The article suggests that in the Nibelungenlied the two groups of women represent the Church and the men the Empire. The group of traditional women represents the Church before the breakout of the historical conflict with the Empire while the group of rebellious women represents the Church in the period of advanced conflict. Sie sind in zwei Gruppen unterteilt: die traditionellen Frauen, welche ihre sozial festgelegte Stellung akzeptieren und die Manner unterstützen; und die Frauen, welche gegen diese Tradition rebellieren und versuchen, ein Teil der Männerwelt zu werden, und die damit die Grenzen der Tradition überschreiten. Dieser Artikel legt nahe, dass die beiden Frauengruppen im Nibelungenlied die Kirche und die Männer des Kaiserreichs repräsentieren. Die Gruppe der traditionellen Frauen repräsentiert die Kirche vor dem Ausbruch des historischen Konflikts mit dem Reich; die Gruppe der rebellierenden Frauen symbolisiert die Kirche in der Periode des fortgeschrittenen Konflikts. THIS publication differs in various points from the tradi- tional Middle High German textbook: i) The whole presentation centers around the texts, and a minimum amount of grammar is given for the interpretation and understanding of the texts. Full understanding of the text will prove essential for literary appreciation and for philological studies. 2) In the introductory part the material is presented in lesson form, making it possible to create study units. The lessons sometimes seem to be rather long. However, many of the given grammatical items are, at least for the beginning, only of secondary importance. If they occur again later, there are footnotes with the necessary references. -
The Oral Tradition and Middle High German Literature
Oral Tradition, 1/2 (1986): 398-445 The Oral Tradition and Middle High German Literature Franz H. Bäuml Serious concern with the oral tradition as it existed before and side by side with Middle High German written literature is linked in Middle High German studies to the introduction of the theory of oral- formulaic composition (henceforth referred to as the Theory).1 True, the existence of an oral tradition has never seriously been doubted, but, beyond rather general notions of recurrent structural elements and hypotheses of a development of oral narrative texts in verse from song to epic,2 hypotheses which saw the oral text for the most part through the spectacles of literacy as a basically stable unit subject to alteration and adulteration, the mechanics of an oral tradition played no role in research concerned with Middle High German literature. And to this day we know practically nothing about the oral performances of the vernacular lyric of the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries.3 Research on the oral tradition of epic poetry and its relationship to the written transmission, however, received more than a negligible impetus from the Theory, despite its general rejection, particularly on the part of German germanists.4 In this survey of the impact of the Theory on Middle High German studies, I shall therefore neither pass over the sins of the representatives of the Theory in silence, nor suppress my own view that the application of the Theory, amended and stripped of its early enthusiasms, has set in motion a current of research on the interrelationships between literacy and orality which promises to illuminate more than one dark corner of literary and social history.5 The initial approaches to Middle High German texts with the concepts of the Theory were rather scattered. -

Frakes. It has been the subject of a number of studies into, for instance, gender role division and power relations, but there is still a lot that can be said about these topics. -

The Gotlandic picture stones offer glimpses into an enigmatic world, plentifully endowed with imagery, but they also arouse our curiosity. What was the purpose and significance of the picture stones in the world of their creators, and what underlying messages nestle beneath their ima- gery and broader context? As a step towards elucidating some of the points at issue and gaining an insight into current research, the Runic Research Group at the Swe- dish National Heritage Board, in cooperation with Gotland Museum, arranged an inter national interdisciplinary symposium in 2011, the first symposium ever to focus exclu sively on Gotland’s picture stones. University of Iceland School of Humanities Faculty of Languages and Culture The Rape of Brunhild Dismantling Female Transgression and Dominant Ideological Frameworks from the Middle Ages to Now MA degree in Literature, Culture & Media Melanie Janin Waha Kt.: 210684-3609 Supervisor: Þórhallur Eyþórsson May 2020 Abstract This thesis focusses on the literary character Brunhild, who is a crucial figure in the German medieval Nibelungenlied as well as in related Nordic literature. Medieval society will be examined closely in terms of its politics, laws, regulations, and general social occurrences, shedding light on her character from a historical angle. Followed by a close reading of the stanzas and sections in the Nibelungenlied, which deal with Brunhild in particular, the thesis will move onto the 19th and 20th century and the dominant European nationalistic currencies of the time. The underlying theme of this thesis are the notions myth and ideology, which remain crucial to disentangle the political and social networks that created and appropriated the medieval figure for centuries to come. This is also why the last section is concerned with the 21st century and a Brunhild that now stands in stark contrast to the previous centuries. Table of Contents 1. Abstract This dissertation explores certain attitudes towards Jews and Judaism in Old Norse literature. Regardless of an apparent lack of actual Jewish settlement in the Nordic region during the Middle Ages, medieval Icelanders and Norwegians frequently turned to the image of 'the Jew' in writing and in art, sometimes using him as an abstract theological model, or elsewhere constructing a similar kind of ethnic Other to the anti-Semitic tropes we find in medieval societies where gentiles really did live alongside Jews. -
