Steers to £1230 Heifers to £1100
Excellent numbers forward considering it’s mid November, with all but those poorer types seeing the strong trade of late. Top priced steers came in the way of a pen of smart Limousin’s (averaging 21m) from Chris & David Pratt of Kentisbeare which rose to £1230 apiece whilst younger sorts (18m) of the same breed sold well and to £1140 for Rob Bickle of Bridestowe. Blue and Angus bullocks (21m) both ran to £1190 for AK Banbury, Crediton and Peter Hendy of Staddiscombe, Plymouth also Simmental steers (30m) saw £1165 for John & Jill Redman of Chagford. Later born Charolais steers (19m) reached £1090 for a pair from William Bromell, Chagford and £1080 for a bunch of six from Robert Perry up from Dartmouth. Holstein Friesian bred steers fetched £850, both for a pen of five (24m) from Chris & David Pratt and a trio (28m) from John & Jeffery Harris of Zeal Monachorum. A tremendous run of yearling Blue steers from Paul Brimacombe & Family of Yeoford reached £900 for a group of three. Store heifers hit a high of £1100 given for a well fleshed Blue (28m) from John Quick of Coldridge with Charolais females (19m) attaining £1040 for Tom Elliott of Ashburton. Several well turned out Limousin heifers on show with a single (19m) from Rob Bickle selling for £1020 and a bunch of three (24m) close behind at £1010 a head for BJ & CE Ellis of Musbury. Devon heifers (24m) got £945, again for John Quick while a couple of very decent Herefords (24m) also made £945 for John & Jeffery Harris with Angus heifers (26m) to £905 for MA Cake of Rockbeare.

A smaller entry of 116 stirks and suckled calves met a tidy trade throughout with well grown Charolais steers from the Mortimore family of Chagford topping at £790, Andrew Barker & Family, Dunsford showed well presented Blue steers (13m) attaining £760, further Blues, a little younger, from Stuart Dagworthy of Woodbury attaining £760 (9m). Limousin cross steers from Terry & Jean Tall of Modbury (15m) realised £730, younger Charolais steers from the Mortimore family (7m) hit £660 whilst Angus steers from TG Coles of Ugborough (10m) attained £630. A smaller show of heifers saw the best hit £590 (12m) for Limousin heifers from Andrew Barker and family. Similar goods from Terry & Jean Tall realised £580, Bernie Serpell of Plympton attained £575 for Charolais heifers (7m), further Limousin crosses from Andrew Barker & Family realised £570, whilst Hereford heifers from Phil & Christine Caunter of Harbertonford realised £545.

Another very large entry of calves sold to a CALVES - 10.15 am selective trade especially for small and plain calves as we are now in that time of year when those CALVES Bulls Heifers calves are difficult to rear. Top of the day was Breed TOP AVE TOP AVE £405 for a British Blue bull from Paul Brimacombe British Blue & Family of Yeoford who sold others to £398, 24 405 241 12 220 161 £358 & £350. Limousin calves sold to £335, £318 Limousin 11 335 262 12 302 177 (x2) & £310 (x2) for Billingsmoor Farm Ltd of Charolais 3 305 281 4 242 204 Butterleigh. Charolais bulls to £305 for Martin & Simmental 6 302 260 1 268 268 Liz Bennett of Broadhembury who sold others to £280, Limousins to £280 and Simmental bulls to Hereford 8 265 146 8 160 92 £270. Other Simmental bulls to £302 for Malcolm South Devon 1 225 225 & Kay Pring of Broadclyst and £295 for Messrs C Aberdeen Angus 16 228 127 21 150 78 & EC Mills of Sampford Peverell. Aberdeen Angus bulls were harder Norwegian Red 2 45 45 work today and the best sold to £228 for Paul Fleckvieh 3 180 80 Brimacombe & Family. Heifers topped at £302 for a Limousin cross heifer from Paul Hendy of Kingsbridge with others to £248 for Billingsmoor Farm LTD. Simmental heifers to £268 for Malcolm & Kay Pring and Charolais heifers to £242 & £235 for Messrs RH & MJ Hurford of Axminster and £232 for Martin & Liz Bennett. Fleckvieh bulls to £180 for Rob & Jack Chapple of Axminster. Friesians to £100 for Messrs TW & WT James of Penzance.

Another cracking entry of Dairy saw a more selective trade than of late for the second quality and crossbreds. The best however continue to sell well and top of the day in the commercial milk section was £1800 for a second calver “Dartview Ioata Dolly 63” by Regancrest Altaiota from Messrs JJ Palfrey & Son of Dartmouth who sold heifers to £1780. Derek Pyle of Clyst Honiton sold a smart heifer by Woodmarsh Gerald at £1700. Other heifers to £1550 for Messrs R & J Legg & Son of Bridport who also sold the heifer calf off this heifer at £380. Crossbreds topped at £1180 for a Jersey cross from Roger Easterbrook of Okehampton.
The Golden Opportunity Sale of Pedigree Jerseys & Guernseys met a packed ring and an electric trade! I would like to thank the vendors that continue to support our sales here at Exeter with exceptionally quality Jerseys and they were rewarded with a trade than can only be described as “on fire”! Top of the day was 2050gns for the much admired heifer from Bruce, Jenny & Jess Ravenhill-White of Umberleigh with “Whitenhill Aussiegolds Sunset” by Broadlin Aussiegold out of three generations of VG or EX Dams, she sold having calved in August to Oliver Bolitho of Truro. Her heifer calf a homebred sire Whitenhill Vanahlems Pecan sold exceptionally well at 520gns for their Justafew herd in Cornwall. The Ravenhill-White’s had an exceptional team and sold others to 1950gns for “Whitenhill Vanahlems Winze” by Panoo Abe Vanahlem, She sold to Alex & Claire Wilson-North for their Foxhole herd in North Devon who also secured a smart second calver by Bluegrass Lord Actionman at 1920gns. Other heifers from Whitenhill sold to 1750gns twice and 1720gns for the first cow in the ring, a third calver by Greenmile Maun Impish which sold to Peter Bullock of Crediton who has established a new herd. Her heifer calf by Potterswall Minister sold at 480gns to Adam Smith. The Whitenhill consignment of eleven in-milk cows & heifers averaged an incredible £1805! A cracking consignment from Daffyd & Helen Cox’s Glanmor herd in Carmarthenshire met strong demand and proved that the long journey to Exeter was well worth it with their best heifer selling to 1900gns for “Glanmor Fisher Aries” by a homebred sire Glanmor Tyler Mr Fisher, she sold to Pete Bullock. Others sold to 1800gns twice for heifers by Vanahlem & Gemini which both sold to Maurice Grose & Family of Cornwall and a second calver “Glanmor Legacy Starburst” by Hollylane Lilibets Legacy sold well at 1700gns to Tristan Hocking of Penzance. The Glanmor consignment of five averaged £1858! Ian & Graham White of Minehead sold a consignment following their dispersal last year which saw a fifth calver “Liddimore On Time Liberty VG87” by Lencrest On Time sell exceptionally well at 1600gns. Heifers from the same home by Heartland Merchant Topeka sold at 1500gns. Jim Elworthy of Cullompton sold two super milky heifers by Lagangreen Roy Boy at 1820gns & 1780gns to David Plowman of Wiltshire. In-calf heifers topped at 2000gns for “Whitenhill Miles Delicious” by Three Valley Country Miles out of an EX91 Dam from Bruce, Jenny & Jess Ravenhill and she sold to Martin Williams of Helston for his Trenithon herd. Others from Whitenhill sold to 1300gns twice. Three Guernsey in-calf heifers from John Marks of Ivybridge sold to 1000gns for “Sandy Hole Penwiths Lad Zinnia” with another at 950gns. What an exceptional day for the Jersey Breed!
The dispersal of the British Friesian & Crossbred herd on behalf of Messrs TW & WT James of Penzance sold to a very decent trade and topped at 1200gns for a fresh Shorthorn x second calver with a Swedish Red x fourth calver having calved in June also realising the same money. Others sold to 1150gns for a third calver and the dry cows topped at 1000gns for a British Friesian second calver. Seven heifer calves sold to an exceptional trade topping at 400gns with others to 380gns & 350gns (x2).

319 IN-LAMB & EMPTY EWES The first of the collective In-Lamb ewe sales saw a small entry in strong demand with Mark & Henry Johnson of Bridport selling a super run of Dorset Mule shearlings scanned with almost 200% for January lambing at £142 (x2), £141 (x2), £140 (x3) & £130. Ray Tucker of Exeter sold his pure Dorset ewes scanned imminent at £136, £128 & £126 as well as Suffolk x older ewes running with the ram at £100. Rachel Lang of Plympton sold scanned pure Suffolk ewes at £132 & £125 and Ross Baker of Highampton parted with two pens of Suffolk cross shearlings that had been running with the ram for £120. A sizable number of empty ewes for the time of year saw Andrew Pedrick of Buckfast eligh sell Beltex type shearlings at £108, Robert Partridge of Teignmouth had Zwartbles shearlings at £102 as older or indifferent sorts were well above cull values and looked well sold for the time of year.

Ewe Lambs sold to £96 (x2) & £92 (x2) for strong and powerfull Suffolk x Scotch Halfbreds from Phillip Haydon of Hittisleigh and to £90 (x3) & £89 for similar Suffolk cross Mules from Milbornewick Farms of Sherborne. Brian Lavis of Bridestowe sold two pens of stylish Suffolk crosses at £86, Bonner Farms of Burrington had two pens of Dorset’s at £82, Mrs JA Parry of Tiverton saw her Dorset’s claim £81 and James Heard of Okehampton parted with pure Suffolk ewe lambs at £80.
1369 STORE LAMBS
Store lambs were a similarly strong trade with Dave Fox of Cheriton Fitzpaine reaching £76.50, followed by Lovaton Farm Partnership of South Tawton at £76 & £70.50, Phil Squire of Holbeton at £74.50, £74 & £72.50 and Jon Andrews of Wembury claimed £73. Kevin Dinnis of Tedburn St Mary reached £72.50 of his whilst smarts sorts from both Davie Farm Partnership of Shobrooke and Steve Webber of Umberleigh hit £72, with Steve selling two further pens at £70, a price matched by Dan Vallance of Okehampton. Medium lambs were generally all over £60 whilst smaller or indifferent lambs were generally top side of £50. Not too many hill bred lambs forward, but those that were traded from £2 to £52 and the overall average settled at £61 back less than a pound on last week.
15 COUPLES (6 EWES & 9 LAMBS) Just three lots of couples saw Chris Popham of Trull sell a FM Dorset double at £178 and Ken & Brenda Cole of Loxbeare sold BM Dorset doubles at £166 as well as singles with the same remarks at £132.
39 BREEDING RAMS As the season now draws to a close bidders were being selective and soon became hard to find! That said Harold Keast of Crediton sold two Charollais ram lambs at £300, Rachel Lang sold a Suffolk Shearling at £220, Bonner Farms parted with two lambs at £200 and Mike Miller of Milton Abbas claimed £180 for his Charollais. All others sold were from £100 to £170.
15 PEDIGREE SUFFOLK FEMALES A short offering of Suffolk Females at this annual event met with a strong trade for all forward. SK Elsworthy of Chulmleigh topped the sale of In-Lamb ewes at 460gns and followed it up with another at 380gns. Ben Collings of St Clether saw his best ewes sell to 440gns, 360gns & 320gns and Mike Waycott of Ashburton saw his ewes reach 320gns, 300gns and 280gns as well as selling a lamb at 250gns.
19 CHAOLLAIS FEMALES Following many sizable sales of Charollais Females in the South West over the last 3-4 months, trade today was steady for the few sheep forward. John Barker & family of Wellington sold their best Ewe lambs at 330gns, 290gns & 250gns, Andrew Pedrick of Buckfastleigh sold the best of his In-Lambers at 280gns and Colin Smallacombe of Bow parted with the best of his In-Lamb ewes for 200gns (x2), 190gns & 160gns (x2).

Rural Reflection November 2017
Autumn is now in full swing and so far has proven to be a real wash out, with the wet weather hampering any attempt to proceed with autumn cultivations during October. Thankfully, as we enter November, the weather seems to be settling down, which will hopefully allow for winter crops to be sown and established with as few problems as possible.
The recent announcement that an extra £40 million is being made available for farm productivity grants in the next stage of the Countryside Productivity Scheme is certainly pleasing. The money available is aimed to allow farmers to invest in a range of technology including robotic equipment and systems to aid livestock and crop production and to improve the use of renewable energy produced on farm by improving energy storage and distribution. Examples of eligible projects include robotic milking, slurry handling, harvesting and weeding equipment, and electrical battery storage systems to allow for better use of renewable energy that is produced on farm. The grants cover 40% of eligible costs with the minimum grant available being £35,000, meaning the minimum total investment needs to be worth £87,500 to be eligible for funding. Thus, if you are considering investing in farm technology that meets the above criteria it would certainly be worth looking into these farm productivity grants. If you would like any further information on these grants or any help in applying please contact your local Kivell Rural Professional office, we would be more than happy to help. The deadline for applications is December 2018 but each application will be considered as they are submitted.
For those of you who may be interested in smaller scale farm grants, the LEADER grants may be better suited to you. Project eligibility and funding levels vary between local action groups but examples of projects eligible for funding include equipment to improve animal welfare, such as enhanced livestock handling equipment and calving detectors; equipment to increase the efficiency of energy, water and fertiliser usages such as LED livestock housing and pig/poultry water filtration systems. Unfortunately, the grant does not cover equipment that has already been bought, but if you are thinking of investing in some new equipment it may be worthwhile looking into the LEADER grants to see if your project would be eligible for funding. For the sheep farmers amongst you, you should be receiving your annual sheep inventory forms from DEFRA in the post or via email by the end of November. It is important to complete and return your inventory to DEFRA by 31st December 2017 as failing to do so will increase your chance of a Basic Payment Scheme inspection. After you have completed your inventory, you must remember to include your annual inventory total (as at 1st December 2017) in your holding
register in order to comply with Statutory Management Requirement 8: Sheep and Goat Identification of Cross Compliance.
For those of you whose land is situated within Nitrate Vulnerable Zones (NVZs) remember that grassland derogations for 2018 are now open and close on 29th December 2017. If you are successful in applying for a grassland derogation, the limit of spreading 170kg per hectare of nitrogen in livestock manure increases to 250kg for grazing livestock manure. If you wish to apply for a grassland derogation for 2018 you need to be in touch with the Environment Agency before the application window closes, and remember that if you applied for derogation in 2017 you will need to re-apply for 2018 if you would like another derogation.
With December now just around the corner, so too is the Basic Payment Scheme payment window, which duly opens on 1st December 2017. The exchange rate for this year’s payments has been set at €1 = £0.89470, which means an increase of about 5% on last year’s payment and so this year payments should average approximately £90 per acre. Here’s hoping the Rural Payments Agency makes payments promptly this year.
