It has been deemed “ferocious,” “a death-defying linguistic tightrope act,” and a combination of “dark and spiky emotions” in reviews appearing in popular newspapers. Taking the considerable critical investment in the affective dimension of Ferrante’s work as a point of departure, my dissertation examines the representation of emotions in My Brilliant Friend and in two Italian novels written between the 1960s and the 1970s – La Storia (1974, History: A Novel) by Elsa Morante (1912-1985) and L’arte della gioia (The Art of Joy, 1998/2008) by Goliarda Sapienza (1924-1996). -

Proprio sulla “Voce” cominciano a trovare spazio gli stranieri e, in primo luogo, quei poeti francesi che, dopo la lezione del simbolismo, si fecero chiamare intimisti, ispirando l’umiltà fanciullesca e la vena antidannunziana di Corazzini, Gozzano e i crepuscolari. Essi furono i primi artisti italiani del Novecento a stabilire un contatto e uno scambio proficuo con la cultura letteraria europea, dato che le provocazioni futuriste approdate a Londra con gran successo si erano poi risolte in un nulla compositivo. Di certo l’esperienza europea dei crepuscolari e quella successiva, di Sbarbaro e Rebora, che vogliono fondare la poesia novecentesca su basi nuove, antiretoriche ed esistenziali, e soprattutto sul verso libero, può apparire poca cosa se confrontata con le presenze straniere che animano il nostro panorama nazionale nel primo dopoguerra. -

Francesco Schiavon 27.4.2013 3 To Melania and Concetta, equally beautiful creatures 4 Abstract My main purpose is to investigate the characteristics of the merging of the literary mode of the fantastic and journalism that constitutes the most original element within Buzzati’s non-fictional production. I intend to analyze the modes of representation that his journalism borrowed from fiction in order to demonstrate that Buzzati’s journalism forces us to challenge our idea of objectivity and that the fictional element of representation which characterizes his articles provides a further option to investigate the ambivalence of the real. In order to understand Buzzati’s contribution to the creation of this new hybrid prose that I will define ‘fantastic news’ I intend to focus on the cultural role of Buzzati’s journalistic production, his relationship with his historical, cultural and social time, and the readership effected by Buzzati’s distinctive narrative between the 1940s and 1970s. I will ground my discussion on journalistic and literary theory, by taking in particular consideration those works which deal with the fantastic and the relationship between journalism and fiction. -
Assai Complesso Il Rapporto Tra Scrittori E Radio
INTRODUZIONE Assai complesso il rapporto tra scrittori e radio: è stato determinato di vol- ta in volta da una molteplicità di fattori, che riguardano la politica, la cultura, le trasformazioni sociali e mediali. Nel corso di quasi un secolo di vita la radio ha vissuto cambiamenti enormi, mutando forme e modi di comunicare, inven- tando e rinnovando il proprio pubblico. Il rapporto con gli scrittori e con la let- teratura può fungere da termometro utile per comprendere gli obiettivi e le fi- nalità culturali della radio pubblica. Allo stesso tempo la radio è anche lo spec- chio su cui si riflettono le resistenze e le idee culturali di una società letteraria. L’arco temporale preso in esame inizia negli anni Trenta e arriva agli anni Sessanta, con alcuni sforamenti nei decenni successivi, e un capitolo conclusivo su Marconi, se ben mi ricordo di Antonio Tabucchi, composto a metà anni Novanta. L’attenzione si rivolge a opere pensate appositamente per la radio, riconducibili al genere del radiodramma e della rivista radiofonica. Sono stati scelti i radiodram- mi d’autore di Alberto Savinio, Carlo Emilio Gadda, Vasco Pratolini e Giuseppe Dessí. Il lavoro prende avvio affrontando, nel primo capitolo, il contributo di due grandi intellettuali ebrei, che videro nella radio lo strumento più adeguato per portare avanti una battaglia educativa e pedagogica. Walter Benjamin dal- la stazione di Francoforte, fino all’ascesa del nazismo, elabora delle vere e pro- prie conferenze radiofoniche per ragazzi, oltre ad alcuni radiodrammi di grande valore. È convinto che l’opera di divulgazione culturale sia fondamentale e che la radio, nell’epoca della riproducibilità tecnica, possa giocare un ruolo necessa- rio, volto ad avvicinare le masse. -
Postmodern Literature in Depth
Postmodern literature Postmodern literature is literature characterized by reliance on narrative techniques such as fragmentation, paradox, and the unreliable narrator; and often is (though not exclusively) defined as a style or a trend which emerged in the post–World War II era. Postmodern works are seen as a response against dogmatic following of Enlightenment thinking and Modernist approaches to literature.[1] Postmodern literature, like postmodernism as a whole, tends to resist definition or classification as a "movement". Indeed, the convergence of postmodern literature with various modes of critical theory, particularly reader-response and deconstructionist approaches, and the subversions of the implicit contract between author, text and reader by which its works are often characterised, have led to pre- modern fictions such as Cervantes' Don Quixote (1605, 1615) and Laurence Sterne's eighteenth-century satire Tristram Shandy being retrospectively considered by some as early examples of postmodern literature.[2][3] While there is little consensus on the precise characteristics, scope, and importance of postmodern literature, as is often the case with artistic movements, postmodern literature is commonly defined in relation to a precursor. In particular, postmodern writers are seen as reacting against the precepts of modernism, and they often operate as literary "bricoleurs", parodying forms and styles associated with modernist (and other) writers and artists. Limited Developments, Limits of the “Real”: The Italian Novel of Formation and Uses of Literary Realism during Fascism, 1929–1938 by Kathleen Emma Gaudet A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Italian Studies University of Toronto © Copyright by Kathleen Emma Gaudet 2016 Limited Developments, Limits of the “Real”: The Italian Novel of Formation and Uses of Literary Realism during Fascism, 1929–1938 Kathleen Emma Gaudet Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Italian Studies University of Toronto 2016 Abstract This thesis examines a cluster of six Italian realist novels of formation, all initially released between 1929 and 1938 and written by young intellectuals who came of age during the fascist period—Alberto Moravia’s Gli indifferenti, Umberto Barbaro’s Luce fredda, Carlo Bernari’s Tre operai, Elio Vittorini’s Il garofano rosso, Fausta Cialente’s Natalia, and Alba de Céspedes’ Nessuno torna indietro. In each case, the author’s ideological intentions influenced not only his or her decision to employ realism and the general form of the romanzo di formazione but also the shape of the protagonist’s path toward maturation and the characteristics of the realism with which this process is narrated. Despite significant variances between them, the primary works included in the corpus show major commonalities that make it possible to begin to define a typology of the Italian realist novel of formation of the period roughly spanning the 1930s. Aesthetically, they involve prose that is mostly realist but incorporates non-realist traits, the result of the authors’ experimentation with techniques derived from the contemporary avant- garde. -

The goal of my analysis is to show how a traumatic reality can fracture the ideological discourse dominant in a specific historical moment, leaving a mark on the structural and formal (rhetorical) construction of the work of art. My analysis begins with Naples immediately after World War II, by focusing on the works of Curzio Malaparte and Anna Maria Ortese. I then move to Paris in the aftermath of the Algerian War, to analyze the early films of Éric Rohmer, Chris Marker, Guy Debord, and Agnès Varda.
