  • Water Supply & Sanitation
WATER SUPPLY & SANITATION 149 WATER SUPPLY & SANITATION VISION To improve quality of life of the people of Punjab through provision of safe drinking water and sanitation coverage to the entire community. POLICY This important social sector assumes the policy of provision of safe and potable drinking water, sanitation and coverage of the entire community particularly in barani and brackish areas. Emphasis has been laid on encouraging Participatory Management - Community mobilization in project. Coverage will be provided to the rural areas through encouragement of integrated rural water supply and sanitation schemes. Waste water treatment plants will be provided for improving environmental pollution and protecting Water Bodies. STRATEGIC INITIATIVES / NEW INTERVENTIONS ¾ 993 water supply and sanitation schemes have been conceived for the year 2008-09 with a total financial outlay of Rs.8000 million. Execution of these interventions will result into substantial improvement in the population coverage. ¾ A special package has been reflected in the MTDF 2008-09 under “Community based Sanitation Program”. By implementation of this project there will be visible improvement in the sanitation, particularly in Rural Areas and Small Towns. ¾ MTDF 2008-09 provides “Block Allocation” for various components of the Sector. The schemes against these blocks will be identified through participation of the local communities. ¾ In order to ensure equitable distribution of supplies and for water conservation, water metering concept is being introduced in the rural areas. This intervention will control wastage of water and will lead to the sustainability of the schemes. ¾ Presently there is a huge disparity amongst districts regarding the resource provisions. This imbalance is being minimized by providing more funds to the deprived/low profile districts as defined in MICS.

  • Fakhar-E-Bhkkar - a High Yielding, Temperature Stress Tolerant and Rust Resistant Spring Bread Wheat Variety
Int. J. Adv. Res. Biol. Sci. (2018). 5(8): 36-45 International Journal of Advanced Research in Biological Sciences ISSN: 2348-8069 www.ijarbs.com DOI: 10.22192/ijarbs Coden: IJARQG(USA) Volume 5, Issue 8 - 2018 Research Article DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.22192/ijarbs.2018.05.08.006 Fakhar-E-Bhkkar - A high yielding, temperature stress tolerant and rust resistant spring bread wheat variety Muhammad Irshad*, Zubeda Parveen, Abdul Ghaffar, Niaz Hussain, Muneer Abbas Muhammad Aslam and Khalid Hussain. Arid Zone Research Institute, Bhakkar, Punjab, Pakistan. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract A new wheat variety (Fakhar-E-Bhakkar), high yielding, temperature stress tolerant and disease resistant was developed by hybridization between strain 93T347 and commercial cultivar Auqab-2000 at Arid Zone Research Institute, Bhakkar, Pakistan. F2 to F6 generations of this cross were advanced by modified bulk pedigree method from 2004 to 2010. Flag leaf attitude is semi erect and auricle color is white. This variety has tapering head shape with 13-14 cm length having 21-22spikelet per spike. It has high tillering capacity (145tillers per meter row).Fakhar-E-Bhakkar has good yield potential in poor sandy soil, early & terminal heat stress environments and characterized with morphological marker of anthocyanin pigmentation at peduncle and awns during grain filling stage. One thousand kernel weight ranges from 40.00 to 45.00 g. Seed is ovate, medium and amber in color having protein content 15.00%. It has good chapatti making quality. New wheat variety Fakhar-E-Bhakkar is resistant to prevailing races of leaf and yellow rusts along with desirable tolerance against local race of stem rust.

  • Consanguinity and Its Sociodemographic Differentials in Bhimber District, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan
J HEALTH POPUL NUTR 2014 Jun;32(2):301-313 ©INTERNATIONAL CENTRE FOR DIARRHOEAL ISSN 1606-0997 | $ 5.00+0.20 DISEASE RESEARCH, BANGLADESH Consanguinity and Its Sociodemographic Differentials in Bhimber District, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan Nazish Jabeen, Sajid Malik Human Genetics Program, Department of Animal Sciences, Quaid-i-Azam University, 45320 Islamabad, Pakistan ABSTRACT Kashmiri population in the northeast of Pakistan has strong historical, cultural and linguistic affini- ties with the neighbouring populations of upper Punjab and Potohar region of Pakistan. However, the study of consanguineous unions, which are customarily practised in many populations of Pakistan, revealed marked differences between the Kashmiris and other populations of northern Pakistan with respect to the distribution of marriage types and inbreeding coefficient (F). The current descriptive epidemiological study carried out in Bhimber district of Mirpur division, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan, demonstrated that consanguineous marriages were 62% of the total marriages (F=0.0348). First-cousin unions were the predominant type of marriages and constituted 50.13% of total marital unions. The estimates of inbreeding coefficient were higher in the literate subjects, and consanguinity was witnessed to be rising with increasing literacy level. Additionally, consanguinity was observed to be associated with ethnicity, family structure, language, and marriage arrangements. Based upon these data, a distinct sociobiological structure, with increased stratification and higher genomic homozygos- ity, is expected for this Kashmiri population. In this communication, we present detailed distribution of the types of marital unions and the incidences of consanguinity and inbreeding coefficient (F) across various sociodemographic strata of Bhimber/Mirpuri population. The results of this study would have implication not only for other endogamous populations of Pakistan but also for the sizeable Kashmiri community immigrated to Europe.

Geospatial Analysis of Indus River Meandering and Flow Pattern from Chachran to Guddu Barrage, Pakistan Vol 9 (2), December 2018 Open Access ORIGINAL ARTICLE Full Length Ar t icle Geospatial Analysis of Indus River Meandering and Flow Pattern from Chachran to Guddu Barrage, Pakistan Danish Raza* and Aqeel Ahmed Kidwai Department of Meteorology-COMSATS University Islamabad, Islamabad, Pakistan ABS TRACT Natural and anthropogenic influence affects directly ecologic equilibrium and hydro morphologic symmetry of riverine surroundings. The current research intends to study the hydro morphologic features (meanders, shape, and size) of Indus River, Pakistan by using remote sensing (RS) and geographical information science (GIS) techniques to calculate the temporal changes. Landsat satellite imagery was used for qualitative and analytical study. Satellite imagery was acquired from Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM), Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) and Operational Land Imager (OLI). Temporal satellite imagery of study area was used to identify the variations of river morphology for the years 1988,1995,2002,2009 and 2017. Research was based upon the spatial and temporal change of river pattern with respect to meandering and flow pattern observations for 30 years’ temporal data with almost 7 years’ interval. Image preprocessing was applied on the imagery of the study area for the better visualization and identification of variations among the objects. Object-based image analysis technique was performed for better results of a feature on the earth surface. Model builder (Arc GIS) was used for calculation of temporal variation of the river. In observation many natural factor involves for pattern changes such as; floods and rain fall.
