Goethe, the Japanese National Identity Through Cultural Exchange, 1889 to 1989

Charles Muller on the occasion of his retirement from the University of Tokyo This is a study of the alleged “singular reception career”1 that Goethe experi- enced in Japan from 1889 to 1989, i. e., from the first translation of theMi gnon song to the last issues of the Neo Faust manga series . In its path, we will high- light six areas of discourse which concern the most prominent historical figures resp. figurations involved here: (1) the distinct academic schools of thought aligned with the topic “Goethe in Japan” since Kimura Kinji 木村謹治, (2) the tentative Japanification of Goethe by Thomas Mann and Gottfried Benn, (3) the recognition of the (un-)German classical writer in the circle of the Japanese national author Mori Ōgai 森鴎外, as well as Goethe’s rich resonances in (4) Japanese suicide ideals since the early days of Wertherism (Ueruteru-zumu ウェル テルヅム), (5) the Zen Buddhist theories of Nishida Kitarō 西田幾多郎 and D . T . Suzuki 鈴木大拙, and lastly (6) works of popular culture by Kurosawa Akira 黒澤明 and Tezuka Osamu 手塚治虫 . Critical appraisal of these source materials supports the thesis that the polite violence and interesting deceits of the discursive history of “Goethe, the Japanese” can mostly be traced back, other than to a form of speech in German-Japanese cultural diplomacy, to internal questions of Japanese national identity . -

Positing Jewish emancipation as a trans-historical and cultural process, my study traces the poetic journey of a particular set of Orientalist tropes from 19th century ghetto stories to contemporary writings and film at the turn of the millennium to address a twofold question: what could this problematic method of representation accomplish for Germany’s Jewish minority in the past, and how do we understand its re-appropriation by Germany’s “new Jewry” today. -

Jahrhundert Zum Titelbild: MILLY STEGER Mit ihrer Grenzüberschreitung in die Männerdomänen der Bildhaue- rei mit Hammer und Meißel, der Großplastik und der öffentlich finanzierten „Kunst am Bau“ hat die Bildhauerin Milly Steger wesentliche Meilensteine in der Professionalisierungsgeschichte von Künstlerinnen gesetzt. Um 1912 wurde sie zur offiziellen ‚Stadtbild- hauerin‘ von Hagen berufen, ab 1917 wirkte sie in Berlin. Im Jahr 1932 nennt Knaurs Konversationslexikon die Künstlerin exemplarisch für die Bildhauerei des 20. Jahrhunderts. Der Filmemacher Hans Cürlis widmete Milly Steger in seinem Film „Schaffende Hände – die Bildhauer“, den er 1927 drehte, eine aus- führliche Sequenz, welche die Bildhauerin beim Modellieren einer Figur zeigt. Die drei Standbilder auf dem Titel sind der gleichnami- gen Publikation zum Film entnommen. Schiller's Egmont and the Beginnings of Weimar Classicism*
Steffan Davies Schiller’s Egmont and the Beginnings of Weimar Classicism* This essay examines Schiller’s stage version of Goethe’s Egmont, which was performed in Weimar in April 1796 and which Schiller described as “gewissermaasen Göthens und mein gemeinschaftliches Werk”. Beginning with his review of Egmont in 1788 the essay demonstrates some of the principles on which Schiller amended the text, and then shows that these match changes in Goethe’s own writing by the mid-1790s. On this basis it evalu- ates the correspondence between Goethe and Schiller, and other biographical texts, to reconsider the view that Goethe’s misgivings about the adaptation marked a low-point in their relationship. It argues that Schiller’s work on Egmont instead deserves to be seen as a constructive experience in the development of the Weimar alliance. I. Schiller had spent three weeks in Weimar watching performances by Iffland and his visiting theatre company when he wrote a letter to Körner on 10 April 1796. His aim: to persuade Körner to join him for Iffland’s last performance, Goethe’s Egmont, which he had adapted for the stage. He sounds happy with his stay and with his work, describing the new Egmont as “gewissermaasen Göthens und mein gemeinschaftliches Werk” (NA 28. 210–211). Goethe, Schiller and Iffland – surely Körner would not want to miss experiencing such a combination of talents.1 * Schiller’s texts are quoted from Schillers Werke. Nationalausgabe. They frequently discussed issues concerning aesthetics, and Schiller encouraged Goethe to finish works he left as sketches. This relationship and these discussions led to a period now referred to as Weimar Classicism. They also worked together on Xenien, a collection of short satirical poems in which both Schiller and Goethe challenge opponents to their philosophical vision. <b>Life</b> Friedrich Schiller was born on 10 November 1759, in Marbach, Württemberg as the only son of military doctor Johann Kaspar Schiller (1733–96), and Elisabeth Dorothea Kodweiß (1732–1802). They also had five daughters. His father was away in the Seven Years' War when Friedrich was born. He was named after king Frederick the Great, but he was called Fritz by nearly everyone. Kaspar Schiller was rarely home during the war, but he did manage to visit the family once in a while. His wife and children also visited him occasionally wherever he happened to be stationed. When the war ended in 1763, Schiller's father became a recruiting officer and was stationed in Schwäbisch Gmünd. The family moved with him. Due to the high cost of living—especially the rent—the family moved to nearby Lorch. -
