The village, which has a strong sense of community, offers a village shop, pub, a church and a highly regarded primary school. Blackawton is equidistant to the three major towns of the South Hams, namely Totnes, Kingsbridge and Dartmouth. All three towns offer an abundance of eclectic shops, boutiques, galleries, pubs and restaurants, as well as leisure centres, supermarkets and secondary education. Dartmouth, which sits on the banks of the spectacular Dart Estuary is home to the Britannia Royal Naval College. Some of the most popular beaches in South Devon are nearby and the rural and idyllic wilderness of Dartmoor National Park is less than 10 miles distant. Communications are excellent with a fast train service to London available at Totnes, providing access to London in under 3 hours and the A38 Devon Expressway, leading to Exeter, Plymouth and the motorway network is about 9 miles. DESCRIPTION Ebenezer is a beautiful stone chapel that was originally built in 1823 and converted to a private dwelling house in the early 2000s. The conversion included major remedial works to the roof, windows, electrics and plumbing and of course the interior design.

  • May 2021.Cdr
Parish Magazine Ashprington Cornworthy Dittisham May 2021 Away with the Fairies in 1917. My three year old granddaughter Lily loves fairy stories and so, apparently, did Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of Sherlock Holmes. He totally believed in the Cottingley Fairies. In 1917 two talented cousins, Elsie Wright (16) and Frances Griffiths (9), borrowed their father's camera and went down through the bottom of the garden to Cottingley Beck, a stream near Bradford in Yorkshire. There Elsie took five photographs, beautifully composed, showing her cousin Frances watching with a rapt expression a group of fairy folk dancing in front of her. Other photographs showed fairies flying around and a gnome on the grass. The whole process took about half an hour. Such was the skill of the girls' composition that Elsie's mother believed that the little figures really were fairies. Her father, who developed the images, did not believe they were real and considered that the girls had used cardboard cut outs of fairies in the photographs. He refused to lend them his camera again. Elsie's mother Polly was a Theosophist. She went to a meeting in Bradford which happened to be about fairies. She told the president of the Harrogate Theosophists, Edward Gardner, about the photographs and he examined them. Having pronounced them genuine he later contacted Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, a well known Spiritualist, who was writing a piece on fairies for the 1920 Christmas edition of the Strand Magazine. Doyle was totally convinced that the images were real and asked permission to use them in his article.

  • Blackawton Beacon June 2019 Published Jointly by the Parochial Church Council and the Parish Council
Blackawton Beacon June 2019 published jointly by the Parochial Church Council and the Parish Council Sustainable Blackawton from Robin Mewes, James Perry, Sue Hadow, Jan Scott and others A few years ago Blackawton had an informal environmental group which aimed to raise awareness about sustainable issues and promote actions and projects that could support the long term sustainability of the Blackawton community. Recently a few of us met and suggested that it might be a suitable time to relaunch such a group as a community-led development. The idea has been brought to the Parish Council as well as to Blackawton School and it is hoped that many will support the initiative. Some of the proposals could be the establishment of a community woodland area, a community car sharing scheme and regular suggestions on how to reduce the carbon footprint. An informal meeting for anyone who is interested is arranged for: Wednesday 5th June at 7.00 pm in the Village Hall Please come along with any ideas you have and share the vision of growing Blackawton as a Sustainable Community Teddy Bears' Parachute Jump from Kate Janman Sunday 9th June at 2.30 pm Bring your friends, and all their teddies with their parachutes to church and watch them jump! And stay for a cup of tea afterwards. There will be prizes for the best-looking parachute and for the slowest (least fast?) descent. Don't miss this important event in Blackawton's social calendar! For more information ring Kate on 712362 Cocktails on the Terrace from Katy Peters Saturday 15th June at 7.30 pm South View Cottage, next to the village shop Please bring your friends to our drinks evening.

  • Chairman's Message
2011 No. 1 February Reg. Charity No.228966 CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE It is with regret that I have to announce that two of our long standing volunteers have resigned. Peter Reay and Ian Farrell between them have served the Society for over twenty-five years. Peter has been editing the Devon Bird Report from 1999 and wrote a section prior to that year. His keenness to ensure accuracy with each report is a testament to him. I worked closely with Peter for six years whilst County Recorder and I know the loss of his service to the Society will be greatly missed. Ian, will be known to members in recent years as our webmaster a job which he performs with enthusiasm and dedication. I first met Ian when acting as legal advisor to the Society on the wording of its new constitution when I first noticed his commitment, business acumen and a keenness to get the job done, a style he showed throughout his service as a trustee on Council, as Chairman of the Publishing Group and right up to present as Vice Chairman. On behalf of the Society I would like to thank both Peter and Ian for their service to the Society and wish them the very best for the future. Whilst Chairman I have set myself various tasks, last year it was the completion of the Birds of Devon book and ensuring the preparation of the Devon Tetrad Atlas was on a sound footing, both thankfully were achieved. This year my task is probably more difficult in that I will attempt to find volunteers to fill vacancies on Council and other posts that are vacant.

  • Mortimers in the 16Th Century Devon Tax Rolls in 1524, Henry VIII Raised
Mortimers in the 16th century Devon Tax Rolls In 1524, Henry VIII raised a tax in attempt to fund the war with France. This was repeated again in 1543. These records are among the earliest accessible records of Mortimers in Devon and give us a glimpse of the prosperity and distribution of members of the Mortimer family during the first half of the 16th century. Overall, there were 25 men and women listed in 1524, having already spread to 16 parishes. 19 years later, they had absented from several of the aforementioned parishes but expanded to 19 parishes. The name has been standardised to Mortimer for internet search purposes. Little meaning was attached to the spellings of names in the 1500s and spelling varied widely.
