Stephen Jaeger, Chair Professor Marianne Kalinke Associate Professor Frederick Schwink Associate Professor Laurie Johnson Associate Professor Carol Symes ii ABSTRACT This dissertation explores the issue of foreignness in the Nibelungenlied, raising questions about the nature, and crossing, of intra-Christian borders within the text that separate customs, practices, and worldviews. It analyzes cultural alterity and its attendant outcomes in the first half of the Nibelungenlied using concepts from anthropology and cultural and sociological theory. The dissertation argues that multiple levels of foreignness, as defined by the philosopher Bernd Waldenfels, separate characters in the Nibelungenlied. Despite their varying origins, these instances of alienation all have a common result: a lack of a complete picture of the world for individual characters and the prevention of close human connections that would allow intentions and motivations to be divined. Characters’ imperfect understandings of their surroundings are fostered by their foreignness and drive many of the conflicts in the text, including Siegfried’s verbal clash with the Burgundians when he first arrives in Worms, Brünhild’s entanglement with Gunther and Siegfried, and the argument between Kriemhild and Brünhild. In addition, this dissertation argues that the constant interaction with the foreign undergone by the court at Worms leads to a change in its culture away from one which sees appearance and reality as one and the same to one that takes advantage of the power granted by a newfound ability to separate Sein from Schein. -

The object was to learn to what extent the effort to think one’s own history can free thought from what it silently thinks, and so enable it to think differently. – Michel Foucault, The Use of Pleasure In these words from the introduction to the second volume of his history of sexuality,1 Foucault suggests that a certain kind of engagement with the past might enable us to think differently. The volume that follows, a history of sexuality, would represent then an effort to engage with the past in a way that might enable us to think differently about sexuality. Writing at the end of the twelfth century, Hartmann von Aue does something similar. He uses the Arthurian past to enable him to think differently about what he calls love but which includes much of what we would call sexuality. In an attempt to make this claim plausible, I will first review some medieval views about the use of history and then explore the extent to which Hartmann, in Iwein, claims to be writing a history. Second, I will try to show how, in both Erec and Iwein, Hartmann uses the Arthurian past to think about sexuality in ways that might provoke his readers and auditors to think differently. -

TALKING ABOUT THE AESTHETIC OF THE HUMANE: EXPLORING COMMUNICATION IN THE CONTENT AND STRUCTURE OF HEINRICH BÖLL’S EARLY NOVELS A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School Of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts By David Sebastian Low January 2009 © 2009 David Sebastian Low ABSTRACT In his Frankfurter Vorlesungen Heinrich Böll attempts to formulate an aesthetic program that explains how the moral content of writing might be inscribed in its structure. This “aesthetic of the humane” would involve the subject-matter and orientation of a work’s content toward the representation of the historically real and the truth content of that reality. The “real” as it is in the historical world and that “reality” that contains the truth content of the experienced world are to be unified in the aesthetic of the humane, and it is the author who is burdened with the task of mediating the two for her reader. In many of his essays Böll privileges communication as an inherently moral act, and emphasizes the responsibility of the author to use his vocation humanely. In order to understand how Böll realized the concept of the aesthetic of the humane in his own writing we may look to how he uses communication within his texts to demonstrate moral action. Communication between characters at the level of plot corresponds to the author’s obligation to depict the “real” historical component, and communicative structures in the matrix of his novels relate to the “reality” of mediated experience provided as commentary by the author to the reader. -

Kost Department of German and Russian, Carleton College, Northfield, IL 55057, USA; [email protected] Abstract: The complex narrative composition of image and text in Max Frisch’s Der Mensch erscheint im Holozän discloses entanglements between humans and nonhuman entities that impact the narrative and that demand careful consideration. The story depicts the aging protagonist’s struggle with memory loss and his careful examination of the valley’s mountain formations in fear of a landslide. In this analysis, I show that both of these threats can be read as entangled with nonhuman agents. By focusing on the material dimension of the text, two central and related shifts occur: the background element of rain becomes foregrounded in the narrative, and the natural formations of the valley that are assumed to be static are revealed to be dynamic. These shifts lead to an interpretation of Frisch’s text focused on the impacts of rain and the temporal scale of the text’s geologic dimension. Approaching the text through the lens of material ecocriticism unveils the multiple agencies at play, decenters the human, and illustrates the embodied experience of climate change. 122 A Century of Grand Opera in Philadelphia. A CENTURY OF GRAND OPERA IN PHILADELPHIA. A Historical Summary read before the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, Monday Evening, January 12, 1920. BY JOHN CURTIS. Music is as old as the world itself; the Drama dates from before the Christian era. Combined in the form of Grand Opera as we know it today they delighted the Florentines in the sixteenth century, when Peri gave "Dafne" to the world, although the ancient Greeks listened to great choruses as incidents of their comedies and tragedies. Started by Peri, opera gradually found its way to France, Germany, and through Europe. It was the last form of entertainment to cross the At- lantic to the new world, and while some works of the great old-time composers were heard in New York, Charleston and New Orleans in the eighteenth century, Philadelphia did not experience the pleasure until 1818 was drawing to a close, and so this city rounded out its first century of Grand Opera a little more than a year ago. But it was a century full of interest and incident. In those hundred years Philadelphia heard 276 different Grand Operas. Thirty of these were first heard in America on a Philadelphia stage, and fourteen had their first presentation on any stage in this city. There were times when half a dozen travelling companies bid for our patronage each season; now we have one. One year Mr. Hinrichs gave us seven solid months of opera, with seven performances weekly; now we are permitted to attend sixteen performances a year, unless some wandering organization cares to take a chance with us. -

Some considerations on the Codex B.R. 226 (Florence, BNCF) Laura Gherardini 1 1 PhD in Germanic Philology and Linguistics, Independent Researcher, The University of Roma Tre (Italy) Abstract Among other important and rare books, The National Central Library of Florence in Italy preserves a manuscript dated to the first half of the 14th century and compiled in Bohemia. It contains three Middle High German courtly romances: Gottfried von Straßburg’s Tristan, its continuation by Heinrich von Freiberg, and Hartmann von Aue’s Iwein. This paper focuses on the history of the codex and some interesting stylistic features of Iwein's copy, which denotes a strong tendency to simplify the text. It is suggested that the Florentine Iwein is not a 'rewriting', rather, it could be seen as a 'reshaping' of the inherent sense of the chivalric poem, given its probable audience would likely not understand the old code of the Arthurian world. This paper will focus on the description and history of the manuscript and some peculiarities of the witness of Hartmann's work because it has interesting characteristics, compared to the manuscript tradition of Iwein, and to Gottfried's work preserved in the same codex and transcribed by the same copyist, as specified later. -
