role division and power relations, but there is still a lot that can be said about these topics.
