Sindh & Balochistan Rain Situation Update # 2 by HANDS 8th August-2020

Rain continued on third day 8th August-2020 in Hyderabad, Thatta, Sujawal, Matiari, Badin, Shaheed Benazirabad, Jamshoro, Dadu, Sanghar, Umerkot, Tharparkar, Tando Allahyar, Tando Mohammad Khan, Mirpurkhas, Khairpur, Sukkur, Qambar Shahdadkot, Shikarpur, Jacobabad, Larakana, Kashmore and Ghotki.

In Balochistan Kharan, Quetta, Nushki, Mastung, Qalat, Khuzdar, Lasbella, Harnai, Kohlu, Dera Bugti, Nasirabad and Kachi.

Rain recorded in Karachi today PAF Base Masroor 30 mm, 24.7 mm, 22.5 mm, old airport 22 mm, Jinnah Terminal, University Road, Gulistan-e- Jauhar 15 mm, Kemari 8.7 mm, 6.8 mm,

District Jamshoro rain recorded today evening Kotri 9 mm, Manjhand 10 mm and Sehwan 2 mm, In District Sangahr Sinjhoro 60 mm, Shahdadpur 50 mm, Tando Adam 80 mm, Jam Nawaz Ali 13 mm, Khipro 3 mm and Taluka Sanghar 108 mm recorded.

According to initial reports from local media and communities of Nasirabad that flood stream from Sui Dera Bughti at RD 280 entered in Pat Federal Canal, gates of Pat Canal are closed from Guddu Barrage all branches of pat canal are opened according to Government Authorities that situation is under control while they have instructed to irrigation staff to be alert. In center of Much and Dhadar in Daranjen Bolan high level flood is reported transport contact of Nasirabad division and disconnected from Quetta.

In Khuzdar Tourist point Chatok more than 100 persons went for picnic from different places, all are stuck at different places due to heavy rain and flood situation from last two days, their lives are on risk as they don’t have enough food for survival. If Provincial Disaster Management Authority does not take necessary steps to rescue as their lives are on high risk. In Balochistan one Vego vehicle of visitors stuck in water they were rescued with efforts of local people. Local communities told that still people are stuck in flood water at Mach in Balochistan Due to Flood stream entered in Daranjen Nalla National High way is blocked from last four hours. Levies teams have rescued all stuck people in kolho Balochistan.

Heavy rain with mountainous water (Gaaj) destroyed many historical villages of Kacho Johi District Dadu transport contact disconnected from District Headquarter, water entered in houses about 2:30 Am and still level is increasing many people were at their agriculture lands (Tube wells) who are still stuck there. Many tourists were going to Gorakh Hill Station and they are stuck there. Situation is worst even Taluka Head Quarter Town Johi is on high risk as water has reached on 9 feet’ at FP protection band in Johi town which is 1 KM from city. People are afraid and doing self-efforts to save themselves. Water level is increasing on FP band as water is flowing from Khuzdar Balochistan which can create more destruction.

Following Major Losses are Reported:

• More than 200 villages are affected due to mountainous and rain water in District Dadu • Livestock is died and misplaced in rain water which is also a major loss • All crops are totally destroyed in the area • Many shelters are damaged and people are under the open sky with their families • Still some people are stuck on trees due to increased level of water and calling for help • During today’s rain more than 350 feeders of K-Electric tripped which broke down power supply of many areas in Karachi • In town Jahanabad two persons died due to roof collapse • Rain water entered in houses at Aziz Abad Block-2 • One 15 years old child drowned in Malir River near Memon Goth • In District Qambar Shahdadkot Village Manjhi Joyo son of Niyazal Joyo lost his life in rain water • Due to flood water Pak Iran National highway traffic is suspended • Many villages are under the water in Mach Balochistan • Livestock also went down in the flood • One person died in flood stream in Kolho Balochistan Levis forces brought his death body

Government Response: Sohail Anwar Sial Minister Irrigation, Commissioner Hyderabad division and District Administration Dadu visited the sites directed irrigation staff for strengthening FP Band Johi to protect Johi Town. Deputy Commissioner Dadu requested to Commissioner Hyderabad to provide Helicopter to rescue stuck people as other transport is not accessible. Army Response: According to Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) that Pakistan Army has started rescue operation in District Dadu they have deployed engineers with motor boats to rescue the people who are still stuck in rain water, medical teams are also arrived on the spot. HANDS Preparedness / Response: HANDS is going to start Rapid Need Assessment of the Area in District Dadu to measure the losses and affected population for further response planning with coordination of Provincial Disaster Management Authority PDMA Sindh & District Administration. Immediate Needs: Food Items, Emergency Tents, Non Food Items (NFIs), Mosquito Nets, Safe Drinking Water, Medical Care and Vaccinations for livestock.
